Rant

Easily one of Chuck's most ambitious novels to date. An extremely unique take on time travel (and rabies) that was written in an pseudo autobiographical format.

A Requiem of Rant Quotes

The release is one day away, I'm sure people have finished the ARCs, and it's inevitable that this thread will appear. I say requiem because that's how I see quotes: like lost souls of a greater whole, a homage to the departed, or a farewell to a bo read more »

Post 'Rant" Reviews, Articles & Interviews Here

Hey guys,

Something I want to try and do this time around with the release of 'Rant', Chuck's next novel, is recruit your help in gathering all the media that surfaces along with this book. Now, I've done this in the past too, but we've never had read more »

Rant script

I've already posted this under Fan Submissions and didn't realize there's a whole forum dedicated to this incredible novel.

This is a script that I'm toying with, I don't have an agent nor any credibility to have it read by the higher-ups. I figure you, the fans, deserve to read it first.

I would like constructive feedback from fans who would love nothing more than to see this novel as a film.

As of now, it's only the first two chapters. I'm working on the rest as you read this, trying to figure out all the plot points dealing with Time Travel and, to help appeal to the larger audiences, the romance between Echo and Rant .. And Echo and Chet.

Enjoy.

Similarities

I've been giving a bit of thought to the similarities between stoking and boosted peak technology. Boosted peak technology, as I understand it, seems to be a passive way to experience an enhanced life/activity whilst stoking is an active way to live an enhanced/boosted version of your own life. Both experiences involve issues of control. Stoking affords greater control over your own life whereas boosted peak technology allows someone else to control your experiences. It seems to me that stoking is a bit like witnessing an enhanced 'neural transcript' of your own life.

Does anyone else think there are meant to be obvious similarities between Boosted Peak Technology and Stoking or is it simply a co-incidence (or maybe you don't see any similarities at all?)

Shot's obsession with birth control

Why is Shot Dunyun so obsessed with preventing Echo from becoming pregnant? Is this evidence of the fact that Shot knows way more than he is letting on?

Man/Dog/wolf/werewolf?

There seems to be a theme of mixing attributes of man and dog in Rant. In fact there are so many examples that I’m beginning to wonder if they are being used in a way other than as a device to create a menacing atmosphere. I think there is enough evidence to put forward a suggestion that Rant may not be solely human i.e. that he is in fact some sort of human/canine crossbreed.

Here is a small selection of evidence:

“Rant Casey had a dog’s sense of smell. A human bloodhound, he could track anything.” he has a very keen sense of taste and smell. Amongst his talents, he can sniff out when a female is most fertile (P182).

P35 “He used to wake up with a yelp.”

P41 “My take is you’re not born loving nobody. Love is a skill you learn. Like house-training a dog.”

P313 Bodie Carlyle “gossip says a secret dog pack of folks runs the world.” read more »

A tribute to Chuck Palahniuk’s Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey

I have been spending my summer creating quilled drawings. For those of you unfamiliar quilling is the Victorian craft of creating picture and decorations with thin strips of coiled paper. This summer I have been bringing this teqnuqie into the 21st century by starting my work in the computer; then I print, cut out, quill and photograph, finally I bring it back into the computer for some finishing touches.

I love Rant with all of my heart and have read it so many times I have lost count. There was so much inspiration I could have tapped into when creating this piece. I considered the tooth fairy and santa clause, that line of thinking lead me to make a totally different work. However I couldn’t pass up the chance to create a piece depicting the the moment of time travel.

I can’t figure out how to up load the poster to this post, so here is a link to my blog.

Granny Bel

I carried out a quick search but couldn't find anything on this this topic. I wondered if I'm missing something?

Pages 238 and 256 give us the impression that GTS/Charles Casey first travelled back in time to begin his stoking spree by impregnating Hattie. Hattie then gives birth to Esther who gives birth to Irene who gives birth to Rant. All good so far. However, P238 reveals that there was another similar event that took place prior to this chain of events in which 'granny Bel' was attacked at the age of 13 by a person unknown. So the all important question in my mind that I can't figure out is who impregnated 'Granny Bel'?

Logic relating to the car crash that killed Echo's parents

I'm confused by the logic describing the car crash that killed Echo's parents. On P252 we are told "the automotive industry reasons a driver will take evasive action and hit the brakes before the moment of impact." That makes sense to me. However, later in the novel, Echo advises that "The officer at the scene reported that our car never slowed as it crossed the centreline. No skid marks proved my mum had tried to brake.". Surely a lack of skid marks would show that no attempt had been made to try to brake before the impact? doesn't this demonstrate, despite what Echo asserts, that the car crash was intentional? what motive could Echo have for wanting to believe otherwise?
