Hey everyone,
We're doing some late Summer renovations at The Cult and one of the sections we would like to improve upon is our Book sections. We never had a great Quotes addition to each book section. Rather, I had to do outside links to other read more »
Was Diary based on SCAD and the Savannah Tybee Island area?
There are some similarities in the area and the book, I wonder if Chuck spent any time there.

Carpentry Superstitions and Myths
Hello Cult members, a friend of mine, wanting to be a carpenter himself, wishes to expand the research on the interesting topics of carpentry presented in the book for a soon-to-be high school project. Do you have any ideas as to how to narrow researching the topic, find credible sources, or maybe even come close to identifying the sources Palahniuk used?
Thank you for your time and responses,
ES
Diary as Inspiration
I've read all of Palahniuk's books and I consider him to be one of the best writers of all time. If he isn't the bastard love child of Vonnegut, I don't know who is. I would allow several of my limbs to be chopped off, if I could have his talent.
That said, imo Diary was his best book ever. Rant comes close, but Diary was overwhelming in its beauty and layers of meaning. This book inspired me to write a piece of flash fiction centered around the line 'There are a thousand ways to kill yourself without dying dying' (sorry, that was from memory, I don't think it's an exact quote).
Diary, and Chuck, are also inspirations for my current WIP novel.
I'm not sure why more people haven't read it. I tell writers about it and they usually haven't heard of it. This is a tragedy.
The Ending - spoilers
how come, instead of publishing the book, she didn't...PAINT it... you know. that'd last long...

General Nonsense
I just finished Diary, I thought it was an amazing book, a little different, but nonetheless good.
Is it true that you always just see yourself? You never really see someone else, you just see parts of yourself in them or parts you lack. If that's the case, then why am I a stranger?
If everything's a self-portrait then what does this say about me?
trouble?
hi all. im having a hard time reading diary. love all his others but this one is having a hard time keeping my attention. thinking about putting it down and start to read invisible monsters. whaddya think? also would like to recommend the book "Goth" by this Japanese author. its amazing.
How did she write this Diary towards the end.
Hello Everyone.
I'm brand new to this board, and found it in my search for answers to questions that I had after reading Survivor. I thought back to when I read "Diary" a couple months back and thought I'd give this a shot.
Now, I may have missed some important part that explained this, but I gave the book back and can't give it a second glance. Toward the end of the diary, when Misty was all messed up in the hospital bed, how was she able to put all of this info in her diary? As far as I could tell she was barely with it, messed up on drugs, strapped to a bed, blind, but then here is her diary... quite sensibly written. If she was as screwed up as the diary would have you believe, how on earth could she have written all of this in a sensable manner? Shouldn't it have been a bunch of nonsense? Did someone else write this portion of it and I missed a clue somewhere?
Some of these posts are quite old... I hope someone can answer this for me.
Thanks!
