Douglas Coupland
Really the "Godfather" of such work, every single person who reads Chuck should read his debut novel, Generation X, if for no better reason than to see where all these themes first appeared in the modern day. His characters aren't as extreme as Chuck's, but maybe that's the point here: that there are other alternatives to reinventing your life besides the, "complete, right away destruction of civilization." Plus he's an amazing visual artist to boot.
