Denis Johnson
SEE ALSO: AMY HEMPEL. In the Poets & Writers interview Chuck did for Choke, he claimed he'd read Johnson's short story / novel Jesus' Son over 300 times. And his influence can be felt all over Chuck's work, from the terse style with which he tells his stories, to the actual career path that Chuck seems to be following. It seems like more than mere coincidence that his Fugitives and Refugees is following hot on the trail of Johnson's own (and amazing) nonfiction collection, Seek: Reports from the Edges of America and Beyond. If Chuck starts releasing collections of poetry or writing plays, we should all be worried. But until then, Johnson's one great read.
