Amy Hempel
IF YOU HAVEN'T READ HEMPEL, THEN YOU DON'T KNOW CHUCK. How's that for blunt? But seriously, every fan of Palahniuk needs to read her books. In At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom and Reasons to Live, especially, you'll see the inspiration of themes, and even outright scenes, borrowed liberally and transposed into Chuck's books. Her books are either out of print or else really close to it, so if you can find them, snatch 'em up as fast as you can. And if you can't, check your local library. But read Amy Hempel. Any f*cking way you can.
