Alex Garland

Author of, among other things, The Beach, here's another author whose work's been underscored by poor film adaptation. Although his themes reach back and borrow liberally from other classics (who doesn't?), like William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, it's pretty obvious that Garland's work adds something new to our culture. Looking forward to his next book, 28 Days Later, as it sounds like it's going to be more terse, and more to the point.

The Beach... Definitely worth a read. I plan on reading Garland's other novels. The Beach movie was oh so dissapointing, left out some amazing characters.

There are not too many other "novels," unfortunately. I liked The Beach, and he had a decent follow-up, then disappeared, then came out with something in '04 that was less than stellar, and then disappeared again. 28 Days Later and Sunshine are actually printed screenplays vs. novels. But at least that tells us what happened to him. Yeah screenplays are where the money's at, I hear.
