October 07 - Book Club
Oh sorry. I was meaning to post this but I've been really busy.
I will take suggestions and then post a poll. Any suggestions - go ahead and post them here.

I just ordered a bunch of new books, so I will suggest some of those.
Sophie's World
Everything is Illuminated
I can't remember what else I ordered..

I just picked up Lanark by Alasdair Gray, largely on the recommendations of a couple of culties. I was just about to start it, so i'm gonna suggest that.
EDIT: Actually I don't think it's in print (I had to get it used from amazon), so that may actually be a bad idea.
Um, At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien, then. It's wonderful.
Lanark is definitely still in print. In fact, a new edition was released a few months ago.
I bought it on Phils recomendation so if you guys go with it I will certainly move it to the top of my list and take part. Otherwise I will go with what you suggest, its about time I joined in on these discussions.
Dark past, bright future, living abroad, well read. You're like the reincarnation of James Dean, hopefully with better driving skills ( Tomstrong on me, best compliment I ever got! )

Wait, phil, I don't remember, are you in the US or the UK or somewhere else?
Because for the life of me, I couldn't find the damn thing anywhere that wasn't used here in the US.

I'm in the UK. You should be able to order it online, if nothing else works. Amazon seems to have it in stock.
Anyways, I've never partaken in a monthly book discussion, so my suggestion is only made because it's a damn fine book and people should read it anyway.
Dang, September is almost over, isn't it?
Three suggestions off the top of my head, both are pretty quick reads:
Blindness - Jose Saramago
Digging The Vein - Tony O'Neill
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven -Sherman Alexie
-kristopher
(edited because I obviously can't count to 3)
Junot Diaz has a new book- The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao. I'm waiting for my copy to come in. It sounds promising.
I was actually thinking this one too.

I'm still taking suggestions. I'm going to compile them in the next day or two to make a poll.
So please keep them coming.

I've been looking at Lanark and it seems hard to find in the US for under $18 plus shipping.
Blindness - Jose Saramago
That's a pretty good book. I read it a while ago when I found out they were making a movie based on it.
In fact, they were shooting scenes here in São Paulo just this weekend.
I would certainly go with Blindness, Kristopher Young was kind enough to host the last discussion and if we go with his book he might stick around!!!!!
Dark past, bright future, living abroad, well read. You're like the reincarnation of James Dean, hopefully with better driving skills ( Tomstrong on me, best compliment I ever got! )
Another suggestion: Average American Male by Chad Kultgen.
Damn funny book.
Having looked it up and read loads of positive reviews - one titled "Chuck Palahnuik and Paul Neilan had a bastard love child and his name is Chad Kultgen" - i like this idea a lot!
Apathy And Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan is the funniest book i've ever read.
I'll go with Blindness too. Read it years ago for school when they let us choose a book to read, and I chose Blindness...did a paper on it too. It's a great book for discussion, and a great book in general.
here in my country it's seven the night, go skateboarding!
As soon as ye decide I will see if I can get a copy and join in on it. Im easy I will read anything as long as its not Maeve Binchy.

Sorry Sorry Sorry. I've been super busy lately. I'm getting ready to leave tomorrow to go to hike the smokies this weekend.
I'm going through the suggestions here and I'm going to make a poll based on them.

I've looked up Lenark and the only one I can find is $34 on amazon. Maybe I'm doing something wrong - but I know nobody is going to pay that price. So somebody please help me out here.

Also The Tracey Fragments looks like it's getting re-issued or something. The new version is the only one available - and it's not released yet. There is no date either.
I can't find anything about High Life by Matthew Stokoe either.
The only thing you need to get a library card is a face and a phone number.
I have all of those things, sadly, none of the libraries here have Lanark.

Are they all in the same branch?
My local one didn't have it but I was able to get it shipped in from another library in a couple days easily enough.

18 dollars, or 12 and a bit. Although it says it ships in four to seven weeks, October'd be over by then!
I think one month we should do like a really, really bad book, like Danielle Steele kind of bad. Just to get everyone to work on picking apart the badness and becoming better at critiquing things!
I think that's a great idea. But it's got to be something that readable. Otherwise everybody will just put it down and we won't have a discussion.
I don't see why Being "too long" should rule out Lanark. It isn't that long of a book and anyways, they've done House of Leaves as a Book of the Month thing before and that's way longer.
I'm running behind on this month. So it's going to make it that much harder to get the book. I'm not trying to be an ass though. I promise that - if recommended again to remind me - this list will be put on another list in another month.

Thanks. I didn't know if that was the same one because the others said - Lanark: A Life In Four Books. I thought maybe that was only book one or something?
But still you are right. If we want to do Lanark we have to plan ahead a little better.

that and $18 plus shipping is more that I like to spend on one book, I buy almost all of mine used, but thats just me.
