Diary would be a good movie, I think. I just finished it last night and I really enjoyed it. I find that when I read, I try to picture who would play the lead charachter, Misty. This role totally belongs to Kate Hudson (the young Misty) and Goldie Hawn (the 41 year old Misty). As for the others, I'm not sure.
"I want him declared a nuisance and taken away for the night....I want him declared a nuisance to the community."
Quite easy to cast, if you ask me.
Misty - Mary McDonnell
Peter - Tom Cruise
Angel - Stephen Fry
Grace - Hmm... Mollie Sugden.
Tabbi - Daveigh Chase. Duh.

I really don't think this would be a good movie at all. The pace of the story wouldn't work in a movie without messing it up. I like Chuck's books, but they don't all need to be made into movies.
When you hold nothing sacred everything is funny
Yeah, well, it's gonna happen.
The bed offers no control over sleep. She can't stop thinking. Random images, feelings. The boxcars, hidden in the dark. Fireflies in the distance, the enigmatic numbers. Pale severed limbs wrapped in plastic. Who was the man on the other side of that door?

I still like Goldie Hawn in a fat suit and Kate Hudson as the younger Misty. Who do you think would play the comatose hubby? I'm thinking Will Farell! :^) That's a perfect role for him. Just think of it.....Frank the Tank wearing a nappy sweater and ugly jewelry all the time. "we're going streaking!!"

why is everyone naming old ass actresses to play misty???
I dont know just had to mention this, as i read this post seems like everyone pictures her as an old ass fat woman or something, i never really pictured her as huge, and i didnt really picture her as completely ugly either
I agree that Diary, unless done innovatively and perfectly, wouldn't make a good movie.
It's too much narrative to be scripted in the same way. Unless they have a ridiculous amount of main-character narration.
fight club had a massive amount of main character narration
Re: "anyone think diary would make a good film?"
Diary would be one of the most depressing movies ever. That's one thing I didn't like about this book. All of Chuck's books are dark and depressing, but they are usually really funny too. They have lots of comic relief to break up the mind-numbing morbidness of it all. This book sad, sad, sad, and never comes up for air.
I don't know if making Diary into a movie is a good idea.
The fact that the book is written like a diary is hard to get around
if you really want to get to the real essence of the book.
Though, here is my cast.
Misty - Siobhan Fallon (I really can see her standing over peter saying "CAN YOU FEEL THIS?" *poke*)
Grace - Lauren Bacall
Peter - Gary Oldman
Angel - Harrison Ford :p

up until about five or 6 'chapters' in it was just depressing, and then she started painting and it became an upper for a moment.

I'm surprised to see so many people saying that someone skinny and pretty should play misty. Shes always overweight - even when shes younger. And shes never realy attractive - the kind of person that hollywood doesn't let become a film star.
And Daviegh Chase as Tabbie- Priceless. Give her a year or two and she'd be perfect.

I think Diary would make a freakin awesome movie...just thinking about the image of the sealed up rooms being uncovered sends chills down my back. I also think this is a horribly underrated Palahniuk book. I read all of his novels over the course of about two weeks, starting with lullaby, then fight club, diary, and the rest. I did not go into the reading with any expectations to live up to or any ideas of what it would be like. Diary stands as one of my favorite CP books, and I think it would translate brilliantly into film. There are so many super-strong images in this book that would really make this movie strong...I believe it is already in the process of happening, so i am excited to see what it will be like.
I have to agree here, I just recently finished Diary and thought it was an excellent book, definately an underated novel. As far as movie possibilities I think it would be interesting seeing the movie flashback between past and present times. Overall the idea of Diary as a movie isn't so much scary as it is exciting... I'm not sure who would play a good Misty Marie Wilmot, However, and I know this is going to sound cleche, but Colin Farrell as a young peter wilmot, maybe Johnny Depp, someone attractive, but in a more offbeat sense

the flashbacks should be sepia toned, for a distressed feel.

i think diary would make an awful movie, there's no eye candy. who wants to watch some overweight drunk and a coma patient for 2 hours. plus there is not very much dialouge, how do you act out pages of a diary.
what i think would be a great movie is choke, all the fucked up charecters and sex would be a great to watch on the silver screen.
the first step to failure is trying
I think the older misty should be Kathy Bates (the woman that played in Stephen Kings "Missery")
That's funny. The entire time I was reading the book, in my head, I could imagine Kathy Bates playing the stepmother, Grace. Maybe it was just the way she would try to keep Misty contained, like Kathy Bates' character in Misery.
