Request for favorite quotes!
Hey everyone,
We're doing some late Summer renovations at The Cult and one of the sections we would like to improve upon is our Book sections. We never had a great Quotes addition to each book section. Rather, I had to do outside links to other fan pages that had compiled their list of quotes. But many of these fan sites are no long gone, rendering the link defunct on our end.
So we need you to help us out! Everyone post their favorite DIARY quotes in this thread as replies. After a week or so, we'll take all the quotes and compile them a new quotes sub-section for the respective master section.
Thanks!
Rich People don’t like to tolerate much. Money gives you the permission to just walk away from everything that isn’t just pretty and perfect. You can’t put up with anything less than lovely. You spend your life running, avoiding, escaping. That quest for something pretty. A cheat. A cliché.
These useless details are only useless until you connect them all together.
Everything is nothing by itself.
An artists job is to make order out of chaos. You collect details, look for a pattern, and organize. You make sense out of senseless facts. You puzzle together bits of everything. You shuffle and reorganize. Collage. Montage. Assemble.
No detail is anything by itself.
Everything is a self portrait.
Everything is a diary.
You can’t buy inspiration. You can’t reason your way to an epiphany. Develop a formula. A road map to enlightenment.
While the inspiration comes, you keep going.
A flash of inspiration. A moment of insight.
Our misery. This suppression of our rational mind is the source of inspiration. The muse. Our guardian angel. Suffering takes us out of our rational self control and lets the divine channel through us.
There is nothing special in the world. Nothing Magic. Just physics.
People who look for supernatural reason for ordinary events, those people drive me nuts.
Art, inspiration, love, they’re all so easy to dissect. To explain away.
We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.
Its so hard to hard to forget pain, but its even harder to remember sweetness.
We have no scar to show for happiness. We learn so little from peace.
I can see that my life isn’t an end. It’s a mean to the future.
Just for the record, the weather today is slightly maudlin.
Your whole life is about discovering who you already were.
Doomed to fame. Cursed with talent. Life after Life.
Art school doesn’t teach you how to escape your soul being recycled.
Period revival.
Our own homemade immortality.
How you live inside your head and you only see what you want.
How you only watch the shadows and make up your own meaning.
We already know everything. We just need to remember it.
A couple drinks. A couple aspirin. Repeat.
Somebody’s homemade immortality.
Their lasting effect.
Their Life after Death.
Human kind cannot bear too much reality...
You are the music while the music lasts- T.S Elliot
"...I have danced with your toothbrush stuck up my dirty asshole..."
"Everyones in their own personal coma."
"Just for the record, waking up on drugs with your pubic hair shaved and something plastic stuck in your vagina doesnt necessarily make you a real artist."
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
"You'll need to suffer to make any real art."
"You have endless ways you can commit suicide without dying dying."
"What you don't understand you can make mean anything."
"The job of an artist is just not to forget."
"Inspiration needs disease, injury, madness."
"The paradox of being a professional artist. How we spend our lives trying to express ourselves well, but we have nothing to tell. We want creativity to be a system of cause and effect. Results. Marketable product. We want dedication and disciple to equal recognition and reward."
"The truth is, wherever you choose to be, it's the wrong place."
It's from page 111 and it goes...
'Anytime some well-meaning person forces you to demonstrate you have no talent and rubs your nose in the fact you're a failure at the only dream you ever had, take another drink. That's the Misty Wilmot drinking game.'
Please add that to the quotes page, I love it! It's my favourite quote from a book ever.

Wow. This little thread got CRAZY. People telling me to abuse my girlfriend, people showing an alarming lack of respect for women as a whole, people questioning my masculinity in some kind of bizarre machoistic pissing-contest. Hell, I even got called stuffy.
"You writing, you walking down the street...your whole life shows in every physical action. How you hold your shoulders...What you do with you're hands, you're always blabbing your life story."
That's a scary thought considering masturbation.

"the visionary must live apart from the normal world, and reject comfort and conformity in order to connect with the divine."
"Because everything is important. Every detail. We just don't know it yet."
"Everything you do is a self-portrait. It might look like 'Saint George and the Dragon' of 'The Rape of the Sabine Women', but the angle you use, the lighting, the composition, the technique, they're all you. Even the reason why you chose the scene, it's you. You are every color and brushstroke."
"Before we go any further, you might want to put on some extra clothes. You might want to stock up on some extra B vitamins. Maybe some extra brain cells. If you're reading this in public, stop until you're wearing your best good underwear."

Facts are simple and facts are straight. Facts are lazy and facts are late. Facts all come with points of view, facts don't do what I want them to. Facts just twist the truth around. Facts are living turned inside out. Facts are getting the best of them. Facts are nothing on the face of things. Facts don't stain the furniture, facts go out and slam the door. Facts are written all over your face. Facts continue to change their shape.

In case you dont remember you ran the fucking car in the fucking garage and tried to suffocate your sorry ass with exhaust fumes, but no, you couldnt even do that right, It helps if you start with a full tank of gas.
"Are you an oaf?"
The whole time shes in the room and yelling at him.. that is one of my favorite scenes.
But seriously, I have so many favorite quotes from Diary and a lot of them were already brought up, but my favorite has to be:
What they don't teach you in art school is never, ever to tell people that you wanted to be an artist. Just so you know, for the rest of your life, people will torture you by saying how you used to love to draw when you were young. You used to love to paint.
A couple of drinks. A couple asprin. Repeat.

Besides giving an big nod for:
"Are you an oaf?" and "What you don't understand you can make mean anything." I also liked...
The ongoing "Te amo" ( I just like how it was as fake as the soap opera it came from)
"If you're here, you've failed again."
I also loved all of the nondescript corporate mottos:
"When You're Ready To Stop Starting Over"
"Where Progress Is Not Staying In One Place"
"Using Your Past Mistakes To Build A Better Future"
Etc, etc,..
"You have endless ways you can commit suicide without dying dying."
"Yeah, fucking lucky me."
I'm more for the quotes that really aren't special out of context. The things that I will remember as being an important part in making the story, the picture, real to me.
question first..... Dr toudet? is that the right spelling of the doctor talking about miracles?

many others but that one was by far my favorite
This is my favorite quote too. I am re-reading Diary right now. It is one of my favorite Chuck books.
...the flood of you, with your bottomless hunger of noisy demands...your blood is our gold... you a plague, trailing your failures and garbage... murdered despite all your money and status... they will kill all of God's children if it means saving our own... all of you butchered...
These are the three layers of your skin.
These are the three women in your life.
The epidermis, the dermis, and the fat.
Your wife, your daughter, and your mother.
This may reflect poorly on me but this had me in stitches:
On television, a man shouted "Te amo...Te amo..." again and again to a
dark-haired girl with brown eyes and feathery long eyelashes while he kicked
her down a flight of stairs.

He smiled Peter’s same half smile, the look of someone laughing over the fact that he had cancer. The look of someone facing a firing squad of clowns with real guns
I don't know why but that stood out for me too.
