Request for favorite quotes!
Hey everyone,
We're doing some late Summer renovations at The Cult and one of the sections we would like to improve upon is our Book sections. We never had a great Quotes addition to each book section. Rather, I had to do outside links to other fan pages that had compiled their list of quotes. But many of these fan sites are no long gone, rendering the link defunct on our end.
So we need you to help us out! Everyone post their favorite INVISIBLE MONSTERS quotes in this thread as replies. After a week or so, we'll take all the quotes and compile them a new quotes sub-section for the respective master section.
Thanks!
This one is priceless:
"You are going to tell me your story like you just did. Write it all down. Tell that story over and over. Tell me your sad-assed story all night"..."When you understand...that what you're telling is just a story. It isn't happening anymore. When you realize the story you're telling is just words, when you can just crumble it up and throw your past in the trashcan...then we'll figure out who you're going to be." pg 61

Hopefully this is word for word, as I haven't read the book in 2 months, and I'm at work. This is from the scene where the narrator is re-introduced to solid foods.
"Everything pulverized or crushed or mashed. You are what you eat."
That line is so twisted, I had to laugh for a good minute.
(the last one is my favorite)
What's burning down is a re-creation of a period revival house patterned after a copy of a copy of a copy of a mock-Tudor big manor house. It's a hundred generations removed from anything original, but the truth is aren't we all?
When did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?
Oh, and this goes way beyond sorry, Mom. Sorry, God. At this point, I'm not sorry for anything. Or anybody.
Everybody here thinks the whole story is about them. Definitely that goes for everybody in the world.
I told you! I spent last summer with my uncle hunting wolverines!
"You're a product of our language and our laws and how our laws are and how we believe our God wants us. Every bitty molecule about you has been thought out by some million people before you. Anything you can do is boring and old and perfectly okay. You're safe because you're trapped inside your culture. Anything you can conceive is fine because you can conceive it. You can't imagine any way to escape. There's no way you can get out. The world is your cradle and your grave."
"What it boils down to is professional modeling means getting paid to overreact to stuff like rice cakes and new shoes."
Only when we eat up this planet will God give us another. We'll be remembered more for what we destroy than what we create.
"When you go out with a drunk, you'll notice how a drunk fills your glass so he can empty his own. As long as you're drinking, drinking is okay. Two's company. Drinking is fun. If there's a bottle, even if your glass isn't empty, a drunk, he'll pour a little in your glass before he fills his own. This only looks like generosity."
"Who you are moment to moment is just a story."
"A knife, it felt like a knife, and I'd discovered that despite everything that's happened, I still had an endless untapped potential for getting hurt."
"All these thousands of miles later, all these different people I've been, and it's still the same story. Why is it you feel like a dope if you laugh alone, but that's usually how you end up crying? How is it you can keep mutating and still be the same deadly virus?"
"Now is the autumn of our ennui."
"Go figure, but Texans seem to be a lot more comfortable around disastrous house fires than they are around anal sex."
My favorites are:
"Your heart is my pinata."
"Almost all the time, you tell yourself you're loving someone when you're just using them.
This only looks like love."
"Upside down she could be a complete stanger."
"This is Myss Arden Scotia, of the Denver River Logging and Paper Scotias." Another victim of the Brandy Alexander Witness Reincarnation Project.
"You could choke on the silence."

Nobody is all the way dead yet but lets just say the clock is ticking. pp15
Another thing is no matter how much you think you love sombody, you'll step back when a pool of their blood edges up too close. pp16
Conditions change and we mutate. pp81
Santa Clause us just a story. He's just the opening band to God. There is no Santa Clause.
Its not that we don't love you, it's just that we dont show it. pp100
The future is just wasted on some people. pp102
I'd smile too, you know, if i had any lips pp103
When did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?
Only when we eat up this planet will God give us another. We will be remembered more for what we destroy than what we create. pp104
When we don't know who to hate, we hate ourselves
Even if i overcompensate, nobody will ever want me. Not Seth. Not my folks. You cant kiss someone who has no lips. Oh, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me. Ill be anyone you want me to be.
This only looks like generosity
It wasnt horrible, but it wasnt love
so here are my faves. i left out all of the he said she said stuff, so the quotes are down to the essentials. again, i am sorry for repeats.
shotgunning anybody in this room would be the moral equivalent of killing a car, a vaccuum cleaner, a Barbie doll. erasing a somputer disk. burning a book. probably that goes for killing anybody in the world, we're all such products. (p. 12)
She says "do you love me?" it's when folks ask questions like this that you lose the spotlight. this is how folks trap you into a best-supporting role. even bigger than the house being on fire is the huge expectation that i have to say the three most worn-out words you'll find in any script. they're just words is all. powerless. vocabulary. dialogue. (p. 18)
gotta go now, but i will post more. how can i not?
my favorite line from the whole book was the last one.
"I don't need them at this moment, or the next,or the next, forever.
Completely and totally, permanetly and without hope, forever and ever, I love Brandy Alexander.
And that's enough" :(
Shannon to her parents:
"Felching," I lower my voice. I'm calm now. "Felching is when a man fucks you up the butt without a rubber. He shoots his load, and then plants his mouth on your anus and sucks out his own warm sperm, plus whatever lubricant and feces are present. That's felching. It may or may not," I add, "include kissing you to pass the sperm and fecal matter into your mouth."
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring. "
"The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person."
"When we don't know who to hate, we hate ourselves."
"When did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?"
"another thing is no matter how much you think you love somebody, you'll step back when the pool of their blood edges too close"
"when you dont share your problems, you resent hearing thr problems of other people."

:(, indeed......
"all God does is watch us then kill us when we're boring. we must never, ever be boring."
Out of all the Palahniuk novels, I couldn't think of a character that embodies me more than Shannon - that made it incredibly difficult to select a single quote, but this one is particularly poignant for me personally...
"Love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, I'll be anybody you want me to be. Use me. Change me. I can be thin with big breasts and big hair. Take me apart. Make me into anything, but just love me."
give me a face. Flash
i still find the funny
It’s all a dream until you wake up and realize that you never slept last night and that’s real blood on your hands. The axe you can see in the corner of your eye, that’s your axe. You used it last night when you killed her. It all comes flooding back. Now you start thinking.
Where’s the body?
Can it be traced to me?
Who the fuck did I kill?
What’s happening to me?
I didn’t do this shit, did I?
"hysteria is impossible without an audience. panicking by yourself is the same as laughing alone in an empty room. you feel really silly."
"Anymore, when I see the picture of a twenty-something in the newspaper who was abducted and sodomized and robbed and then killed and here's a front-page picture of her young and smiling, instead of me dwelling on this being a big, sad crime, my gut reaction is, wow, she'd be really hot if she didn't have such a big honker of a nose. My second reaction is I'd better have some good head and shoulder shots handy in case I get, you know, abducted and sodomized to death. My third reaction is, well, at least that cuts down on the competition." page 16
"and sometimes being mutilated can work to your advantage. all those people now with piercings and tattoos and brandings and scarification... what i mean is, attention is attention." page 53
"it's not that i'm some detached lab animal conditioned to ignore violence, but my first instinct is maybe it's not too late to dab club soda on the bloodstain." page 13
On game shows some people will take the trip to France, but most people will take the washer dryer pair.
-Brandy Alexander
Game shows are designed to make us feel better about the random, useless facts that are all we have left of our education.
-Seth Thomas
When we don't know who to hate, we hate ourselves.
-Narrator
The rest have already been mentioned...
My favorite quotes from this book are:
* "Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I've ever known."
* "We are all such products."
These quotes are so true. I just can't express how much I love Chuck's books. He is my favorite writer!
