Anyone from Portland?
yeah, actually. The day after F&R came out, my friend and I decided to check out a couple places.
We went to the World's Largest 10 Commandments, which is actually on my old synagogue building, I just never knew that all that hebrew was the 10 Commandments.
We also went to Leprechaun Park, which is right near my dad's office, which I also never knew about.
And, we went to the "Haunted" Heathman Hotel, and were asking people about the photograph and hauntings and such. The waitress seemed quite surprised to hear people asking about it, cuz she hadn't heard about it in at least 6 years she said.
And... yeah. That was our adventure.
Mother Superior: "Would sir care for a starter? Some garlic bread perhaps?"
Renton: "No, thank you. I'll proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please."

Cool :)
I really fancied seeing the old timber road, but probablly never will :(
I'd have to go and have a look at the spot where Chuck got beat up too. That's probably me being morbid though :)

Is that your real teddy bear?
"I've never caught a jewel thief before. It's very stimulating."
Frances Stevens, To Catch a Thief
"Jeff, you know if someone came in here, they wouldn't believe what they'd see? You and me with long faces plunged into despair because we find out a man didn't kill his wife. We're two of the most frightening ghouls I've ever known."
Lisa Fremont, "Rear Window"
The one that I wanna see is.......Gleall castle I think it's called. The one with no straight edges and such. I just hafta find the time to hunt it down...

I just finished the book today and I think the underground tunnels would be awesome. Plus, you gotta have a look for Chucks tonsills :)
Jordie - no, it's Bungle the Bear offf of the old Rainbow kids TV show!

i'm going to the zoo in August, maybe i'll check out the animals he mentions. But i'm actually trying to put aside time to check out everything i possibly can that he mentioned in the book.
It's wierd. I disliked Oregon so much i wanted to move, but now i'll have to reconsider.
I've been to a lot of the places he mentioned, having lived in the area for a decade or so. But I was a bit shocked that I hadn't heard of some of the things in there. I'm not entirely sure how Santa Rampage escaped my notice.
The book does a pretty good job of touching on most of the underground culture in Portland, which I think is quite an achievement. I think I would be a bit too intimidated to explore some of the places he mentioned, but I hope to go to Elk Rock Island by the end of the week.
The day the book came out I called Mike Jones to see about booking a tunnel tour. They've been suspended until further notice. The problem about those tours is the tunnel entrances are located beneath normal operating businesses. This isn't the first time Mike has had to pull the plug on the tours until a new business could be found who'd be willing to let him drag 10-15 people down into their basement.

Everything will go smoothly this week, except for the part with the
monkeys and the cream pies.
Ya, im from Portland. Most of the places in the book were new to me. I was so excited reading this, because I had always thought that the city had absolutely nothing to do. Should have dug a little deeper I guess. Some of the stuff I don't think you could find, unless you knew exactly where to look.
I wish someone could find out some interesting things about the place I live! I wonder who will be the first to find Chuck tonsilles (can't soell that, I know)

I live in p-town but have never been in the underground tunnels - they look really fucking scary. The part of town they're under, Old Town, is defintely the cool place to be - if you are a homeless drug dealer or a prostitute ... just joking, but yeah a lot of the things were new to me, it renewed my interest in portland
i was born in Portland... but i haven't been back in quite a while.
now women and children hate me!
and the army sure won't take me!
so how do i earn my living?
by killing the baby seals! ar ar!

A couple of friends and I were talking about going downtown for the tunnel tour last week after work. Then we decided to go eat at an Indian place in Beaverton instead. Then one of my friends called my cell to say his truck wouldn't start. So none of us went anywhere that was featured in Fugitives and Refuges that day. But at least I got this great story out of the deal instead.

Clausterphobia, or mobility? (If it's cool to ask).

Maybe the tunnel tours won't work out. How much of the other stuff in Fugitives and Refugees can you get to, time and money permitting?

They could pull you on a tobaggan or strap you to the back of a really strong retarded kid. Lead him wiht a candy bar on a fisihing rod.
Finding interesting things to do in any city is possible, it just takes a certain type of person. Here is a link to a club I used to be part of many years ago. The adventures were certainly wonderful and enlightening but as they became more about mapping uniform tunel systems I lost interest. Urban ruins are my thing!. I've found some interesting things to do in my new home town but I don't have the drive it takes to actually leave the house and do this anymore. Sooner or later I need to explore the remnants of the old Studebaker factory and adjacent industrial refuse. Been meaning to for months.

What would Judas do?
I have some relatives (Uncle and wife and his children) that live in Portland. I always knew it was a different place, but I brought the book down with me last time I went to visit and my uncle and I had a great time checking out some of the spots mentioned in the book.
i'm not from portland but i did spend a little time there last summer.
i checked for the ghost at Powell's and didn't see anything except a woman sitting next to the fountain whom i sensed was also waiting for him.
i also checked out one of the ... "clubs" he mentioned. i won't say anything more about that.
:p
I live in Portland, and I went to high school at Metropolitan Learning Center. I was so disappointed because the year after I graduated Chuck came for project week and did a workshop. My friend Rachel was in that class and she was quoted in the book! I was so jealous...
