Alright its been about a month and half since i finished IM so the book is a little fuzzy in my mind. Anyways i was reading the "gay" thread and it sparked a thought i had a while back.

Shane (aka. Brandy Alexander... err right??) well, whatever names aren't the point. Shane thought his life sucked or something, or he was so disgusted with what he saw in the world, or _______________ what was his reason for changing himself??

My other question is --- wasn't shane just acting gay to piss his parents off and shock everyone, or was he really gay??

He was gay. That's why he got a sex change. I don't think I'd get a sex change just to freak people out.

Grade 5 Dropout, I respect your opinion, but I don't think Shane got the sex change because he was gay. That's a horrible misconception about the gay community (all gay men wanna be women, all lesbians wanna be men).

If I'm not mistaken - isn't there a big speech towards the end about how he got a sex change because it was the ONE THING that he wanted the LEAST?

I think he did it to understand himself more. It was the biggest mistake he could make.

And about what I said about him getting the change because he was gay - I didn't mean to say ALL gay men want to be women, but it happens.

just fyi, if someone actually has Gender identity disorder, which most people who get sex changes have, they don't consider themselves gay. instead they are disgusted with the sex organs they were born with and feel that some horrible mistake was made. so a man with GID considers "himself" a heterosexual woman. it's confusing, don't think about it too much. Shane, was confused about his sexuality as many people with GID would be. however, since he said it was the biggest mistake he could have made, it seems unlikely he actually had this disorder.

That's totally right on. Someone with GID probably wouldn't view gender transition as "the biggest mistake," but instead see it as the complete opposite, I know I did(yes, I know GID first hand). Also, the whole idea of whether or not someone who changes gender is in fact gay, depends largely on who they dig and what gender they see themselves, if they see themselves as any gender at all. Just don't make the assumption that all transsexuals are gay. As far as whether or not Shane is gay, I can't really find any real hard fact to prove one or the other. Just because a guy sucks a couple dicks and becomes a women, doesn't make him gay. If he did indeed dig guys, then he would be gay. That is until he transitioned and became a she, at which point she would be straight. If she likes women, she's in fact a lesbian. Confused? Good.

I'd consider Shane's actions along the same lines as the people who wish to have limbs amputated. Some do it for some weird sexual reason, other's out of self loathing.

A man with GID who considers himself a heterosexual woman, disgusts the organs he was born with?... Hmmm... I don't think disgust is the appropriate word, since I don't think hetero sexual women are disgusted with male organs (otherwise the procreation process would be quite difficult).

A man in a woman's body has got to have the joy of his/her life... to have those assets, all men like to touch, with him/her 24/7...

I'm guessing you'd get that removed at your first opportunity. I've done a lot of research about GID, since it's such a big part of my screenplay (now out of option, goddman it) along with apotemnophilia and other body dysmorphia. Shane wasn't a "homo". Shane only did this transformation because it would be the most chalenging thing he could do with his life. The most painful, emotionally and phisically. Its the same reason "Daisy St. Patience" did that to herself.

When you think about it, there' s no proof Shane was ever gay. The only homosexual encounter listed was with Manus, who basically molested him. And, yeah, the reaosn Shane became Brandy was because it was the msot f***ed thing he could do.

No he wasn't gay. He said that all Manus' encounter did was leave him hurt and confused, not aroused. He was not gay but incredibly fucked up and crazy.

You guys...he wasn't gay. He got the sex change because he wanted to do something totally crazy, something he really wanted to NOT do. His first choice was losing the arm and the leg - that's not a sign of homosexuality. His PARENTS thought he was gay, fed that idea to Shannon as she was growing up. They thought he was gay because he got an STD from Manus - it never says what kind, but it was a deep-throat kind of deal that you'd probably only get from...yes. Well. He wasn't gay. He was just a little nutty.

 I thought he was gay and got the sex change not because he was gay, but because he wanted self-mutilation. I think his sex change is completely unrelated to his sexual orientation in the novel.
