Do you think Chuck realizes...

That Fugitives and Refugees is basically going to turn into his "book that describes places I can never go back to because my fans are going to always be there looking for me"

It was just a thought I had. Maybe he really doesn't care if he's spotted by fans. Even as nice as he is at book singings, it's bound to get annoying if everytime he leaves his house to go to one of his favorite spots, there's someone waiting with a book to have autographed.

LOL that's a funny idea. but i don't think he's THAT much of a recognizable celebrity.

there ARE thousands of members on this forum. but i would wager that pretty much the only ppl who could recognize chuck physically, esp. pick him out of a crowd, are those that post here, maybe a couple thousand more (esp. since he doesn't really look much like his pics in the back of his books, at least imo). given that there are 266 million people in this country, and given that chuck's a fairly nondescript looking guy, it's unlikely he gets noticed unless he announces himself. and even then ppl might not know who he is.

i mean, it seemed at the time like there were a lot of ppl at the book signing i went to in boston. but at most there were like 400. and that was when ppl knew he was going to be there at that specific place. even up at the book signing table some ppl had to have him pointed out cause they brought their books to the wrong person. if you compare this to the way thousands of ppl start rioting if michael jackson even goes to the mall in las vegas, i don't think chuck has much to worry about.

there's all that plus the fact that hopefully chuck fans are smart enough to know that chuck's smart enough not to make himself conspicuous in these places, (or anyplace) and maybe even smart enough to know that stalking him in any form--esp. when he makes himself so available to his fans--is not cool.

Chuck couldn't be inconspicuous if he tried. You've seen the size of the man's arms!!

I'm not saying that millions of people are going to flock to portland now. But writing the travel guide of portland certainly increases the likelyhood that he'll run into someone who's looking for him. Think of how many of us on this site thought "man, it'd be so fun to take a trip to portland after I read that book." I just hope for his sake that his book doesn't take some of the fun out of his home town for him.

In fact, we should all agree that if we go to portland and spot The Man, we'll do nothing more than nod at him (how Tyler Durden-esque!) unless he approaches us.

dude, just cause he's jacked doesn't mean he necessarily stands out that much.

frankly i think i'd walk right by him. i'm so absentminded i probably wouldn't even notice him.

I'd probably just end up saying something like, "Hey, good job" after drawing a blank on anything better to say.

So, if I'm ever in Portland, I should watch for someone who's about 7 feet tall, ripped, and has a freakishly long neck, right? :)

The easy way to find Chuck in public is to look for the man who's walking around with the turtleneck pulled up all the way over his head.

That's him.

Or.......what if all the places he writes about in the book aren't really his favorite places, just a bunch of bull shit to get folks riled? That's what I'd do if I wrote a book about my favorite places, but thats just me.

I'd recognize him on the street because of that neck he's got.

Every time I'm in Portland, I always have my eyes peeled, keeping watch for him, but I never ever see him. It's very doubtful that in a city of a few hundred thousand (at least) that he'll be in the same place at the same time as a mob of screaming cult members, all hoping to get a piece of that legendary turtleneck. And even if this were to happen, from my experience with Chuck fans, they'd be cool enough to respect his space and privacy, leaving it at a small conversation rather than trying to rip the clothes from his body.

A lot of writers write about the places the are most of the time. It's just the places they know, and are familiar with. You can't really write a book about a place you've never been to, could you?

It's like Anne Rice and New Orleans, Janet Fitch and LA. If they didn't write about places they go to often, it wouldn't be nearly as descriptive, now would it?

Besides, Chuck is an average looking guy. A guy at my school has the same facial bone structure. Plus, when I'm talking about him in a conversation with someone I don't know, I usually I have to go "Chuck Palahniuk, you know? The guy who wrote Fight Club?"

at the reading in boston last night, he came in and sat down in the row right behind us, but i seemed to be the only one that turned around and noticed, and recognized it was him.
besides, i dont think chuck fans would turn into a mob of squealing fan girls if they saw him walking down the street in portland. at least i hope not.

Most of the places in the book (with few notable exceptions, like cafes or maybe Powell's or... ooh! Forest Park) are not places you frequent often enough to really have that sort of a problem. Except maybe the Santa mayhem or a Cacaphony society meeting, if he still goes to them.

But god... good luck... a lot of Portlanders look/dress that way... Not to say Chuck is bland or anything, but I wouldn't be suprised if I have walked past him completely unknowingly.

So I guess what I am saying-but-not-saying is I would find it pretty damn funny if a group of rabid Chuck tourists out to see the world's smallest park should run into Chuck "walking" his teeny dog in the teeny park and they went rabid fan girl on him. Because all the rest of Portland would stare at it with a "zuh?" look on their faces not understanding why the wierd tourists were freaking out over a guy in a turtle neck. :P

Go to the author forum, and look at the post about a guy who had some beers with Chuck Palahniuk. Mr. Brown then shows a picture of Chuck that he got when he met Chuck. Obviously, the guy is good at changing his appearance.

For sure, the CP I met bore no resemblance to the one in the Lullaby jacket nor the headshot he frequently uses. His pace of speak is unique though, comes off as very thoughtful as if everything he were saying was carefully planned.

Having just finished F&R 15 mins ago i was thinking the same.

It'd be ace to do Portland as set out in the book - i'd do it all bar the really sordid sex stuff probably.

That said, if i seen the man himself, i'd just nod. His private life is his private life y'know. Yeah i'd like an autograph and a photo and a few words, but that can always wait for a signing.

But he doen't always go to these places. It isn't like a daily thing. I dunno. All that book made me want to do was go on that crazy underground thing. But he did make Potland sound like the most fun place ever. He gets out A LOT or a writer.
