...is planning to make a little trip after the book comes out?

Maybe a little "gathering" of sorts could be arranged of enough people are thinking of it....

Will there by Nyquil provided during the "gathering?" I might need some.

If it's going to be like "Magic: The Gathering," I think I'll pass. Thanks. :)

Well, it's not terribly sharp, or long. It is from Mexico, though.

See, I really was referring to an actual sword, and if you didn't realize, go back and read, the thing about it being from Mexico should tip you off. Since I am not. From Mexico originally, that is. Because that would just be weird, if I was referring to the other thing, and it was from Mexico when I wasn't.

On a serious note, the gathering idea sounds good. I am assuming that you would make it in Las Vegas, correct? You know, so everyone can lose their money and come home with a disease?
Just kidding, I know where you mean. Count me in. Unless now you don't want me around. In which case, you can just direct me somewhere else.

Right on, looks like some people are interested. I'm thinking maybe sometime in August, that way the book will already be out, and those that are in school will still be out for summer....

or, maybe his collection of mounted swordfish. i dunno, really.

if this happens, i will be there(i have the privelege of living nearby). look for the scruffy looking white guy with the joint tucked behind his ear and massive dreadlocks. it won't be me, but in portland, that guy is at any get together.

Why should we buy postage stamps?
We can make our own
We maybe doing something wrong
We could be running a little too long
I guess we better end this song
I say I believe in swordfish
He believes in swordfish

The Dead Milkmen rock my casbah, y0. ;)

i will have to check this group out. if they sing about swordfish, they can't be bad.

about the portland Gathering, we should bug dennis to post it in the events and make it official. although we will probably have to know more than 'sometime in august'.

they're very funny. :) other song titles include "The Thing That Only Eats Hippies", "Earwig", "Smokin' Banana Peels", and "If You Love Somebody Why Not Set Them On Fire?" funny funny funny!

I've been thinking about that... I'm wondering just how "official" this whole idea should be though. I'm not thinking of anything too serious, basically, the same sort of gathering you'd have if you and a bunch of old high school buddies (or whatever) decided to take a trip together after not seeing each other for a while... keep it on the casual side.

Part of this is because it's really not a lot of advance notice to arrange anything really involved, and partly because I don't want people to get the idea that it'll be like the con.

At any rate... I need to get a job soon so that I can make sure I'll be able to go!!!!! :D

I've got a BITCHIN' CAMMMMMMMMARO!!! No worries, brah, that's the only song I really know too.
Count me in on the gathering in P-town if it happens. I'll totally be there. I spend my summers right across the Columbia River from there, so it'd be quite convenient. I'm sure I and a few of the other local cult members can be navigators for the book, making sure we don't end up on the opposite side of town that we're supposed to be on if we want to see, I dunno, the place where Chuck first choked on half a steak to see if the whole plot line would pan out.

I used to have a Camaro, but it had so many electric and other problems that it was just a bitch to fix, not bitchin'. I had to leave it behind in Florida six years ago when I moved up here.

I'd be tempted to do the mass-choking, but knowing my luck it'd probably end up being not-so-fake, and y'know... dying on vacation would really put a damper on my fun. ;)

i like the idea of people from the area acting as navigators. My aunt and uncle live there, so I was thinking I could probably also get some help from them.

One thing though - if we do the mass-choking, I say we also hit a strip club with sketch pads. ;)

Mass choking and strip sketching OR an orgy choke? Very tough decision, but I think I'm gonna have to stick with the first combo. Of course, maybe with a little bit of liquid persuasion (aka Nyquil).... Anyway, I'm starting to get pretty psyched for this so it better happen!

Okay, so what're people thinking as far as timeframe?

If this is going to happen, it's better to start planning sooner than later. :)

Since I don't think the exact release date has been announced yet, I'm stilll thinking August would be best, so that people will have had time to pick up the book and go through it a bit, but people in school would still have some time before classes start.

(There's also the fact that my birthday - i mean, Edward Norton's birthday - is in the middle of August is just you know... a little bonus. ;))

Thoughts?

You guys are crazy, I wouldn't go anywhere with you. Too much excitement waiting to happen with that one. Though, I'm sure that fake-choking would be quite entertaining. Can never be too careful with Chuck Palahniuk fans, he draws too big of a variety.

August is good, though for me anything outside would need to be after dark. Where are we planning to meet, for how long, and what are we going to do (other than choking and sketching)? Checking out places in the book sounds good, and maybe watching Fight Club together if we can get something set up for it.

if we do it in august, there are places where we can rent projectors and watch it outside. otherwise, i'd say bug the various theatres to do a private screening.

Okay.

Here's my take on planning things at this point:

My original thought when proposing the idea was primarily to get together with some others to check out Portland using the book as a guide and meet some of the very nifty people that post here. Since it hasn't come out yet (and won't for another four and a half months or so), I don't know how much of that can really be "planned" at this point.

That said, I really like the idea of a screening, and got the general run-down on how to set one up from my old rocky manager. Unfortunately, this would be a lot easier to arrange if I were actually in Portland (or reasonably close). Is there anyone who'd be willing to help out in this area? :(

Okay, now for some more practical stuff -

These are some things that I've been thinking about and would really appreciate some input on:

How big a group would we be looking at here?

How does everyone want to go about accomodations? Should we try to pick one or two places that everyone will try to stay at in order to make things a little easier, or do we want to just see what everyone can find on their own? Would people like some way to arrange roommates to split a room or whatnot?

If we have a screening of the movie, do we want it to be a private thing or would we want to open it to the general public?

What other things would y'all like to do while we're out there?

How long should this whole thing be? Granted, this would be easier to figure if we already had the book in our hands and knew a little more about what's inside, but realisticaly speaking, We should probably figure out a rough estimate within the next couple of months since people will be requesting vacation time in August, and that's typically a first-come, first-serve thing.

As far as dates, I'm proposing August 8th through the 11th. That's a Friday through Monday, before schools will be starting up again, and a full month after the book is set for release. Friday - Monday = less time people will probably have to take off work. Non-school season = less chance for scheduling conflicts. Full month after release = time for people to get their copies and a chance to possibly sketch out an outline of the things people would most like to do while we're there.

This is just thinking off the top of my head, trying to figure out the smoothest way to get things set up... I'd love to hear from the people considering this and have set up a seperate email for it here
(fugitives@sbcglobal.net). Regardless of whether or not this ends up happening, I know I'll be there come August, I just think it'd be fun to see some of you there. :)
