Ukrainian 'Fight Club' Prank On Side Of Apartment Building

Ukrainian 'Fight Club' prank on side of apartment flat.

Wow. This is just awesome. It seems a group of activists in the Ukraine calling themselves the UA Resistance, invoked the spirit of Tyler Durden by lighting up the side of an apartment complex in the form of a giant smiley face. The act was done in a non-violent effort to make a statement about the corruption causing high prices on apartment flats in the country.

Here's the email I received from the UA Resistance:

We have a present for Chuck on his Birthday:-) Ukrainian TV made a short interview about it, so we think, that it will be funny and interesting to send it to Chuck's fanclub. Where we can send photo of action?)  P.S. Sorry for bad grammar))

Here's the interview and news coverage that made it on Ukrainian TV about the event:

And here are some more details about the event:

"Smile" on building was used as a strange symbol of people's skepticism about corruption-based price on flats in capital of Ukraine. And it really did effect and attract attention without any violence or pain. And that is generally important. Using Chuck Palahniuk's idea of art-resistance its real to do effect without big "counter-violence" from authority.

Gotta love the influence Chuck is having on the world.

They should have just actually blown out the windows. I'm not sure how this is supposed to teach a lesson to those corrupt land lords.

gregislegend is right.

To make your actions speak louder than your words, you can't be soft. You must hit hard and hold no punches. Things can be replaced or rebuilt, but your life and existence cannot. So do something about your short existence and make yourself have purpose of meaning.

Even though you gotta give them thumbs up for the effort.

As a simple action "smile" of course have no direct connection with build-industry corruption in Ukraine. But it isn't simple.

Corporations are cruel and unjust, but they are monopolists. This fact in complex with inefficient state in Ukraine make situation that landlords generally have their right to set so unnormally high flat prices. So people have swallowed it. But at last time corporations have passed the border. They begin to destroy parks, historical or cultural value objects, hospitals, sport stadiums, anything that stand on attractive part of land. And that was mistake. That was clearly and unhidden act of corruption between officials and landlords. And people rapidly organizes in multiple social movements named "SaveOldKyiv".

I think you're tired for my bad english:) so I simply illustrate further development of events by photos and video:

blocking a road to building place, where was unlegally smashed park:

ruining another fence on unlegal building place:

protests against construction, that cause damage to nearest hospital:

Some scandal photos frem news:

http://www.zabudovi.net/art/3/53.jpg
http://www.zabudovi.net/art/3/50.jpg - defence from assault of landord private security.

http://www.zabudovi.net/art/3/51.jpg - private guard hit the journalist and break his arm.

http://www.zabudovi.net/art/6/75.jpeg - local citizens on one of the "trouble" construction's set a civil information post. On photo the result of matutinal ambush by "unknown" people on it..

So I cannot say that there's no actions and only words:) Especially in the context of almost full-sized street-combats that's is very important not to go by the way of landlods. Civil protests need a result, but not street war. So news and society attention is very valuable. Only it can build critical mass of people's resentment and only after it even in fight with multibillion corporations, that have money more than God, will bright ray of hope:)

Thank you for your information, Vector.

Most people in the states are not familiar with what has happened in the Ukraine in recent years. I'm only partially informed because some of the guys I work with are from the Ukraine.

Ye. It's really positive changes for the last 3-5 years. Civil protest for defending human rights and against corruption, protest including streetcombats and night diversions was fully unbelievable for that kind of intimidated "homo sovietikus", which was major part of ukrainians from 1991 till (at least) 2003.

No-no) No Russia) It's a pity, but Russia for today is continuing "why I have to do something? I chosen that bastards, it's bad, that they are bastards, but I have to wait to choose another at next elections! Because I respect law. Even if it doesn't work"...
