UPDATED! 'Snuff' Casting: Thora Birch and Daryl Hannah Not Attached

'Snuff' Casting News Update: Thora Birch and Daryl Hannah Not Attached

UPDATE: Earlier this week I posted a News update about Fabien Martorell, the man who currently has the film option to adapt Snuff.  He informed me that Daryl Hannah, Thora Birch and Tom Sizemore were on board.

The next day, SlashFilm, a respected and very popular movie site that I frequent, posted this story:

http://www.slashfilm.com/anticasting-update-scar/?utm_source=feedburner&...

Here was the portion of the story that concerned this bit of casting news Fabien told me:

But Jeff Snieder from Variety was quick to call out the casting as premature via Twitter. (“Absolutely NO TRUTH to THORA BIRCH doing SNUFF. Hasn’t even read a script. Got a vehement denial. THIS IS WHY YOU CHECK IT WHEN TALENT TALKS.”) And Deadline chimed in with an equally vehement denial for Daryl Hannah, relaying that her reps say she’s never heard of the project. Furthermore, given that she speaks out against sex trafficking, she is ‘embarrassed’ by the association. (Now, I haven’t read Snuff, and the plot sounds rather horrifying, but it also sounds like something that would actually make the sex industry in general and porn specifically look pretty bad and damaging. Perhaps I’m wrong.) So: for now, not happening.

Upon seeing this news, I immediatley emailed Fabien to get him to comment on the development.  Today his rep contacted me with this official statement:

Daryl Hannah and Thora Birch's Agent sent us LOIs (Letter of Intent) with his signature to express their interest in Snuff. After mutual consideration, we have decided not to follow up our collaboration. Tom Sizemore is, of course, still on-board.

At this point, Fabien is moving on with other casting, but he assured me again today, that Tom Sizemore is still on board.

Got to admit. Not on the top of my list of Chuck adaptations I want to see made. Still looking forward to it, though.

You didn't think the book had an element of suspense to it?

Tom Sizemore is the perfect guy for Mr.600. I love the casting for this.

I like Thora Birch. It's not top of my list of Chucks books either, but hey, I'll still drink the coolaide.

That sounds more like it. I just don't see how the story could be good enough for actresses like that to get involved.

Has anyone read a treatment/screenplay yet? Outside of industry types, I mean. More to the point, anyone here read one?

I've always been surprised by talks of adapting this book. I wouldn't be surprised if this film actually hurts the Palahniuk "brand" by popularizing his weakest work. Snuff is the one book that supports the idea of Palahniuk as purely a sensationalist writer.

With so many better, more cinematically-friendly works on the shelf (c'mon Survivor or Pygmy), this should be at the bottom of a long pile... maybe saved for one of those direct-to-Netflix Instant movies.

There isn't a "pile" though; all the novels are optioned by different companies that work at different speeds. That kind of observation makes it sound like Chuck or some committee is choosing which book gets made into a movie next.

To each his own--after reading what the book was going to be about and those hype videos on youtube, I thought that Chuck was selling-out with Snuff. But after I read it, I really liked it.

As for Pygmy, I thought that was going to be awesome. But, in my opinion, that was the hardest for me to read.

Also, there is a huge number of people on this site that LOVE Rant. I thought the book was OK but am more a Survivor or Invisible Monsters fan.

All that being said, I'm all for any Chuck novel being turned into a movie--you never know how the writer and director will view the material. Even with Fight Club, I would've thought that any changes to the story would ruin the movie yet Fincher and Uhls changed a lot. And it worked. The fact is the best book/movie combos are exclusively different. I believe that Chuck even says that he doesn't like to get involved with the film process because it is no longer his story.

That being said, I'm surprised at the option, delighted with the casting, and hoping that this movie will actually be made.

Sounds fishy. If you've got an Letter Of Intent you've got permission to use that person's name for the purposes of promotion.

If the actor then denies knowledge of the project, it's lawsuit time, not BS "mutual consideration" time.

Makes me wonder 1) if the confirmation of Tom Sizemore is just as watertight and 2) how did this Fabien guy get to a position where he could make such a mess of it?

A simple "no" would have sufficed--especially since her last major role that I can think of was a stripper in Dancing at the Blue Iguana.

I forgot about those (and, to her credit, I thought they were well done).

I was just trying to point the hypocrisy of that statement.

Can't wait for this movie hopefully it won't be a total abortion gone wrong like choke although I did enjoy it. I feel cheated out of a great book's adaptation. The story is already written don't put your own spin on it Chuck got it right the first time. But none the less can't wait to see where snuff goes and I LOVE Thora Birch My ultimate dream girl.

It is now the end of October, 2011...any updates on this project? Im starting to feel as I did in the beginning...almost no one can handle a Chuck Palahniuk adaption...fight club set the bar even with its changes to the nature of the book itself, and choke was underwhelming at best. As much as I feel I am dying to experience grand book to film adaptations for my favorite author of all time, it is far worth it to wait rather than be tormented by the loss of Chuck's work's integrity. Still...I am growing impatient. Someone give us fans with the passion and love for these projects, a budget to show hollywood how it's done.
