"Rant" Gets A Movie Option!

'Rant' gets a movie option!

I was contacted this week by a film industry friend and producer who has just optioned the rights to the movie version of 'Rant'. He kindly asked me to keep this nondescript for now, but I can say that 'Rant' is officially optioned now and is in the early stages of development. We'll keep you informed as they progress onward.

For now, take this time to discuss. Would 'Rant' make a good movie? How would you like to see it done?

Did you like this?

I've been saying it would be a great movie ever since i read it. it's my favorite by you so far, which is saying a lot. they editing will have to perfect and in the exact order you give it. don't let them slide that shit around!

Who the hell would direct RANT? It's gotta be done right or people will hate it. I think the documentary format would work best, for obvious reasons, but a good director could come up with something more unexpected format-wise.

just finnished rant today. my brain is still melting. fantastic book.

edward furlong as rant. (watch pecker)

echo should be a nobody and she should be perfect.

i think simon pegg and bruce willis should also be floating around in this movie somewherezzz, maybe as salsemen.

a documentery style would be redundant... not a good redundant. i'd like to se a lot of small jacob's ladder esc hardly noticable tiny things changing periodicly throughtout the film to account for the time space ripping, although that's probably a given.

the focus of this film should be the liminality and communitas aspects of party crashing and everything. everything should be focused on group mentality.

i'd want to see allot of focus on the night/day division thing to. heavy emphasis on that. this is gunna be sweet no matter what though i'm sure.

I wonder if whoever makes this would have the cahones to actually set it in the late 70's like Chuck said he intended it while writing it. That would be pretty awesome if pulled off just right.
I like the Bruce Willis idea too. Might be good to see him as GTS.
ya know, i didn't really care for the book. it was alright just nothing to make me go all squirrely about, but the idea of seeing it as a movie sounds really interesting to me.

Before I saw "Choke" I would've thought not so much on the good-movie idea. But since seeing it? Anything EVER written by Chuck will make an excellent movie.

This book would make an AWSOME movie! Throught the durration of reading it kept thinking how good of a movie it would be. Cant wait to see when it comes out and how its done. I think it should deffinatly have a dark tone to it simmilair to fight club.

YAY! Rant would make an amazing movie! The story is set up like Fight Club where you think it's just a twisted tale of the antihero but then Chuck throws you a sticky curveball toward the end that you can't quite hold onto but you can't throw either. I would love to see this movie made and p.s. can't wait for Choke with Sam Rockwell. He was an excellent choice for the lead and I hope we get someone equally as dark for Rant. And no, I don't think that ANY of those Jackass boys should be invited/allowed to audition. And no, Echo should NOT be portrayed by some hot chick with a gimpy prosthetic arm. And (as much as I looove musicals) no, Rant would NOT translate well into a musical genre. In fact, I don't think a movie form of Rant should really have ANY music. But I hope we don't lose those anthropological snippets in between the interviews. Number one, they are the foreshadowing, number two, they give the guts-and-gore-crash-your-car parts of the book an intelligent leg to stand on and provide a lot of the social commentary and existential ideas which power Chuck's books. The nature of being questions and the answers he poses are a big part of why I read his books.

I would LOVE to see a movie adaptation of this done documentary style... But as many of you have said, ever the novel, you learned little tidbits about each character physically, and I really don't feel like seeing a glamorized Rant Casey or a subdued Echo Lawrence. It's my favorite of ANY CP book, before Fight Club, before Choke. Honestly, I haven't had a novel I've placed on such a high pedestal be made into a movie... Choke is such a close second, and unfortunately it was shown in such limited places, I wasn't about to find one anywhere near where I lived... So I'm still waiting on that. I'm a little upset at some of the trailers I've seen, but I think I'll take the movie for what it is when I see it...

...Above Rant being made into a movie though, I'm more excited if in fact two other books come out to make it a set. No matter what though my support is with Chuck. Unfortunately, people that are relying on a movie like Fight Club are going to be SOL. I like that he's choosing a different director for every movie adaptation instead of locking himself into one.

Let if be known though, J.D. Salinger took his rights to Catcher to the grave... I really hope Rant wouldn't be a let down as an adaptation. Sad

My first thought was Christopher Guest as well, seeing as he is the first thought when someone mentions a Mockumentary. And then I thought, no. No way. I don't think his humor is dark enough.

But then again it would be so strange, merging these two styles.

But of course, Christopher Guest has [virtually] the same cast for all of his movies. And that's fine: it's part of the charm. You know what kind of performance you're gonna get. So that would mean Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard and the whole rest of the gang in the movie.

I can't decide if I like it or not. It scares me. But it's so bizarre...I kinda like it.

I really like the idea of split screens while different charactors are telling the same story. So that it is easy to see the coralations and the differences in their tellings. Especially if the movie used different actors for Rant depending on the perceptions of him. The split screen would make it alot easier to include more of the story in the small amount of time that the movie can handle.

I like the Momento-esque idea, maybe a blend of that and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon style movie, where it's a documentary style but turns into an actual movie at certain points.. That would be pretty cool.

I am reading this book right now, and i must say, it is awesome. i was thinking about what kind of move it would make, and then i came here, finding it may be made into a movie, i am ecstatic.

It would make an interesting movie, but it can just be a bunch of people talking, it would probably end up being a sort of narrative thing, but with more than one narrator...ya know? like what the person is talking about, you will see, while they are talking about it off screen...i dont know, it will be awesome though.

I still havent seen the Choke movie... >.<

it needs to be documentary style with really good unknown actors. hit up some film schools and find the 4 people who don't overact or underact and make them be in it. john malkovich should play green. i can definitely see that though. Smile

I'm reading Rant at the moment and am almost done with it. I also wondered what type of movie it would be and here's what I think...

it should be done documentary style, when the various characters are on screen, talking, their names, status, etc are displayed on screen. Some of their dialogue should be given while they are being filmed at first, but, as we get to know their voices, the dialogue can be given over the top of the scenes.

I also like the idea of things happening in the background while the interviews are taking place...cars going by with xmas tress on top, etc. These elements should be both subtle and obvious to the viewer so that those of us who like to watch movies over and over will spot different things each time.

I also like the idea of using unknown actors/students to play roles, along side better known actors. I have wondered who would play Rant and after watching "Chapter 27" maybe Jared leto would do it well, I am still undeceided though. Rant himself needs to have boyish charm but also a dark side.

I think certain chapters in the book should be included in the movies as almost separate short movies. In the movie "Rules of Attraction" the scene where Victor narates his trip to Europe was almost like a short film within the main film.
I think the chapter where the 'ports' are discussed could be done this way.

I also think different film effects could be used to describe where in the time line of the book the scenes appear. The older scenes shot in grainy, sepia or B/W and newer scenes shot in a crystal clear, comtemporary way. I think some of the effects that were employed in "Fight Club" could be also used in the movie of Rant.

Wow! it seems I have thought about his more than I first thought.

I really love Chuck's books and so far have read Fight Club, Diary, Lullaby, Survivor, Choke and have Invisble Monsters to read after Rant.
His writting really speaks to me and his characters are so well formed and lifelike. Situations in his books are so real but so bizarre, and the messages behind the writting are sometimes rules which, if more people followed, would make this planet a far better and happier place.

I think any of Chuck's books could be made into movies if they are done the right way. One day, before I die, I hope they all will be.
I would like to see all the books filmed in different ways...."Fight Club" was shot so differently than "Choke", but I love them both.

I am so glad this movie is being made and wait with baited breath for it's release. Keep up the good work Chuck.

tim burton as director? or rob zombie?
they are like experts at the whole "dark twist" thing.
maybe thats a stretch.

i kinda like the animation idea though.
but more claymation.
or that computer kind like with toy story and shit.

i dunno.
but im excited.

this is happy in my pants news.

Tim Burton or Rob Zombie directing...yes!
Giovanni Ribisi as Rant....yes!
Adrien Brody as Shot...yes!
John Malkovich as Green....yes!

man, I love this movie already!

What about a mix of film styles; some real film, some animation, some clay-mation, some still/sketches/flicker-book....really mix it up, fuck with some folks heads?
What about a few different directors doing different scenes...hey, the book is made up of short interviews, why can't the flick be a collection of interviews done in different styles.

When's this movie coming out?

Its not gonna come out for a long time.

Its only in pre-production. But, I'm in the middle of reading it and I think a pseudo-documentary would be appropriate for the way the book is set up. It would be hard to portray it as just another Chuck movie.

Not a bad idea for a movie option, but I'm dying to see Haunted get made into a movie.

I'm am studying to become a director right now and I read Rant last year and as I was reading I really wanted to make this into a movie (or at least have someone do it). The documentary was the first way to go about it but it would be too bland if that was the only style the entire movie. I also thought it would be interesting to stylize it the way Inside Man was done like a news crew, CDC, or police interviewing those closest to Rant Casey such as his mother, father and the party crashers then having a news report about the accident and the rabies epidemic going on simultaneously. As far as casting the characters the only one that I thought has to be a certain actress was Jennifer Carpenter playing Echo Lawrence. I thought of Brad Pitt for Buster Casey but I kept going back to thinking about him as the Car Salesmen because he sort of has the same cocky attitude Pitt always seems to add to his roles. Green Taylor Sims was not actually in the book but would have to be an actor in the movie and I pictured Sims, Buster, and Chester Casey being the same actor but just different with hair and make-up so that it doesn't give the ending away for the audience, if they having indulged themselves with this novel yet. This is my favorite Palahniuk book yet and I hope that the movie does it justice as so few movies do...Christ look at what they did to the graphic novel Wanted.

I think the 'film it like a docu' is so bleeding obvious. It would probably be truer to the book, but I've read the book and I don't want to see a film that I don't gain some new experience from. Instead I'd like to see it from the reporters view point, almost like a detective piecing it together, or maybe from Rants point of view from beyond the grave?

I think it would be best if a few of the characters were shown in a movie-esc format, like the car scenes and the him growing up. But mixed in would be interviews of some of the characters. Last thing i want to see is something like the office.

I loved Rant, second only to Survivor in my opinion. But it would be interesting to see how it does in theaters because its a very Palahniuk book, and by that i mean Batshit insane. For instance the whole incest/ time travel comes off very smoothly in book because your grow trust with the characters after getting the subtle hints they offer it just seems like thats where its heading. Without that going from car crashes to having sex with your mom on a frozen river might get a little, convoluted.

Personally i think the actor playing Rant shouldent be all that well known. Because i cant think of any good teenage-twenty year old actors that would fit the part. Thou i think Liam Nealson would be a perfect Green Taylor Simms,a nd the girl who is playing Silk Spectre in Watchmen would be a great...shit, forget the girls name.

Just my thoughts,
Disco

A musical...? A musical? Where do you spend your nights? No my friend that is not a good idea. A musical- Psh. Despite the fact that Chuck loves to take us down the road of grotesqueries, Rant has the potential to flow with class and style. Look at Fight Club, the book was amazing but not pretty, David Fincher brought his alluring esthetic to the picture and bam! Movie magic! Don't get me wrong Fight Club was dark but beautiful. Rant should emulate those same ideas.

I know the perfect song for when Buster Casey takes his last ride driving down the highway in flames: it would be Marilyn Manson's Just A Car Crash Away. It would be perfect! Picture Buster Casey driving down the highway in slow motion with the Christmas tree up in flames on top of the car and the helicopters are overhead videotaping the whole scene as it happens and the police are all following behind him. Then the scene swithes to him in the car smoking a cigarette like a bad ass and he flicks it out the window as he's flying down the highway right before he goes down in a fiery crash. Awesome!

I watched the movie LENNY with Dustin Hoffman as Lenny Bruce. While watching it I realized that RANT would work perfectly as a movie if it was done in that same kind of format-

YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE FLASHBACK OF INTERVIEWEES IN THE ROOM. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOLDEN GLOW ABOUT IRENE CASEY AND BUSTER, IT HAS TO BE SET IN RURAL NEBRASKE DUSTY AND GLOWING BRIGHT SORT OF NEW AGED FIFTIES WAY OF LIVINGIN WAY.

It'd be a mockumentary format obviously. With clips of Rant and his adventures with Echo and Shot. But the main focus would be on the interviewed witnesses. As for cast, totally new actors. New people. Because if someone famous played as Rant or someone who won some award in the past played as Echo, I seriously would not treat it as a documentary. It'd be like, "Hey there's that one chick from that one movie I saw last week." Cannot simply work with actors. The cast muct be fresh with new faces.

I dont know if i agree with the mockumentary film style...I think that style would eliminate most of the emotion of the movie...it would limit the visual aspects to shaky cam shots...I envisioned most of this book as sweeping shots...dark and brooding...it's an extremely visual story...it's hard to pin down how i see the story, but I'd almost turn the wallace boyer character from the opening scene into the man documenting the story...and him visiting all the different people to hear their story...so not necessarily the STYLE of the mockumentary but definitely some journalistic interview aspects...but in a more artistic fashion...the real turning point of the film would be neddy nelson's monologue/explanation of time travel...the part of the story that makes the journalist sit back and say "holy shit"...but by the time he realizes it, he's too late to talk to chester or simms...but maybe he watches simms drive away?...

i like the idea of portraying rant in a different light every time someone else tells the story...the reflection of how they saw him...

anyways that's all i got for now

hope it makes any sense haha

This book was definitely one of my favorite's, however it does not mix well with lsd. I was hospitalized because of the bad mix. anyways to the point, It would be good in a documentary style. A hardcore logo meets a waking life and natural born killers in a small hick town. with a momento flash back feel. chapter 15.... i dono if i can see some one capture that on film i really hope they take there time with this. It has high potential to be very good...i agree with coenman. id like to see new actors i dono hopefully they contact the fans lol.

They should definately do it in the form of a documentary. That's the only way it would work. I do hope that it comes out nicely. Rant is my second favorite palahniuk book right after Fight Club.
