The Shotgun Writing Intensives Are Now SOLD OUT!

Attention writers!  Lock and load, because it's time to prowl the wasteland of procrastination and start collecting scalps.  Translation:  It's time to get serious about your writing.  Here at The Cult, we do not rest until we're sure that every writer with potential that is reading this has taken that fateful plunge into improving their craft.  We're relentless in this endeavor; to make you all better writers and to hopefully, get you published.

What started this year with Chuck Palahniuk reading and reviewing 6 stories every month for an upcoming anthology, has just evolved into another beastly arm of The Cult's writers' workshop... this one belonging to badass scribe Craig Clevenger!

Yes, Clevenger returns to us all (thank God!) as the first visiting author for our new 'Authors in Residence' series.  This is different from previous Master Intensive Workshops, as it is not lecture and homework based, but more of a classroom creative writing course... a two week 'Shotgun' Intensive to focus on the material that you, the student, are working on.

Important: Craig is not going into this with a pre-arranged agenda.  Rather, he is going to accept two samples from all the students before the class actually begins.  Samples should be 2,000 - 3,000 words long and should be emailed to Mirka@chuckpalahniuk.net only after you have registered for the class.  Let me be clear:  This sample you send will not be used as part of any of the lessons in the actual class.  Rather, it is just a sample to let Craig see your range and style of writing.

To ensure personal attention and an intimate classroom style setting, both Shotgun Intensives will be limited to only 15 Students. But don't worry, there are two to choose from!  And you know what else?  Registration is now open!

July Class Is Now Sold Out!

September Class Is Now Sold Out

Furthermore, Craig wants you all to know exactly what you're in store for, so he has posted his Introduction for everyone to read beforehand.

Read Craig Clevenger's Introduction Here!

That link will also lead you into a preview of the actual forum set up, so you can see how the class will be arranged.  (*This preview will close once registration for the July class fills up.  Also, the preview is not open for comments, so please post any comments or questions in this news thread.)

Here are some more important details about both classes that Craig is hosting:

  • You are allowed to sign up for both!
  • Registration is open to everyone. It is not based on writing samples.
  • Writing samples must be submitted to Mirka within 24 hours of registration so I can forward them to Craig in a timely manner. mirka@chuckpalahniuk.net
  • What's the cost for this opportunity to study with Craig Clevenger for two weeks in this intimate and personal Shotgun Intensive:  It's only $250 with special discounts as always to our premium members.
*Premium members will receive a courtesy discount of $25.
  • There is also an additional 'Early Bird' discount of $25 for registrations from July 13 through July 15!

Lastly, remember to please post all questions you have about the classes here, and we will answer them in a timely manner.

Did you like this?

Could you give us more details about the writing sample submissions?

Do you still need them within 24 hours if I'm signed up for the September session? How do we go about submitting our samples? What exactly is Craig looking for in these samples? Does he want pieces of a project we're currently working on or writing that demonstrates our overall writing style/abilities? Word count limits?

Thank you and I am so EXCITED for this workshop!

Another writing sample question: Before, you had said we should submit two samples, each a maximum of 2000-3000 words in length. The way I read it now, it sounds like we just send one--is this correct?

Hello Everyone,

In our hurry to finalize the update in time, we did leave out important information. Since then, we have  updated the news post with:

Important: Craig is not going into this with a pre-arranged agenda.  Rather, he is going to accept two samples from all the students before the class actually begins.  Samples should be 2,000 - 3,000 words long and should be emailed to Mirka@chuckpalahniuk.net only after you have registered for the class.  Let me be clear:  This sample you send will not be used as part of any of the lessons of the actual class.  Rather, it is just a sample to let Craig see your range and style of writing.

So, yes, Gayle it is two samples. This is for the July class. The reason is for students to have an extra week to polish the actual work they want to workshop during the course. This is because this course starts so soon.

For the September class, this will be handled differently because of the extra time. We are going to ask that students send the 7000 words (chapters, stories, a mixture) that they plan to workshop a week before the start date.

Once registration for the September class fills up, I will send all the participants a detailed email about when and what to submit.

So if you are in the July class, please email me your two samples  (2000-3000 words each) to mirka@chuckpalahniuk.net

If you are in the September class, please wait for an email from me.

Thank you!

Mirka

Howdy! New guy here, only born minutes ago according to site records.

Quick question, any conflict if my samples are from the project I wish to workshop?

what a fantastic opportunity. i have a story i would love to work through this with, but with the wedding and honeymoon and plane tickets coming up, food and water and truck repair, money and credit has to be reserved. unfortunately, i have to leave spaces open for other members..

so congrats to all involved !!

just a tittle:

my woman came to me today with this one.. she checks e-entertainment at work when she gets bored. there's a section dedicated to celebrity tweets. like dr dre's latest twitter update, or what's up with mc hammar and the like. and the cult twitt re: this shotgun intensive was listed. she was pretty excited to tell me about it. just as i was pretty excited to tell meerk about it haha

I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, but the July Shotgun is not open for posting yet. Please post any questions or comments in this thread for now.

I deleted several posts, so I apologize if you are enrolled and will have to repost any information on Monday when the Intensive begins.

Thanks!

Oh, and it was not a "glitch" that people could post in the preview "only" forums. It was human error..mine.

It's fixed now.

I'm going to open the July Intensive for posting on Saturday. That way we all have the weekend to we can all get acquainted, and I can answer questions etc.

-That does not mean the class STARTS on Saturday. It starts on Monday, July 20th.

-If you are registered, but can't post until Monday, that's okay.

-Craig Clevenger will not be visiting the class until Monday.

If you haven't already, send me your samples, please!

It's going to be quite a ride. Smile

Check Palahniuk is writing some of the finest Check Lit out there. OMG, the one about the lonely Check who is torn between a paper and digital world? It's like Milan Kundera meets William Gibson!

Don't make me track you down, please.
