Chuck Palahniuk's April Essay: Objects
It's April 1st! Spring is on the horizon. I've got some bad news though, folks. Chuck decided not to do an essay for this month. He's too busy working on the new book. I'll just stop right there. That was a horrible attempt at an April Fool's Day prank. Wow, I think I'm getting old or something. No worries, the essay is here.
Chuck has comitted to 1 year of these, so expect 9 more yet for 2008. Also remember that, for the first month they are posted, these essays are only available to Premium Members. Basic Members can view them one month later. So come April 1st, this new essay will be available to all, free, for one month only.

this reminds me of april 1st, 2k4--has it been that long--when we were told [by a more believable admin] that chuck was too tired--with book tours and writing and traveling--and was sick of doing the essays so he wouldnt do them anymore. i for a few moments believed that one. then again, the essays were so new they still seemed unbelievable. or something.
this essay on objects reminded me of the tattoos in momento that first served as memories then served as his love for his wife, then as memories and back to representing his love for his dead wife.
"What was your last memory of?"
"My wife."
"Awwwe.."
"Dying."
"Oh."
priceless, perfect writing. the tats you see throughout the movie remind you of his devotions. the polariods do the same job, though not as personally, being non-carnal they dont elicit the same arousal of the heart, but they do a perfectly fine job of reminding.
great essay !

This essay, and the objects one from the first time around, are probably some of my favorite essays. I thought about important objects in movies for awhile. Probably, one of my favorites uses of objects in a movie ever was the wooden pickle in Bad Santa. So much emotion in that object. And then the emotion from that transfers to the stuffed elephant at the end...I could talk about this for days.
