What did you think of Damned? {Spoilers}
Well...what did you think?
As seems par for the course these days...it's not Chuck's best work (but what could ever compare with those first 5!). But I still liked it. Had me laughing out loud in several parts. It feels unfortunate that it had to be "to be continued"... but that's what he wanted.... I would have preferred to see Rant actually go on as the trilogy that I thought I'd read he had said...
Better than Snuff & Tell All (which I still espouse are the same book for all intents and purposes), but not on par with his better works.
What did you think?
I was amazed by Damned The to be continued was awesome. Even if it never gets resolved with a sequel, that's cool with me. What better way then to end the book with an annoying to be continued. The book included all sorts of little annoyances. Farting in elevators, toenail clippings, and the like. Some people complain that it is juvenile. Ummm, It was from the perspective of a juvenile.
Ouroburos, I totally agree with you - I would love to see Rant as a trilogy! That's definitely one of my favorites from Chuck.
I did like Damned.. I don't think it necessarily needs a continuation but I'm excited about it anyway. I was also laughing out loud during a bunch of scenes. Madison punching Hitler in the face? Amazing and hilarious! It amazes me how Chuck can cram so many themes into one story without making a big mess of the book. He continues to blow my mind & I look forward to whatever is next
If I can't be beautiful, I want to be invisible
I liked it. Some parts were a bit try-hard, sometimes he overdid the repetition and name-dropping, and the ending wasn't entirely satisfying, but overall it was an entertaining read, I got through it quickly and I am eager to see the next chapter. But it does pale in comparison to Rant and some of the others, although it's better than Snuff.
I was glad to see him not try to be shocking for the sake of it, and I'm giving him the benefit of doubt here, because the flipside is that he tried to be shocking and failed miserably.
i for the most part loved the book. it had me laughing at most parts and i felt as if i could not put the book down even to go to class. although i do have a big pet peeve with "to be continues". i would have liked to see the story finish out in one book but if Chuck plans to make a sequel or even a trilogy i will still read it
Just finished it. Loved it, I don't know what "best since rant" hype there was, but I'm on board, I had problems reading parts of the beginning, and some of the early parts that delt with a little girls sexuality were uncomforatable, and it had a whole lot of potential to be great, and just as much to be terrible, but I love chuck so I soldiered through. I am super happy I did, its almost a caricature of a chuck novel, its literally the lost and forgotten people of history going through hell looking for some sort of redemption or meaning. Or did I miss the point?
Ramdom thoughts:
Thought the book was ordinary at best. Another let down. Palahniuk has set a standard for himself it seems he isn't even trying to live up to.
Most of his stories are a bit silly but this one took the silliness to the extreme and without even having a decent plot to help it out.
Repetition has been used in all Palahniuk's books but it's time for him to give it a rest. That technique is just tiresome and irritating now.
The effort he went through to explain that a 13 year old girl is highly intelligent for her age just so he can write in the exact same voice he always writes in was very frustrating.
People talk about how he's been experimenting with his last few books. If he has, the experiments aren't working and he's experimenting in the wrong areas.
The 'to be continued...' ending is a huge disappointment. There's no way this story is good enough to warrant another two books.
Palahniuk's last few books feel like reading work by a Palahniuk copycat who doesn't have the ability/is too lazy to match Palahniuk himself.
I'd like Palahniuk to take a step back and make an attempt at doing something entirely different. Tell a serious story, drop the repetition, use a different voice and tone the sarcasm down.
I spoke to Chuck on his book tour, and asked about Rant being a trilogy, and he said, "If I can find something better than the oral biography format. If I can't think of it I probably won't ever write it." I am paraphrasing here, but it seems to me like he has moved on from furthering Rant's narrative. Which is sad because it was my favorite book. Damned was good. Not great, but good. Much better than Tell-All, Snuff, or Diary in my opinion, which are my least favorites.
Plug me in and turn me on
I always figured the whole trilogy talk was just that.
That's all I'll say on that for now.
This is why we can't have nice things.
If Damned gets a sequel... or becomes a trilogy...
and not Rant...
I'm sorry, but NO!
this news fucking blows to be honest.
Damned was ok, but nothing spectacular
and no way does it deserve a sequel or trilogy
Rant is a 1,000,000x better than Damned
Aww, man... totally gutted.
That's pretty sad to hear.
Rant doesn't have to be another oral biography... write it in a more traditional way and I'd still be interested in reading it.
Uber sad face...

If no Rant, then I rather Chuck write something completely new.
Lullaby is more deserving of a sequel than Damned honestly.
Everybody get on the disco bus
I really loved this book. I found it hard to put down and am a little shocked that it did not go over as well with other readers. To each their own, I guess.
I thought Damned was way better than Rant and I seriously hope we're not left hanging on to a "to be continued" for very long. Whether its one more book or a trilogy, I'm eager to read the rest of the story.
Interesting, I rather liked this book. I did think it was the best since Rant but I guess what is that saying? The book was sophomoric but it had me cracking up and it surely had a more likely version of hell than the Bible does.

I actually struggled through the first half, as I did with Snuff and Tell-All, then things kinda started falling into place and it became mildly enjoyable. But not at all the "best book since Rant" hype.
