Honestly I didn't like the book....seemed way too predictable and the characters were all flat. I do however like that Chuck is trying out all of these different writing styles and who doesn't think this new public persona is funny as hell?

Dr. Suglia is at it again, people. You can always count on 'ol Joe.

Amazon review: http://www.amazon.com/review/RDOXYUDDAJKBZ/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN...

By the way, this is what happens when an author isn't given the deal or the movie offers that another author has gotten. It's too bad Joe's sense of entitlement hasn't yielded him any dollar signs.

Dr. Joseph Suglia says:
"Being taught how to write fiction by Chuck Palahniuk is exactly like being taught how to play football by a one-legged man."

That said, his review seems honest. He obviously read the book and obviously didn't like what he saw. I'll still probably check it out at some point, since I'm a fan of moron fiction (I guess?).

But there's a difference between reading something with an open mind and finding out that you hate it, or like Suglia, hating something (or in this case, someone) before you've even read one word.

As a customer, perhaps I could understand this, but this guy is an author and "literary authority," as he'd like to say. It's not really the review that bugs me so much as its intent. That, and the fact that he goes out of his way to do them (because this is definitely not the first time). I can't respect a guy like that. It's childish and he needs to move on.

This, coupled with his "fuck the reader" and "I'm the greatest" attitude is part the reason he can't land a big publishing house and his movie tanked. He doesn't have to be nice or a decent human being, but not going out of his way to be an asshole might help. Just sayin'.

Here's the rub: there are plenty of people that hate Suglia so much that they'll actually buy this novel in spite of him. In actuality, he's probably doing Chuck a favor.

Like Brandon said, his intent is pretty obvious. He clearly has something against Chuck. I understand that you don't have to like all authors or all of an author's books, but look at all of his reviews. http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/AKP3K6EBNDGCJ/ref=cm_pdp_rev...

I mean this dude one-stars Survivor, Fight Club and Choke? Even if you don't like Chuck's style, those books are easily better than one star.

Hell, I would argue that Fight Club deserves at least 4 stars just for getting a lot of young people interested in reading.

If you simply don't like someone for whatever reason, at least be honest about it and say "I'm one-staring this book because I hate Chuck". I would at least respect that.

This Dr. Joseph Sugglia is such a pompous douche. He is so full of himself and makes it known every chance he gets. He is the self-proclaimed "greatest author in the world."

Here's an interview in which he showcases himself : http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewarticle.asp?AuthorID=57040

Well, "I'm one-starring this book so you'll pay attention to me and possibly buy my book so I feel less commercially inferior" would be more accurate... a lot of people have said they enjoyed Watch Out, so I might check it out one of these days if I can find a free copy.

This is the blowhard that wrote the book about someone going after Britney Spears? I ran across some of his self-congratulatory advertisements years ago and was turned off so fast I almost had whiplash.

Sure, I'm enjoying it. It's candy, like most of Chuck Palahniuk's books. Will I remember it two weeks, a month from now? Hell, I'll be surprised if I remember it when I reach the last line. It's kind of weird that someone who has had such an influence on my worldview (with Fight Club) has failed almost completely to impact me since. Pygmy did show some promise of a return to a nearly-vanished form, but let's be honest, he'll never write anything with a tenth of the punch, prescience, or relentless turns of phrase of his first published work. All we're doing now is enjoying the reams of cotton candy.

I don't.

Chuck Palahniuk is clearly a talented writer, it's just too bad most of his books aren't really worth reading.

Say what you want about Suglia and his apparent hatred of Palahniuk, but he writes some clever and entertaining reviews. He seems very much to be pushing his own agenda, but you can't hate a guy for trying.

I might check out one of his books now. His reviews really are clever.

I realize you guys talked about this about a month ago. But that's so true. If you open a book thinking your not going to like it, your not. If you plan on liking it you will. It's all about having an open mind leaving it up to the last page. It's douche-bags like Suglia that are the reason our culture is fucked. Close minded dick heads who think everything they do is beyond brilliance. I think I am in fact going to read this book though. We'll see if this brilliance he speaks of is really there.

I rather enjoyed Tell-All.

I read this book off the back of a 700 page collection of Asimov stories. I had spent a week or more plodding through Asimov, and whilst I love the man's work, sometimes it felt quite taxing to read. Compared to that, Tell-All was like a good comedy sketch show. It was over before I knew it but I was laughing all the way through.

I realize that this topic is old but i stumbled across this yesterday--This Suglia guy seemed to have struck a nerve around here:

First of all, I found his reviews entertaining. I didn't agree with much of what was said but was entertained--especially by the self-absorbed PhD speak (but i have a feeling that some of it was done with a thesaurus). And I thought he had a couple of thought provoking opinions--I don't happen to agree with them but, on some levels, I thought they were valid.

But the two glaring things that caught my attention were:

Well, that's my two cents.

I also don't understand why he posts his reviews on Amazon as opposed to, say, his official website: http://www.josephsuglia.com/

The thing is certainly lacking content, but maybe it's because he knows he's going to be that first one-star review, and it's going to be so well-written (as well-written as Amazon reviews go) that it's going to garnish him some attention.

The intent of the review is clear, IMO: hatchet job.

He's reviewed every-single-book this way, so it's apparent to me that he's going into each one under the pretense of ripping it rather than enjoying it. I guess when someone is more successful than you, you either learn from them or call them your enemy, but Joe seems to want more than that. Almost as if he's waiting for Chuck to respond to his taunts (which he never will), as if this kind of conflict furthers his reputation of being some kind of "bad boy of literature."

Suglia overshot that a long time ago. He's just an asshole.

Sorry to paraphrase but I thought it would save space.
I absolutely agree with everything you said. He is obviously baiting Chuck (along with all the other people he rated with a single star) to steal credibility.

Again, I don't want to sound like a snob, but this major author is writing reviews without any kind of compensation for Amazon. This, coupled with the fact that he is blatantly bashing other authors, makes him a joke.

Yes he's an asshole but he reminds me of Harold Bloom--he pulls out minute details and creates Oliver Stone type controversies around them (I'm comparing him to Bloom in stylel; not in talent). While much of it is absurd it's still entertaining to read.

Well, I wouldn't call him a major author. He's on a pretty small press with a modest sales record. The guy still has to teach to make ends meet.

Who cares what that asshole said? If he didn't read it, and is obviously bating authors, I won't even read what he has to say.

However, I do have to say that, when I read this, I was horrifically disappointed. And no, I did not plan to be.
