Ozymandias, however, was plenty civil in his response and perhaps at the risk of trying to feign personal attacks in here, I would just like to respectfully share my utmost humble opinion in that he was jumped on so quick, simply as a casualty. As a regular member of such a wonderful community bred and governed by a super fly administration, my only intention in here is to voice my concern for letting hurt feelings coincide with honest feedback from the community, especially on levels of profession. You can't deny Ozy was a valuable contributor to this place, especially in the politics forum and I ask respectfully you please consider he was merely voicing discomfort regarding a community issue on a fairly reasonable level. Suspending members, banning members, no, the community won't be consulted.

So I suggest, when it doubt, play it safe, and you (one) should be fine.

But what is the definition of "safe"? I'm not trying to stir the pot here, but if you feel passionately about something, be it politics or the interaction between two members on the Cult, and you feel the need to voice this opinion (participate in our community), how are we to know where the line is? It just doesn't seem like a fixed mark.

I'm not saying this to jump on any bandwagons, just that it would help in future cases if some kind of system was implemented. An ignore button, some kind of plainly visible warning system (ie yellowcards), anything. Otherwise these situations run the risk of feeling arbitrary. There have been worse names thrown at people by members who still have active accounts, and while I'm sure these things are looked at on a case-by-case basis, it still sends the wrong message if certain people can do/say things with no recrimination while others have to wonder what's "safe".

I only bring it up because this has happened in the past with other member bannings as well, and it just tends to suck all around for the community. Admin is never an easy position to hold, and obviously in this case you did what you felt you had to do, and really, reversing your decision wouldn't make your job any easier.

I'm just wondering if there's a way things can seem less arbitrary, a little less smoke and mirrors. A permanent ban is a pretty big step to take with any member who's been on a site longer than a year with posts in the thousands, or conversely, a newbie who probably doesn't realize whom he's throwing snarky comments at.

I hate the whole situation because I really do like everyone involved on all sides of the argument(s), admin, mod, and User, and enjoy seeing what they have to say, but I'm just getting nervous that our community (the one we've all built over the last few years) is eroding.

We are normally pretty lenient when it comes to permabans. In fact, if you ask me, we are way too easy going. Someone like Six got a lot of chances because she had been here a long time. But at some point, we need to be able to say "enough is enough". She knows the established rules, and was often times the first person to let us know someone else was breaking them when it fit her agenda.

Sometimes, there is someone who is brand new and such a complete asshole that they basically get an immediate permaban. It has to happen. If you haven't earned any respect there is no reason you should be treated with any.

Obviously we can't make published rules that address both of those people and everyone in between with outright clarity. We are not even going to try. But we do have a base set of guidelines that we use to make our decisions.

When it comes to the point where someone is going to get banned, we discuss it in the Admin forum. Yes, we have a forum that is full of threads whose titles are just member names. When certain members have multiple threads in there, or threads that are multiple pages long, clearly we need to make an actual decision. 95% of the time, during the discussion we decide that someone is just misunderstood and let it fly. The other 5% of the time is actual temp and permabans.

We document all this stuff so if need be, we can go back in there and say "this person has done X Y and Z over the last 6 months, we need to do something".

You guys don't make running this site easy and though I agree with you Monkey, that I don't want to see the community erode, sometimes people need to come to the realization that perhaps they don't belong here anymore. That isn't to say they are bad people, but maybe they just need a new place to hang out that is more inline with the person they have become.

A yellowcard system is an interesting one, but let's be honest, that wouldn't do a damn bit of good. Because then we would have to make public arguments about someone was carded, then an argument about why they were banned. The fact is, old-timers who get banned have been warned many time personally via PM or email, if they choose to continue acting like a fool, it's their fault if they are banned.

I have to be honest with you, I have never belonged to a site that requires as much moderation (particularly of old timers) as this one does. I frequent several other boards that have next to no drama at all and I don't think I have seen on any of them a public thread that addressed a member being banned. If anything, that is our fault because it seems that people think that having been here a long time gives them the right to behave however they choose.

If certain people could just stop being consistent irritants, we wouldn't have to have these discussions. If you want to act like a non-stop asshole, go to 4chan. If you've been warned by mods/admins more than once, perhaps you need to consider the way you act.

Ironically, these also tend to be the people who email me asking me to delete all their old posts because they are now looking for a job and don't like all the stuff that comes up next to their name in a google search.

She didn't call her a whore. She posted a stupid picture from a stupid movie that had the word whore on it. Of course she could have found a picture without that word, but had you seen the movie you'd realize it wasn't even meant in a rude way! It was a phrase. A silly little phrase one friend said to the other in a dismissive way to say "Whatever." It's the exact same thing when one friend says the other friend sucks because they can't do something together.

I'm not going to lie, it bothers me when someone tells me "You suck" in the instance you mentioned. Most of the time it's because I have other plans but mostly it's work. I know they don't really mean it, but it irks me because it sounds like they're blaming me for ruining their plans. I've actually told a few people not to say that to me. I don't care if they say "it sucks" but I do when people say "you suck".

Actually, in the movie, one character calls the other a whore dismissively, and the other character feels she's being accusatory and out of line. Seems like the exact same situation we're dealing with here, no?

Six had way, way too many chances, I see that now, and Mirka has made the right call, even if you feel her reasoning for doing it in this instance was unduly harsh.

I always add a cute giggle and an "I love you" on the end because I want them to know I'm kidding.

Next time a cop pulls you over - call him a whore in a dismissive tone and see if he understands.
