Honesty: I think the knowledge that this was going to piss me off should have been enough to let it slide. I don't mean to say I think myself holy, what I mean is that this situation really, really is just that insignificant. It wasn't worth the paper work.
This is my favorite part of this whole thread.
I think Nightrious deserves a blowjob.
I think what's being forgot is that this isn't just one event that brought this on.
When there's 10-20 consecutive people joining and saying the same thing, a pattern starts to emerge.

I'm trying not to exacerbate the image of an effeminate and wussy man. Let alone put it straight into queerdom.
Only teasing, man.

Pfft! I know that Phil! Believe it or not, I too know how to tease!
I miss the old cult. The "Fight Club" cult. It's our fault for sticking around i guess.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
"Oh, I'm sorry, I was taking life seriously."
I'm gone for ONE solid 12 hr block and come back to THIS?
What Nightrious said.
Also, we need to put Fano on suicide watch, stat.
Deserve's got nothing to do with it. Mricpx says she's been hostile to more than new members--who the fuck hasn't? You can't convince me this ban was just without convincing me that half of this forum should be banned.
Chat logs are being read through, Six is banned for an undefinable amount of time, and what's worse is that she has to come back to a place she made home seven years ago and feel like a black sheep at the dinner table. I went to bed with a WHOLE CHICKEN and woke up with a GIANT ORANGE COCK in my ass.
All this over a fucking newb? It's disappointing, pathetic, and... can nobody weigh anything? Instead of admins banning people or not banning people and wasting their time thinking on it, more often than not forcing a ban and then revoking it, sometimes apologizing for it, can't it just be learned that this isn't a wall, that you aren't holding a gun, that nobody is going to seize the fort if you let shit that doesn't matter slide? Can nobody sit the fact of a newb's hurt feelings on one side of a scale and the act of banning a longtime member of the community, starting a thread that will inevitably be filled with drama, and invading the privacy of pseudo 'private' messages, on the other side of that scale, and just take a step back, look at the fucking scale, and realize that the world won't implode if shit that isn't the slightest bit significant is simply left alone?
Not to mention that if you felt you absolutely had to make some action to rectify this newb's hurt feelings, you could have went with a one week ban and called it a day. This is a community, right? This is certainly a community specific incident. What I'm trying to say is that despite the rules, the guidelines (which by the way, the newb in question unknowingly made a bannable offense by posting PMs, and you won't ban her for it, so don't get technical on me as I stray from the technical here), this, being a community, I feel the most important things to take into consideration are the effects directly related to each individual--the time Mirka wasted is tragic, the fact that I'm pissed and making this post is ridiculous, the fact of Six finding a place in chat to waste time and then losing it-- these things are as important as the newb's hurt feelings.
Honesty: I think the knowledge that this was going to piss me off should have been enough to let it slide. I don't mean to say I think myself holy, what I mean is that this situation really, really is just that insignificant. It wasn't worth the paper work.
Saskatchewan is so flat and vacant, you can see the curvature of the earth--you can stand on a two by four and see the back of your head--but you couldn't fit all of this bullshit in there.
Like always, Dan, I love reading everything you post. Everything. This was no exception. I respect your passion and vigor. Unfortunately, like you stated, it is ridiculous you've wasted time in making this post. You only know parts of what's happened. Only parts you've been shared with by one side. The fact that the other person involved in this incident is a newb doesn't make this issue any less significant, despite what you think.

O:
Interesting development in cultdom.
Rules are rules and mods are mods, and as such, I love and respect you all!
But in my tiny exercise of free speech, this is a fucking disgrace.

Nightrious, you of all people, should know this isn't a one-time offense. At some point the staff has to draw a line.
I had to go through a hell of a lot of chat logs to see what was going on, then a handful of threads. I found no evidence that Six was provoked, if she wanted to provide that we would be happy to take it into consideration. Instead, like in the past, all we could find was her acting like she runs the place.
What else would you propose we do, when multiple mods/admins are contacted by multiple members regarding the acts of one particular person? Do we need some sort of slide-rule that lets us divide the offense by the time they have been here? Do we send you an email to find out if the person has been here too long to be banned? We have rules that are in place for everyone, not just newbs.
What would your opinion be if the person wasn't Six, but instead a new member? I suspect you would be fine with a ban in that instance. In fact, we ban new members pretty quickly. The fact that Six has been given so many warnings proves that we are taking her place in the community into consideration.
It's none of my business, but is there anything that suggests the crackdowns on posting and behavior this past year or two have increased membership and/or workshop activity?! I mean, someone owns this site, pays the bills, and can pretty much do whatever the hell they want to make it work, and if being heavily moderated makes the site more profitable, then fine, but at the very least I would hope if it DOESN'T show to be beneficial to the bottom-line, we could maybe lighten up a bit?!
I mean my hope is that there's a real fiscal reason why we can't swear in shoutbox or post parody threads or give someone shit, otherwise it just doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever...

Six was telling sexydeathsoda to "Stop it" repeatedly in chat because of me. Because Erin was taking PMs, editing them, and sending them to another cultie through AIM.
I told Six what was happening. That is how she was provoked. The fact that one of the reasons she was banned was because she was taking up for me makes me wish I was banned too. She told her to "stop it" because I was hurt and offended that a person who had been here less than a week was lying about me, AFTER I told them to stick around, meet new people, and have fun.
I'm curious, by the way. How is telling a newb to "stop it" more unwarranted than telling a newb there should be a bag of dicks in their pictures?
You fools, you think she was banned? WRONG! She's dead, it's all part of the plot.
RIP six, you will be missed.
btw

I don't think anyone said that, I think what they were saying was that they were surprised Six hadn't photoshopped in pictures of dicks.

I know this is kind of nit-picky and all but it was a direct quote from six's post when she said 'this is as close to a complement as I get', then bloodsugar says to take her word for it.

Yeah, but Six didn't say it, another member did. Six wasn't the only person throwing out insults to this girl.
It's not like we're going to lose track of her. She's just not here for a while. Decisions were made, can't be unmade. SIx is doing fine and she'll be back. Nothing to be done about it now.
Yeah.
This thread has taken an interesting turn.
Writer: In my original post I said that that this was a pattern, see my use of the term "repeated" when I explain why six is banned. (I am not sure that you pointing fingers at everyone else that you consider should be banned really serves your point by the way.)
Moon: We're aspiring for a different level of discourse, yes, and it's not mercenary at all; we simply want people to feel welcome. The cussing and such rules are because Chuck has a lot of young fans and we don't want the site blocked by parents or schools.
Tourist: We'll post threads when a member's absence will be noticed, fair enough?
this site was blocked by my high school. Just sayin'.

Brentinlouis Wrote: What was that rule about being intentionally annoying?
Six is who I wanna be when I grow up. And if that makes me f-ed up I'm alright witih that. You gotta do what you gotta do.
This site was blocked by my high school in 2003. Why is it suddenly so important?
I don't mean this sarcastically. I am genuinely curious. And I'm curious as to why the swearing rule is often so arbitrary.
There is hope, but not for us.
I would imagine just some of the topics and side things he talk about in his books is what would keep this site blocked at schools. Probably having Cult all over doesn't help either.
Plus, kids shouldn't be on here while they're at school! They should be learning or listening to the president or something. They can goof off here when they get home from school or go off to college.
These incidents always bring out the bad side of some people.

I'm just going to make one comment here, so you all understand something as there seems to be some confusion.
When someone reports stuff like this to us, the "transcripts" we review are not the ones they send us in a PM. We review the actual transcripts as they appear in our database. This allows us to be sure that what we are being told is not edited.
It's time consuming, and we don't like doing it, but it is fair.
I find it ironic that the site is being made "friendlier" and "welcoming" by cutting the inmaturity level so that highschoolers can join.
No wonder newbs are banned left and right. I am sure this same problem doesn't occur at The Velvet.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
No wonder newbs are banned left and right. I am sure this same problem doesn't occur at The Velvet.
Dude, I appreciate what you're getting at, I assure you, but please, let's not get into this. It's not one website's duty to investigate the other, and vice versa. Let's please keep the discussion to what is and is not appropriate on this forum. I don't think we need to bring another forum into it. The Velvet is a different place altogether, with a different base, different issues, and different needs, and the last thing we need is an inter-forum war.
As a dedicated Velveteer and also as a longtime Cultie, the last thing I want is for a regular of either place to get the impression that the other isn't for them.

that's the kindest STFU i have ever gotten. Thank you.
So...We are still going to die. Right?

A month? For giving new members shit? That's fucking ridiculous.
most people who come here dont join, though most of those people who do not join do come here regularly. looking up chuck through his site. unless the site is blocked in their school or at their work. goo. gle is an incredible filter. it can and does even basically punish sites for criteria well beyond my scope.
a few years ago, this site was blocked at my work. it hasnt been blocked this whole year. and the software and service, none of it changed; this site did.
i mean, chuck has hit in the top ten to four of the hundred best sellers list for the past three or four years now. that's impressive. it's an injustice to him and his work to limit the medium of that kind of traffic, the kind of traffic that makes the difference. (and.. anyone who can get kids to read--and adults to read--deserves every outlet at their disposal.)
this is a fan site. chuck doesnt post here but once in a great while, and only for advisement in the workshop. but the rules were put in place for his work, for all that he's done, for all that he does. he wants to have a number one selling book. that is a goal that he has gotten close to a number of times. it would suck if this site, his official "fan" site, inhibited him from reaching that obtainable goal..
yeah, something like that

I don't understand why a man who writes books about porn stars getting fucked to death is supposed to be catering to people who can only use the website from work or from school.
There is hope, but not for us.
I was about to ask the same thing. Doesn't his subject matter be the main reason he is not #1?

i absolutely love horror slasher films. but i dont wanna be walking down the street and seeing some woman slashed to pieces of pulp and mess.

Okay um. That...what? I don't want to see people fucked to death, either. What in the world does that have to do with the target audience of the website/the novel?
There is hope, but not for us.
Jkabol, when I very first started here, i went on and on about chuck palahniuk, lullaby, and all the other ones I had read. That was sort of the point, because this site is about chuck. You were one of the members who was cool with that, and discussed chuck with me, and I still see you do that with just about every new member that starts a welcome thread today. I think that's really great. As I grew here at the cult, it was people like six and everyone else that made me realize what made the cult so great was the fact that people here talked about Waaaaaay more than just chuck stuff. And thank god! I have always been a proponent of being nice to people in general, and I do know that extensive research was done for this ban, and I'm not against it really, (yes it makes me sad that she's gone for a time, but hey, if she deserved it, she deserved it...)
BUT what I'm getting at is that the teasing and the 'omg is he seriously still talking about Chuck stuff?' is what made me stay here so long and like it so much. A lot of the newer members, whether they be dumb young kids who just read their first palahniuk and feel so rebellious and hard core, or if they're older and just want to come here for writting, or chatting, or WHATEVER! I'm just saying that realizing the other aspects of the cult is a good thing. If the cult was just a bunch of teens talking about how rad fight club was, we probably wouldn't be here.
so, it's fine she got banned. she'll be back. but a lot of newbs can be annoying. but that doesn't mean you can be mean to them. So you guys were right. i just wanted to say that. Blah! too much typing.

Brentinlouis Wrote: What was that rule about being intentionally annoying?
I hate that I'm a new kid.
B
hey, don't. Everyone was at sometime! that's what counts. Sticking out the rough times, making a name for yourself, and earning respect from others. That's what separates dumb newbs who whine that someone was mean to them ( but no one should be outlandishly mean to someone else just because they're new,) and the ones that say, you know, if I want to be a part of this community I probably need to just keep trying and be myself.
Hell, I still don't make the heavenly list of 'cult members to admire' That goes all the way back to 2003!

Brentinlouis Wrote: What was that rule about being intentionally annoying?
I feel bad for people who have to do "extensive research" for a ban. I hope the money is good. If it's for free that would be what i call dedication!
So...We are still going to die. Right?
I still say these rotten kids shouldn't be wasting time here or anywhere online while they're at school.
It has nothing to do with the content of his books, this site is about encouraging others to read and write.
