about the forums.
just a suggestion, but u should ditch these forums. i recomend vbulletin. this format seems sort of inaccessible. there should be a better way of tracking new posts, i think it would bring more people to the boards if the conversation flowed a little better. the only redeemable thing about this board is the shoutbox. Please some one look into a different style of forums, it will be worth it trust me. there are a lot of people online, but no one posts very often. better board, better experience.

This has been discussed to death. We used to have vBulletin, but now we don't, and it's a pity, but the community has stayed strong regardless.

is it the cost? the community may be strong, but it could be so much happier.

I never really utilized all the old vbulletin stuff when we did have it. Hell, I don't think I found out about how you could click the little thing and go directly to the newest post until the last year we had it. I used to always just hit "Last Page" and scroll down.
The point I'm trying to ask about is, was there a more efficient way of tracking new posts back then? I still track new posts the same way I always have; by just clicking the "New Posts" button. It lines em up fine, with the latest thread that's been posted in right there at the top, and gives you all the different sub-forums that have been posted in all on one page so you don't have to visit General Discussion and then go check the Movies forums to see what's new. They're all just right there.
Maybe that's only good for someone that visits once a day so they can be kept up on? I can see it getting a little overwhelming if you only visit 2-3 times a week.
And let me just add this, even with all the birth pains, I think this drupal thing is the way for this forum to have gone. Just gives it a more unique and professional look to it, to me. I still miss the multi-quote function and being able to search through every persons individual posts (up to 500 posts back). But we've gotten so many of all the other features back, that those are just really minor annoyances.
The only thing that really damns drupal from being a fine forum is the search function. Absolutely worthless! No one can even find it for one thing. For another, unless you have a very specific, exactly worded phrase you can pretty much forget about ever finding what you're looking for, or if it is listed, it's #137, after a page and a half of nothing whatsoever to do with the phrase you put in.
Really, the search function is the only thing I can see that was a tremendous improvement in vBulletin over where we are now.

Nope, there wasn't. It may look a tad different, but it is the same functionality as before... Actually, it is expanded functionality because it lets you see recent posts in area outside of the forum. For instance News posts, blogs, image comments etc. I can technically put anything in there, including workshop submissions but I keep those out to avoid confusion.

You're right, it is a feature that is useful for an every-day user. If you stop by weekly, it is far easier to jump into a specific forum.
being able to search through every persons individual posts (up to 500 posts back).
Go to a user's profile page, click the "Track" tab, it gives a list of all the posts the user has made.

I partially agree with you on this. We actually don't use Drupal's search function anymore, we use an embedded Google search. The drawback of a VB search is, yet again, it could only search the forum, we can now search the entire site.
I actually paid a lot of attention to when we switched to Drupal to power the site, and you guys were only using the site search around 20 times a month. It simply wasn't worth the resources of maintaining our own search engine (as you may not know, running search on a site as large as ours takes a lot of server power) so we decided to off-load that to Google because everyone knows all the fancy Google tricks. Maybe you need to learn some of them? I never have a problem finding what I'm looking for. My point is, even the sites I visit that use VB still have poor search results once they get to a large enough size.
There will be some HUGE improvements around here in a few months. Stuff I've wanted to do for a while, but couldn't because I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the anthology. I think once that happens, you'll be pretty impressed.

As far as I've seen, it tracks each thread a user visits/views. Not each post they've made.
That's all I've sen too. It lists each person's thread they've started as a "post." Everything after that is just a reply.
Is there a way to search for each "reply" a person makes maybe?

This shows me all the threads you have posted in. Once I get in the new stuff I want, we'll show the actual post on this page as well. I can't do it now because it is too resource intensive, but the update will have new tools that make it something that can actually be done.
As an admin, I also have the ability to see every page you visit. Which is how we catch workshop cheats
I posted about being able to get into the workshop intensives that one time, so that's my excuse for it showing me as having visited every single page in them!
how does someone cheat the workshop?
I'm not nitpicking...well, I kind of am, but, just being technical about things.
The best way to find a specific post by a user, is Googling the username, keyword, and setting the date in the advanced search, with this site as the insite URL.
It still takes a fucking hotdamned long time to sift through things, but it's more accurate and navigable than using the Track function, which to me, is essentially useless for the average Culter.
ditto
Took the question right out of my mouth. How, and for what purpose?
There is hope, but not for us.
Point padding.
When someone looks at a sub for the first time, then immediately comments on it, I know without a doubt that they didn't actually read it. This doesn't happen often, mind you.
i cant wait for the new changes. i wasnt implying that you werent doing a good job. i was just curious what everyone else thought. im sure ill get used to these boards, love the shoutbox tho.
