Disapointed by choke?
I saw choke in theaters last night... I was extremely excited to see it the first night, i had also re-read the book and bought Rant the week before.
I feel as though Choke the movie was stolen from me in a way, because That was what I expected, not what I saw. I understand the movie needs to be adapted for film, but what the fuck, the ending for the book was THE BEST part of the book, and the movie didn't even use it, instead they ruined it with some bullshit on a plane.
I am very disapointed with that movie, because it is such a great book.
You are unjustified. Totally, righteously unjustified. Poles are reversing. And it's all your fault.
I'm saying I expected a better movie.
I probably wouldn't have seen it if I knew the ending was so fucked
I don't care what anyone says. 10 dollars is a bargain for the opportunity to choke someone.
I would let someone choke me for free.
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
I would pay ten dollars to choke someone.
maybe only during sex, but I wouldn't pay 10 dollars
Sexchoking is free. I'm talking about man-on-the-street choking.
I wish the movie was better
Let me get out my planner and let's work this shit out, then.
Happy birthday!
thanks for sharing.blackhawk tactical pants.

the ending for fight club was different than the book too.

to answer your question, yes.
I completely agree with you. Very accurate and concise review.
this thread was funny till dead guy said something

Yeah, I saw it opening day.
I was so excited... and then I felt so let down.
Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, Chuck is my favorite author, and Choke is one of my favorite books... and it all just disapointed.
You're completely right. The ending is one of the best endings ever. And, it was butchered.
The movie is never as good as the book though. So, my expectations weren't tooooo incredibly high.
I'm glad someone agrees.
Oh God, how I miss her...
I thought it was an ok movie and a very bad adaptation of the book.

Its the experiences you have and the knowledge you learn.
I watched the film and I realy enjoyed it till it got to the end and it just stoped, the point of the book is that it builds to that big ending and the film just missues that.
Yes. Very.
It turned me on.
I saw it with two of my friends who never read the book...I thought it was decent my friends didn't think to much of it they just kinda blew it off soon as we left the theater. I wish the true ending was intact but I didn't mind it that much. Clark Greg was funny as Charlie. I thought they nailed the rape scene. The thing I hated the most was the flashbacks and victor's mother...just felt off.

I was going to buy it,
but if I'm going to be disappointed..
I think I might just steal it.
"Avoid the world, it's just a lot of dust and drag and means nothing in the end."
I think that i would have liked the movie a bit more if I hadn`t had read the book before seeing it. And if I hadn`t read the book I would be very hyped with the movie, and trying to get a lot of people watching it.
(But I don`t think that It will be released here on theaters)
And I still picture a Slutty Jeniffer Conelly as Dr. Marshall, that girl did not make the trick on me
Sam Rockwell is ok
And to be honest, The end of the movie left me with a sort of happy feel, even if I didn`t totally enjoyed it
These actors all graduated from The Sandra Bullock School of Acting.
It's late when it's early later.
I like the actress who played Dr. Marshall... She was good in No Country for Old Men too.
Did anyone else hate the lady who played victors mother?

It all makes sense if you read Chuck's interview in Filter. He talks about wanting the film to be light, a romantic comedy. That makes me feel eight gabillion times better about not liking the film. Had I seen this movie without being in love with the author's writing style, I never would have felt such disappointment. Knowing the movie wasn't intended to have the dark edge of the novel is a relief for sure. The link for the interview is on here...

Um, Anjelica Huston? She's only Morticia Addams from The Addams Family. Possibly the best casting job for the film was her, had the film been made to be exactly like the book, which it appears it was not, so I guess she was not a good choice, as it stands.

Frankly, I think the casting was all wrong, with the exception of Sam Rockwell as Victor. Clark Gregg, I think, misinterpretted the idea behind the film and adapted it to be comedic in a way that everyone would understand, whereas Chuck uses a darker type of humor to get his point across. Personally, I hope someone else comes along and films it again.
“Those who argue that art and philosophy are proof of human worth neglect to mention that, in the scheme we have devised, artists and philosophers are powerless and largely without prestige. Art, music, and philosophy are merely poignant examples of what we might have been had not the priests and traders gotten hold of us.” - George Carlin
I just watched the film again. I gotta say even though the true ending is not intact I love the song by Radiohead at the end.

I merely see adaptations as someone elses interpretation of the novel. Some things work well in novels that do not work on screen, and vica versa.
Regardless though, loved choke as a novel, was disappointed by the film. The book moved me and I just loved the characters and the build up of the story along with the plot twists.
The film just did not affect me as much as the book did.
i loved the book, it might be my favorite cp book. i never laughed so hard and became so indulged in a book before choke. and this movie actually made me mad. idk i hope survivor doesnt get fucked up too...

Well, one thing I would've liked in this movie, and I know it would be a facsimile of Fight Club, to make small montage of the world he victor lives in, like when he comes into the sex addict support group, there's not enough detail. Chapter two of Choke was one of the funniest chapters in any book I've read, and that part of the movie ended up being flat, totally ignoring the funniest part of the novel. These same montage would've come in handy with the "circuit" stuff, a little assemble of all the different aircraft bathrooms and some of their 'specifics'. The point would be to put rythm, not like Fight Club, but rather, like any CP book, the rythm in the Fight Club movie was a byproduct of the book. It was in style with CP's writing style, and I think Choke would've been even more interesting if they added that.
I hated that they left out the prostitute of the mind.
I found it weird that they cut out the true ending. On the DVD, you can actually watch it. Although, it does have two differences from the book. Paige doesn,t come back at the end of the scene, and there's an added twist. When the people Victor made "heroes" out of come around to Denny's contruction to see Victor, they want to stone him, but Victor repents, the crowd still angry wants to stone him still, but one of them, a security officer, who we see "saving" Victor in a previous scene, stops the mob by shooting his gun. The mob destroys the castle anyway, and when they're all gone, Victor asks the dude why he saved him, and the guy answers that Victor was penitent, so it wouldn't make sense for him to get stoned while being penitent. He then adds "and anyway, you might have pulled one on me the last time I tried to save you, but tonight, I know for sure that I saved your ass."
I LMAO. It would've been a nice ending. Or at least add it before the last scene with Victor and Paige in the aircraft washroom. It's rather illigical that they removed it considering that they did keep the scene that logically would've led to that, with Victor appearing on TV in a previous scene.
Wouldn't it be nice?
This time, the book is SO MUCH BETTER than the movie ( in oposition to Fight Club )

I really was looking forward to this movie, and when finally I saw it.... was a horrible disappointment. I didn´t want a big hollywood production but that is not an excuse, The book has so much material to make an awesome movie and they fucked up, the end is the best of the story and was pass over like it didn´t matter, in stead put a disney fairy tale happy ending.
Have funny things like the "rape" scene but I think the movie in general it´s very low in comparison to the book, and the actress who plays Paige Marshal looks so ordinary, I imagined a really HOT sexy good-looking woman but...
what I love was the song of Radiohead
forgive me for my drafting but I don´t speak english
Choke being one of my all time favorite books, I was very very disappointed with the movie. It only got a limited release so opening weekend I had to drive 2 hours to see it. I knew going in that few books adapt well onscreen, however I enjoyed Fight Club so much that I had high hopes for Choke. I agree that the casting was wrong and the ending was the worst part of the whole movie. The fact that the ending of the book was amazing, and also my favorite part, I left the theater sad and depressed. At least it didn't ruin my love for the book.
honestly, i think ALL the actors did a wonderful job...
They were all nearly perfect for their roles.
My only serious problem was the ending.
That really pissed me off.
He could've at least kept Paige's insane speech. There was no reason for removing that. It would've been hilarious too.
I thought it was kinda bad. I definitely would have liked it, though, had I not read the book.

gastro-intestinal pressure (i'm not sure if that's a required hyphen) and distress do not translate well as a parallel for outside pressure, in a movie.
the ending was fucked, but i watched the deleted rock scenes and thought they didn't do anything involving the rocks justice and it would've been worse had the badly-done stoning scenes been included.
all the funny stuff translated well. i watched the planned rape scenes 5 times in a row and laughed my ass off - those two scenes were so funny there was really no way the rest of it could compare. i just kept rolling it back and laughing. it was worth seeing for that part alone.
and poor kelly. i've loved her since trainspotting, but she wouldn't have been able to pull off the super-crazy confessions even if they'd left them in.
STOP APOLOGIZING AND DEMEAN ME!!! that was perfect. totally worth it.
I remember really liking it when I saw it in theaters (I was incredibly high), but I bought the DVD today and yeah...kind of flat. It's sweet, though. I like Sam Rockwell.
I really consider a movie to be a separate piece of art from the book it' derived from. Blade Runer vs "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" I liked them both, for different reasons. V for Vendetta, the movie vs the graphic novel; gain, I liked them both as separate works.
With Choke, I was happy with the cinematic ending. The book's ending is more thoughtful and ambiguous, but I expected the movie to wrap it all up with a bow and present an ending to the audience that way. I expected that, considering the lighter tone of the movie.
I dig Sam Rockwell, but yes, the movie wasn't as great as I thought it'd be.

Thanks for reporting that, Imke!
I would love to take credit, but I didn't do it! I wasn't sure what to think of it, haha... That's why I posted the weird smilie.
But yay for someone reporting it.
How odd, I could have sworn it was you. But I'm too lazy to go back and check. We were under attack!
I was disappointed, but I thought Sam Rockwell did a fantastic job as Victor. I do think, though, that they should've focused more intensely on his internal conflict and also how the anal beads cause him a lot of pain. It always talks about that in the book but not in the movie. The flashbacks sucked. What was up with Victor's mom all goth and shit? They should've also put in the man and monkey with the chestnuts. But hell, I'm gonna be a filmmaker, maybe I'll just remake it.
~I Am Jack's Colon~
I was really disappointed by the film too. There was a feeling that whoever adapted it just was going from point A to point B without really focusing on how they got there. For example, his whole Jesus thing - one minute he's totally rejected the idea and the next he loves it. For someone watching the film without reading the book, it must be really confusing. It didn't really capture the whole feel/mentality of Victor the way Fight Club did Tyler Durden which is sad, as Choke is such a good book.
