Snuff: The Reaction (Yes, Spoilers, 'lots of 'em)
I think that some of the things i've read on this thread about Snuff are simply a result of Chuck spoiling us. It may not be his finest work, but for people to be saying they want their money back because it was so awful or threatening to contact the publisher -- that's a stretch and a half. I haven't read all of Chuck's novels, but I have been absolutely blown away by those that i've read (my favorite being Invisible Monsters). Snuff didn't disappoint (it definitely lived up to my expectations, i enjoyed it immensely) and certainly wasn't as bad as some individuals are describing it. I would highly recommend Snuff, just maybe not to those who are introductory Chuck readers.
Well, it was better than that DaVinci Code.

See, I would think the exact opposite. Seems like this book would be a good one for someone that has never read anything by him before. If they do end up liking it, then it's pretty much all up hill from there. Each book of his they read after it, they'll think is even better than the last.
Aside from Fight Club because of the movie, Snuff or Rant are probably perfect books to start with him.
While reading the book, frankly I kept waiting for the funny. I was disgusted, sickened and disturbed by it, which may have been the point. Porn is an industry, and just like any other human beings are disposable. Being disposable in an industry that worships exterior beauty, like the movies, is one thing, but porn...
So, I didn't "see" the twists, but then again, I am too interested in reading the story for what it is about. And what it is about, apparently, has not been discussed here...
Porn, as a Male-dominated form of fantasy, is (per feminism) about the possession of the female via the male gaze. Interesting, then, that porn as an industry, and in Snuff (brilliantly) the "stars" are almost always women. (In Snuff, only women have names... a man's name has to be revealed, he is merely numeric, and even after his name is revealed he remains a number. Nothing more. Maybe less.)
Using the most intimate of human acts as an entertainment, the line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred to the point that we need a constant reminder throughout that these are, indeed, Human Beings... but, for the most part, Human Beings are female. Males are numbers.
Granted, I have found less and less about explicit sexually oriented material worthy of attention as I have gone on, so I found the majority of the book to read like something Stephen King or Clive Barker probably wish they had the balls to write... but the ending?
Okay.... the ending: for which the internet term ROTFLMAO was created, created just so that when this novel is read, and you get to the end... you may use it quite rightly.
Real Men don't really give a damn WHAT you think, and Real Gentlemen are too polite to tell you to shut the hell up.
but I think the book is amusing anyway. it's not my favorite Chuck's Book but it catched my attention as usually and couldn't stop reading it.
I don't think it's that dissapointing as some people say here or enough bad to be returned.
I though it was funny at least but also you have to be interesed a bit in the topic of the book if you are not I can understand you hate it. I though it was hilarious at bits and fucked up, it has that grotesque/ nasty thing that you can find in Haunted and a lot of dark humour.
I give it a Okay to be honest..
you will probably LOVE Pygmy.
"Not understand people complain difficult prose. Read perfect crystal as clear to me"
Say, A gem from the past. This made me laugh. A lot.
Yes, I want to play. I really, really do.
If you didn't tell me it was Palahniuk I would have devoured that thing like a fat kid devours a fried Twinkie, but after reading the rest of Palahniuk religiously, it fell a little short for me. Not because of the lack of the Ubermensch, but because there wasn't enough of a possibility of society collapsing now. That said, I liked it a lot. It's just that it wasn't what I expected so it jarred me a little. If I read it again I'd appreciate it much, much more probably.
I lent it to my boyfriend and his reactions were just beautiful. He's not a Chuck fan but he loved it.
And you gotta love the not-son's foster parents' antics, with the dad's sexual Germany models and the mom's penis cakes.

This was the second book I read by him and I really just loved it. I thought the idea was beyond interesting. And I really do love books that tell the same story from different perspectives with new pieces in each telling. I've tried to recommend it to so many of my friends, and they say it is just too boring. All they do is talk. I don't see it that way. I think so much more is going on, but even if that was the case, I really love simplicity. I love that besides the fact they are there to be in a porno, there is no kind of action or huge drama and that it all is in one day.
I'm not very good with reviews of books. All I can say is how much enjoyed it and that everyone should read it. If ever in a conversation I would have plenty to say. But for just a reaction. I loved it. I couldn't wait to get my hand on another one of his books.
Good arms vs bad arms will win hands down.
