I just finished reading the book and am trying to figure out the significance of the spread of rabies. It seems in the beginning that Rant's notoriety comes from being patient zero in the rabies outbreak. By the end of the book, however, the rabies epidemic takes a significant backseat to the time travel that his previous selves have taken. Does the rabies epidemic further the larger plot line in anyway?
