"Rant" - The Limited Edition & Possible Contest!
Hey everyone! I've been in Los Angeles this past week looking for an apartment. And I'm happy to say that I've found the perfect place and will be officially moving there (from NY) on Wednesday I'll be driving cross-country with a friend from San Diego. We're attempting to do it in 4 days so I'll arrive by no later than Sunday. Once there, I'll be setting up The Cult officially on the west coast. This won't affect any of you at all, but it will mean small changes, such as having a new address (to replace the PO Box in Jericho, NY). It will also mean that you'll be seeing me popping in at the Los Angeles readings Chuck does instead of the Manhattan ones. All in all, very exciting stuff. I haven't felt this good in years.

So why don't we talk about everyone's favorite topic: Chuck's next book! Yes, Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey will be released on May 1st. But what you may not know is that RandomHouse will also be releasing a limited edition version of the book (pictured above). This edition will be signed by the author, specially packaged in a slipcase, and will have an exclusive 1200-word "Automotive Afterword" by Chuck that will appear nowhere else.
Standard pre-orders for this limited edition of 'Rant' are already up on Amazon.com. Place your pre-order here!
BUT!!! Our good friends at St. Helen's Book Shop have one-upped Amazon yet again. See, while the book may already be signed, St. Helen's is offering the opportunity to have it personally inscribed by Chuck! They will only be receiving 65 copies, so don't wait a second...
Order your personally inscribed limited edition of 'Rant' from St. Helen's today!!!
Now, who likes contests? I know I do. Especially the ones that the good people at RandomHouse have concocted over the years to celebrate the release of a new Chuck Palahniuk book. This time around, I've been speaking with the lovely Lauren Chinn who works in the Internet Marketing dept. of Doubleday. Lauren has been cool enough to ask me what I'd like to do with the idea of offering a limited edition copy of 'Rant' to someone on our site for free. And of course, that can only mean one word: contest! The first idea to that popped into my head was utilizing all the new video sites that are available online nowadays (YouTube, Break.com, MySpace etc) and have people make their own 1 minute movie shorts based on either a scene or an idea from a Palahniuk novel, or even an attempt at a short story. Hosting a contest like this would fall on The Cult's shoulders, and to be honest, I'm not sure we could handle it. But I can't ignore it's possibilities. So I'd like to hear from all of you on how we could make this happen.
For all of you that have no interest or understanding in how a contest like the above would work out, never fear, nothing is written in stone. Lauren liked the video contest idea, but had some wonderful ideas of her own to contribute, such as having fans send in their Rant Casey testimonials -- Rant Casey... Martyr or Madman? Or for all you designers out there, a tag or logo design that could then be incorporated into the theme of the official website Doubleday will be setting up for the book.
So I am now going to turn this long news post over to you. They don't call this forum a discussion board for nothing, ok? So let's see some feedback from you all on these ideas. I want to see people fine-tuning these ideas... selecting their favorites.... and even offering up their own contest ideas.
For those of you who simply can't wrap your head around all this talk about signed books, video contests and logo designs and just want to hear more about this amazing new book, there's already a review up online.
Read the first online review of 'Rant' here!
I can't vouch for the safety of this review. Meaning, if you want to go into the book blind, you may find some inadvertent spoilers. But I can tell you this: ARCs of 'Rant' have begun floating around, and the word on the streets already is that this is Chuck's best book in long time.
And so, once again, here are the Pre-Order links for 'Rant'.

Yes, they do. Here's the correct link. http://www.amazon.com/Rant-Limited-Biography-Buster-Casey/dp/0385523297/ref=sr_1_1/105-7958744-8271661?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173130840&sr=1-1
$150. Heh, I'll go w/ the regular edition, thanks.
Three cheers for violence.
simply beautiful... but 150 U$S means half of my monthly paycheck!
Like Wayne used to say. "It will be mine oh yeah It will be mine" (someday)
I would love to see the videos anyway, it´s a pretty fun idea
1.5 Bills, ain't gonna do that
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
St. Helen's has my pre-order - they're just lovely.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
Thanks for the heads up on the Limited Ed. 'Rant' link for Amazon. I just corrected the link. Refresh the page and it should work fine now.

Dennis - any idea how many limited edition copies are available?
is there any idea why they picked Rant for Chuck's first limited edition book? I was surprised they didn't do anything like this last year for Fight Club's 10th anniversary, seems like that would have been an easier sell
it's still an outrage that they've got this coming out for 150 bucks but still no Invisible Monsters hardback
Dennis - any idea how many limited edition copies are available?
I recall the number of limited edition copies being somewhere about 1,000. Don't quote me on that though.

Damn, $150? I can't bring myself to spend that much on a book, so standard edition here I come.
I think the video contest sounds really cool. I know I wouldn't be able to participate but I think just seeing what people make for that one would be awesome.
Does it also come with the Chuck action figure with pen of justice? That would be sweet. I'm tired of my Bobafett action figure with a magazine clipping of Chuck's face taped to it.
Joking aside... I can't wait for Rant!
I vote for a video contest... with a strong leaning towards videos made by a female San Franciscan with bangs and a penchant for dirty jokes and would probably love the challenge of making a video...since she makes them quite all too frequently anyway. who's with me?!?!?!

oh man i'll totally kick your butt in that contest!
I think the video contest idea is pretty good, but the logo contest is also good. Although I do feel that if you had to create a logo or something specifically for Rant, it would be hard if you have not read it yet.
But wow, the limited edition book sounds so tempting to just buy! Too bad I don't have $150 to spend on a book
. Heh
Yeah, I as well can't bring myself to put out $150 for a book and goodies. If we love Chuck that much, than we've already written him and gotten treats from him personally. I already pre-ordered the standard inscribed anyways. If I win the the Limited though, I throw my regular to whoever wants it, haha, big if.
About a short video...that would be a better idea if the book was coming out in May of 2008. For those of you who have worked with film, you know that even a minute long vid is a lot of work. It may be more a measure of who has time on their hands as opposed to who is necessarily the most creative.
I don't know if this would work well, but since Chuck writes so many open-ended stories, or at least doesn't bother explaining everything he could in his stories, how about a contest, like, in X-amount of pages, expand upon, or finish one of Chuck stories.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
Shoot. I've already pre-ordered the normal one from Saint Helen's. I would be interested in doing a contest though. I don't really have time or access to the right stuff to make a video or anything. I guess I'll just stick with the normal one from SH's.

Brentinlouis Wrote: What was that rule about being intentionally annoying?
could just do a free for all contest where folks just send in anything, music, video, artwork, sculpture and whatnot
then just pick out which ever moves you the most as the winner
Would it be a contest that ends when the book is released or something that would go on through the summer? with the release of the book would probably fit better but better entries would probably come in with the extra time
the contest should be. "guess wich is the final word on rant!"
The one who guess it first won!
one second tought maybe it`s a stupid idea.
leave it as a last resort

Everyone knows that :headbang:.

Limited edition usually implies first edition.
I'm game for writing testimonials, but would they have to be based on "factual" information from the book, or is it free reign on Rant?
Is there a UK cover?
And as corellion said, nerve endings on white is a much more kick assion look.
Limited edition usually implies first edition.
that doesn't sound right. I mean, I can see a lot of First Editions coming out in Limited Edition , but Limited Edition don't necessarily mean First Edition
I got a limited Edition of From Hell autographed by Moore and Campbell and that didn't come out till long after the original book
I said usually not always. But also, what's more desirable or "collectible"? A first print limited edition, or a limited edition of a re-print?
hell if i know that's the only one i got
I like the idea of a video contest, but I think we should have to play out a scene from one of Chuck's books or stories. We don't have enough Chuck on film, so the more, the better IMHO. Of course, some of us are amateur iMovie-heads, so I would hope the judging is more on the overall product rather than just the production qualities.
One last thought: perhaps the video should simply be an original RANT?
i think a video contest is a great idea, being a part of other video contest in the past the result are always interesting and amazing. but i think it should be from 1 to 10 minutes video.
this is a link for a video contest that's going on that will give you a good idea:
http://www.youtube.com/video_response_view_all?v=dM6elRs7F5k
yes, it's a lot of work. but just to see how different every video and some of them are just great. and Chuck books can bring so many amazing videos.
Someone made a video of Obsolete, and I'm not against them doing it or anything, but if people see a video that isn't quite as good as the book, it would be quite a turn-off to Chuck's work. Fight Club is the exception, not the rule. The intentions of putting his work to film are good, but you can't expect it to match quality. Just because the director has a unique vision doesn't mean that vision reaches the screen.
Here's the link to the Obsolete vid:

"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
either a first edition or a limited can be worth more - depends
i collect stephen king, and a first edition of carrie can go for $300-1200 - there is no limited that i know of
a first edition of insomnia is pretty common, probably worth about $30
a signed limited edition sells for about $300-400
typically, and i can't think of an exception, the first trade edition comes out first, the limited at the same time (but days/weeks later) or much later - ie, years
also, when you say first edition, you mean first world edition - sometimes the UK precedes the US, and in some rare instances other countries, (i'm thinking of maybe the German copy of IT, which was ES).
the biggest difference in a first vs a limited is:
the limited is signed typically
and is bound differently (ie, rare leathers, cloths, etc)
may have extra art or writing
some may sell for pretty cheap originally - i have a signed limited anthology called Borderlands 5 that is signed by about two dozen writers that I bought for $75. The trade was probably about $30. It now sells for $400-500.
since this is chuck's first limited, i would STRONGLY urge any of you fans who are or want to be collector's to find a way to get this.

Film requires that you own hardware and are a filmmaker to some degree. While film is also a passion of mine, as is graphic design, those in a position of authority should recognize that this is a site about writing first and foremost. Perhaps a creative essay on why you should be the winner?
Whatever you do I have some recommendations to insure an even and balanced contest.
"Finalists" be given some forum on the site, those Cult staff judging for finalist inclusion are not allowed to enter.
The final judging be by popular vote and the submission is posted as anonymous until the vote is over. Anyone caught identfying their own work is disqualified. Furthermore those who qualify as finalists should be warned not to discuss the merits of their own work to death in the forum. No popularity contests.
Three cheers for violence.
I think the short-film idea sounds great. I may even have a go at that.
Of course, for those of us living outside the US, $150 purchases (indeed, any purchase over £18/$36) incurs import duty. I don't know how much that works out on $150, but by the time you factor in shipping costs, import duty, and the delivery service's hidden charge for handling product that has to have a surcharge paid on it, it works out to be a whole lotta loot.
I've got my standard version on pre-oder already.
Any idea who's reading it on the Audio CD? You should probably link to that too on Amazon.
Good luck in LA! You got a job there I'm assuming? Don't you know the new LA is Louisiana?!? Tom and Kate in Shreveport, Brad and Angelina bought a mansion in New Orleans, and on and on. Tax cuts for the movie industry are making this place quite popular. New movie studios opening up here too.

I emailed St. Helen's and they said that the edition size was 1,000.
Have a safe and fun drive! If you can, come to downtown San Diego; I work in a bookstore and Chuck's been there before.
short stories made into short videos.. sounds good.
-stephf
yeah the short film contest sounds great. i'm in.
Oh dear, I wouldn't be able to make a short film. I vote for some sort of writing thing.
I'm hinting to all my friends that they should pool their cash and buy me a limited edition for my birthday.
Ironically enough, Palahniuk originally wanted publication solely in paperback because he felt guilty about people paying hardback prices. I’d like his take on the limited edition phenomenon, hysteria, fetish, compulsive disorder, or low cell count.
For once I agree with mad; the focus should be on writing.
What about this? The backdrop of the book focuses on a group, or cult, of people customizing their cars for demolition derbies. Why not pretend we are part of this cult, and submit "rants" on what we intend to accomplish by participating in the races? Perhaps describe how our car is customized, how the competition shapes our interactions with people, and ultimately how we will prevail in the derby.
So it's a competition on a competition.
I like that idea, Dr.

Popular vote is a popularity contest
Woohoo! Just ordered my standard edition autographed copy!
Hey I was just thinking about what chuck had said about where the idea of party crashing came from, at the reading in Kansas city. It had come about from people leaving coffee cups on their cars on accident(as everyone does) and how as they drove people would stare at them, laugh at them, and yell at them, and they had no idea why, but it gave them an excuse to interact with other people they wouldn't normally talk to. And he said some of his friends had picked up on this, and started putting all sorts of things on top of their cars. Some who had old beat up cars even drilled full dining sets to the top of their cars!
So, I had an Idea for the contest, and since a good amount of the book involves the "Party Crashing" with their cars, how about a picture contest or a story contest based on either pictures of what they did to their cars, or stories of how they met someone interesting from doing it, or what happens and reactions they get from it, or what they may notice about how the people in your community or area react to it. Or something along those lines?
I figured this type of contest would keep it with one of the main things in the book, and no one needs to read the book, plus it wouldn't be as difficult, expensive, or time consuming as a video, for people who don't have the means to make one. Plus with the story part, it would keep the focus on the writing, and having a lot of fun!
Any thoughts, Suggestions, or can we build on this idea?

That's actually a swell idea, midwestwhips.
Great idea midwest. Less time consuming then a film, yet it still would show how creative the individual could be. I don't have a car, but that sort of idea could be improvised upon. I could see a similar idea being for people to do a hidden camera thing. We could do something deviant in public to gauge reactions. Not necessarily anything immoral, such as theft/vandalism, etc, but something so totally out of the norm, like crawling on the floor in the mall, and see who gets the most interesting reactions on film, who can build upon what they did, etc.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
That just reminded me of some mall antics one day from 8 years ago when my friends and I were about 16. We went to the mall, bored, and we ended up doing things for reactions from; tackling each other unexpectedly while walking through the mall, panhandling out in front of the mall to see how long it took till security came and to see how many people would throw some change in a hat, to throwing one of us out of a car as it drives by the front entrance of the mall. And throwing someone out of the car while stuck in traffic. The reactions were priceless, we met some interesting people, and we had a lot of fun and laughs. Good memory, thanks!

I don't have any idea on the contest front but damn that black cover with the sun and moon logos is freaking awesome. That is the cover for the limited edition I'm taking it?
Why couldn't they use this for the regular book instead of the bloody hairball picture!
I still can't bring myself to drop 100+ bucks on a new release though
