crashing cars and the enjoyment of it is sort of a universal thing maybe, i know i grew up collecting hot wheels and matchbox cars and wrecking them on highways built in dirt. people watch races hoping hoping for a good wreck, there's nothing like a freeway pile up to stimulate the looky-loos, i'm sort of surprised more books don't address this, every book could use a good car wreck, there's worse plot devices.

Very good point. No matter what, people will end up copying each other to a certain extent based on the sole fact that everything has been said. Even that has been said a million times. I'm sure what i just said now has already been said, which proves my point (as well as the point of every other person who has already made the point.) By no stretch of the imagination is Palahniuk a plagiarizer any more than anyone else is.

Brat. I still take orders from the Col. though, and for longer than anyone else ever had to. Wink

The family was stationed in Munich when I was conceived (however poorly) and moved stateside to Ft Knox where I was born. Big John was an advisor to General Westmoreland in '70-'72 when we lived in Woodbridge.

Y'all getting what you need there? We send boxes over all the time at my day-job.

That's why the quote feature is so important. You meant the guy that started this thread and not meatthinkers post like it looked like to everyone else on planet Earth.

Anyways, I was going to start another thread on this topic so this dumb one doesn't keep getting bumped, on how there's no new ideas and all, but what's important is the different views all of us have on all these same old topics. But didn't see it going any further than everyone saying "yeah, you're right" and therefore being a boring thread.
if anyone thinks of anything more to discuss with that go ahead and make one.

I haven't read crash but was there anything else besides car crashes that made them seem similar? because, you know, there's a helluva lot of vampire books out there and I don't hear anyone saying they're all swinging on Stoker's nuts.

car crash cult? I wouldn't have gone near it, especially since ballard spawned chuckstyle writers.

the interesting thing is that i only ever watched the movie crash, never read the book, but i have to admit i did make that association to crash as i started reading rant.

the idea is different enough, but its alarming that people are making that association period.

still it was a great book. so well written as usual. but like i said on another thread, i wish chuck had just written a straight up novel. but maybe once i read it again i'll feel differently.

I thought Crash was dull and unremarkable. It was a big disappointment. Haven't seen the movie though. And haven't read Rant, either. So I have nothing left to say.

It made me laugh. Histarically? Not so much. But, on the other hand, laughing is something I don't find myself doing often enough anymore. It's not that I don't hear/read/see amusing things throughout my day, it's more that my humor level has been raised in my old age. It takes something a little witty, a little fun, dash of sarcasm. My recipe for hilarity. I sense that we disagree.

Just to note, Rant is the first of Chuck's books I truly enjoyed since Choke. Also, people have been using other people's ideas to fuel their own ideas since who knows when. Just because Rant and Crash both feature people who like to crash their cars for shits and giggles doesn't mean Chuck ripped off Ballard. To be honest, reading Rant felt more like he was ripping off Fight Club than anything else, but the ideas he was striving for in Fight Club he was clarifying in Rant. So really, until you actually read the book, instigator, you don't really have a foot to stand on in this argument.
