First off, I'd like to clarify so i dont get flamed.

YES, this is my first post
YES, i need help for a major essay worth 30% of my overall class grade
(Senior level University preparation course)
YES, i am using this as a method to help understand this novel to a better degree
YES, i have read choke, Invisible monsters, Lullaby, RANT, fight club and survivor.
YES, i have been here before many times, just never signed up.
YES, I have read rant TWICE. im still fucking confused!
Now that that is out of the way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme: Rant depicts Buster Casey's struggle against the alteration of reality through time jumping and personal perceptions that alter who Buster actually is.

All rant ever wanted in life was for things to be real, take for example how he became "the toothfairy" and the incident at the haunted house. Also, how he scrambled the part of his brain in which is used for boosting.

When you think about it, this book is nothing but the same thing looped over and over again. GTS flies back in time, rapes great grandmother, grandmother, then mother. Directly after the brutal rape, a young naked boy runs to Irenes safety. unfortunately, he was too late. this person is known as Chet Casey. Irene has no concepted her soon-to-be child, who is Rant Casey, who is also The young naked boy standing next to her. Chet (or Rant) stays with Irene and lives with her and Chet raises himself where now the Child Rant lives the life according to the book.

The book then ends with the Death of Rant, where he gets sent back in time, and begins what actually happened before the book had began. therefore it is a constant loop, and infinite process of Rant perfecting the timing in order to stop himself from actually being born. here is a question: why does rant want to stop himself from being born. my speculation is that he wanted to stop GTS from what he had been doing, and to make things as they should be. REAL.

Buster Casey's nickname: RANT
the name Rant is derived from the fact that this character rant is actually given to the reader as nothing more than just the conclusions, speculations, and opinions of all of these people ranting about Buster "Rant" Casey. this i believe is just another alteration of reality because you never actually know who Rant is, but it is just filtered through the speculations and opinions of all these people.

So what I am asking of you is:
what are your opinions about the theme and meaning of the book
any supporting information that could help prove my point
any supporting QUOTES that could help prove my points
tell me what you think
anything you think i missed and that you could contribute too.
Thanks alot, If you guys would give me a hand i'd be extremely thankful.

Well I'm not sure if Chuck had explored identity in this book but he sure as hell explored the theme of Immortality as well as Death.

He also tackled the idea of celebrities being turned into Mega-gods through their peers. Best example I could think of was Jesus and the gospels.

Also I think, it was brilliantly said in another thread, about the Rabies thing being the same thing AIDS was. It being a homosexual disease, or being exclusive to those people and those people being the Nighttimers.

Another theme he explored, that he has before, is self-discovery/self-fulfillment and excluding any escapism or distraction. Gettin' bit or gettin' rabies he's "getting ready for reality" while other kids are "escaping it" sniffing glue and such.

Alot of the things that happen in the book are pretty self-explanitory. The idea of technology dictating behavior, how the government is running our lives and such, the father-son theme of how we will turn out like our parents (clever way of putting it).

Yeah dude, alot of this has been said before.... Just need to look for them -- hope i've helped
I thought that the whole rabies epidemic seemed like a metaphor for the AIDS outbreak at first. It was restricted mainly to Nighttimers (homosexuals), so the Daytimers didn't really care except for their own well-being.

Rant Casey seemed more of a martyr than a patient zero. He was the hero that this generation of jaded, destructive kids needed, and he became what they made him. Perhaps he wasn't actually so grand as they remembered him to be. A metaphor for society's he said, she said?

Anyway, my take. I'm interested to see other's impressions.
