Irene and Rant (spoilers)

I haven't read this book in awhile, but I got to thinking about their relationship. Rant obviously cares a great deal for his mother. As I remember it he tries to save his mother from being raped but who was it that raped her? I thought he had to do it to ensure his own survival. Im sorry if this question has already been asked but I didn't get a clear understanding from the other posts. Thanks!
It's been a while, but I remember that it was Charles Casey (Green Taylor Simms) who raped her.
