I didn't like it.
I have read all but Lullaby, Pygmy and Tell-All. Love Chuck but for some reason RANT is just not for me. I admit it presents some interesting imagery and unique concepts but I simply found it unsettling. and not in the the good way like everything else he writes.
Unsettling? I can't see why Rant would unsettle you more than anything else he's written. Its grittiest moments, I thought, were the times Rant stuck his arm in holes out in the desert to get bit by small animals.
I just finished it. It was good, but not among my favorites of his. I didn't find it unsettling, though. When it comes to unsettling, Haunted takes the cake for me. At times I found Rant hard to follow, too. When he first mentions Party Crashing I was, by all means, very confused. So confused, in fact, that I looked up a synopsis of the book to get an idea of what the hell I was reading. By the end, though, it all came together and made sense. Good book, definitely not one of his best.
~There are always greener pastures to be pissed on~
I've tried a few times to sit down and read it. Then i get angry and throw it at my dog. He hates Rant too.
It's one of my favorites. I love the constant time loop and how there are different variations of the character. I can understand how some of it could be hard to follow, but I immediately went back through most of it to clarify some parts.
"We're developing a new citizenry. One that will be very selective about cereals and automobiles, but won't be able to think."
— Rod Serling
"Chuck calls Noah fortnightly on his bakelite rotary phone and gives him publisher's insider information and stock tips."- Tuffy
It is my favorite. It's the reason I started Reading Chuck's stuff, and it's the reason I started reading again period.
My favorite of his newish stuff.
Boosting peaks confused me for a little bit.
Just so we're clear here. You liked Pygmy but hated Rant?
"Tuffy, you're a Dalek, but only because you're only being kept alive by metal, science and hatred." - ScubaSteve1729
I got confused with it, especially the whole Party Crashing thing.
But someone explained it to me, and I got it.
It was good, not my favorite so far though, I think that'd be Choke.
But is it only me, or do Chuck's books say the same thing?
That the only lasting thing you can create are ideas, and such?
You're a brighter little soul than all of the jaded people here. Never take them seriously. NEVER.
I haven't finished it yet but that's because I don't seem to have trouble putting it down like his other books. I'm finding it hard to follow and slightly confusing and as much as I love his other work I'm definitely not a fan of this book.
That the only lasting thing you can create are ideas, and such?
Read Stranger Than Fiction, he answers that in the introduction.
We are, all of us, immortal.
Rant is one of my favorites by Chuck and one of my favorite books in general. I think its brilliant, being able to write an entire novel, completely centered around one character. Granted for me, the ending was a bit confusing when I was reading it, but when someone explained it to me, I thought it was genius.
What if reality is nothing but some disease? -Rant, Buster"Rant" Casey
aren't most novels centered around one character?
I was trying to find a snarky way to say that... *le sigh*

I wasn't trying to make it sound snarky. really it was more of befuddlement. like maybe I've been reading books wrong or something.
No I know. It's just... I wanted to sound snarky. I'm losing my edge.

it´s definetely one of my favourites. I had to read it more than once, ´cause I was wondering, what all that shit does mean...and in the end, uh, it really did.
Did anyone notice that the lovely Echo Lawrence isn´t mentioned in the last few pages and do you have any ideas what that does mean?
I´ll fight like hell to hide that I´ve given up
call me crazy but I Rant is my favorite, and it didnt confuse me.........

Definitely my favorite of Chuck's books. I love everything by Chuck (that I've read so far, that is), but none of them mess with your mind the way Rant does, and I love that. It's the most difficult to follow, but once it hits home it's like an epiphany.
"Music is crucial. Beyond no way can I overstress this fact. Let's say you're southbound on the interstate, cruising alone in the middle lane, listening to AM radio. Up alongside comes a tractor trailer of logs or concrete pipe, a tie-down strap breaks, and the load dumps on top of your little sheetmetal ride. Crushed under a world of concrete, you're sandwiched like so much meat salad between layers of steel and glass. In that last, fast flutter of your eyelids, you looking down that long tunnel toward the bright God Light and your dead grandma walking up to hug you--do you want to be hearing another radio commercial for a mega, clearance, closeout, blow-out liquidation car-stereo sale?"

I agree sort of. I liked Rant, but it was more difficult to follow for me. I'd like to see it in movie-form.
