Echo the gender illusionist
Was anyone else under the impression Echo was a woman until you hit the page about Rant having his way with her? Just from the way she talked, I got this image of Johnny Depp from Fear and Loathing as her character, which was shattered when I learned she was a woman. Was that intentional, did I miss something, am I an ass for assuming, or did Chuck mislead us for mild shock content to keep us on our toes?
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
Don't know why, but echo struck me as a girl from the beginning. Hm...
Not me. I thought she was a dude until the "eating my pussy" part. I think it was Chucks intention to lead us to believe she was male and then drop the "Rant was eating my pussy" bomb on us.
I don't think he was trying to lead us to believe she was a he until then. I mean, there's nothing in there to suggest she's a guy. Chuck just left it vague enough to where the reader fills in their own blanks.

Maybe the leaving it vague is what he did to mislead me. With a name like Echo, and the the other two being men, I guess I just subconsciously assume it's a guy until there is proof otherwise.
Wait till the next book when we find out Echo is black too!

Yeah, we should probably let that dude that was drawing her know.
Echo sounded like a hippie-chick name like Dawn or Sunshine or Hope it so i always thought Echo was a she

Mr. Eko from Lost is still fresh in my brain. That's where I got the "there all guys" from.

argh, I was just gonna say that

I definitely thought Echo was a guy until that point in the book as well. Now that I look back at it, the name Echo should have sounded feminine to me. haha
I thought Echo was female from the off. I also felt she was black for some reason.

I thought a bunch of the characters were black, and that Echo was a guy.
I thought she was a he until otherwise noted.

same happened to me
I was hardcore shocked. It made me do a double take/re-read. On another note, I did a lot of re-reading to figure out Rant's sexuality and I am still extremely confused. How did the guy know the size of the preacher's penis and every other guy's penis in town? Just wondering.
Yeah, I didn't realize Echo was a lady, and yeah, I think Chuck did it on purpose.
I also think he purpously made everything that Shot Dunyan said a question, which was kind of annoying. HE was kind of annoying. I sometimes jst felt like skipping his parts. Eh. I'm complaining again.
*Walks away*

Well when he was lapping his tongue on every woman in town's pussy, he could just taste who they've been with -- how big they were, how they taste and if they got testicular cancer -- But thats just me expanding on Rant's superpowers

Dude, hahahaha. I was fully convinced Echo was a guy, but I pictured some skinny lanky goth boy or something, with black hair and eyeliner, ewww I know right.
I was totally blown away when I found out Echo was a chick, which was part of what made her interesting perhaps? I think Chuck did it on purpose, however.. considering it is an oral history, no every really referred to Echo [at least not very much to my recollection] until Rant his the big city. Perhaps there was just really no point in telling us, since they were just giving their accounts of what had happened..?
