ARC or no ARC?
please help me out...
2 months before Haunted was slated to release i faxed the publishing co. for an advanced reading copy (basically the only perk to working in a bookstore). it came and of course i couldn't keep my dirty mitts off it. i read it instantly. which was great, except that it killed the joy of the laydown date and all that excitement we readers get to build up for our favorite authors.
what to do? i'm sure a lot of you get your hands on galleys. do you read them? save them? stay very far away?
I agree. I have had the pleasure of getting a few advanced copies in the past and have not felt bad about reading them.
Do not speak- unless it improves on silence.
i can't wait for the release date.. i usually get my arcs off of ebay.. how is this that you get an arc from the publishing company??? do you just fax them on 'bookstore' letterhead and say send me one?

that's pretty much it. i check the "books in print" website for the most up-to-date email address and phone # for the publisher. then call or email. sometimes they ask for faxed letterhead. there is no charge for them and they usually send me 2 copies, one for myself and one for my staff. sometimes they send promo stuff too.
are you a bookseller? if not, you may still be able to get one from a publisher... you could fax them as a fan who's interested in reviewing it for an article, etc.
Am I to understand you're bitching about having the drop on the rest of us?
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.

nope. i'm sure there are many people here who have access to galleys. if the book was a huge secret they wouldn't release them (for example, you won't find an arc of any of the harry potter novels except the first one).
i'm asking if you read it in advance or if you appreciate the official laydown and anticipation enough to wait.
I'd kill myself if they had advanced copies of Harry Potter.

they did for the sorcerer's stone (when no one cared). it's worth bank now.
Did you ever get one? What's so speacial about it? Of course they'd never do them now, they have hard enough time shipping them and keeping all the store owners from peeking.

no. but i could use the couple of grand it's worth right about now.
i had a co-worker who has one. there's nothing special about them. they are usually filled with typos (they are un-corrected proofs, as they say) and they are paperbacks. usually the back of the book is covered with promo info. such as where the author will be touring and how much money the publishing house is shelling into promoting the book. kind of weird.
Hum, cool. Ya, too bad you didn't get one.

As a UK bookshop worker Ive got proofs of Diary and Haunted which is slipcased and I love
A lot of Publishers now aren't sending out proofs because of the amount that get sold online so Im not holding out much hope for a Rant proof will reach my little store
i spoke to the publicity department the other day. she had just received the galleys for rant. they are on their way out to booksellers as we speak!
give doubleday a call or fax and they should send one over to you.

Looks like some people are already selling them.
that's so sad to me that someone would sell something that explicitly says "not for sale." those people selling them for possibly hundreds of dollars got them for free.
I just wish they'd post a chapter or something. I find his writing hit or miss with me - hated Lullaby, Choke and absolutely loved Fight club and survivor. Loved the writing of Haunted, but found the stories a little lacking.
Now, what I know about Rant is awesome (kind of like combining Crash with Fight Club), so it all depends on how he approaches it.

Finished mine Saturday...already want to read it again

I would never wait until the release date. That is the beauty of having an advanced copy. I love seeing movies before they premier too.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
are you talking about someone getting an ARC then waiting till the book is released to read it?
I assumed that was the original question. I could be wrong.
I figure if you get an opportunity to get anything before it is released to the general public, you should count yourself as lucky and indulge.

Paul, if your ARC came from somewhere near Metro Detroit, it is quite possible that I HAVE HELD YOUR ARC IN MY OWN TWO HANDS!
I've just got a feeling, man. I've just got a feeling.
Will be looking forward to hearing yr thoughts when yr done
.
Will,
When I read that I had a feeling too, I ran and checked the box it came in, and I hate to say that neither of us have any form of ESP.
It came from Boise Idaho.
Would have been cool though.
I'm 76 pages into it now and still loving it! That oral biography style is really different, and I like it. Wasn't quite sure how well it would work at first, but I really like it. It doesn't take away from the "story" aspect. Plus a neat little tidbit, after each persons name ther is a sun or moon symbol. I thought that was a nice touch.
On another note, seeing your post reminded me of how Chuck used your name in Diary, and I thought you might get a kick out of this. In his response letter, he opened with, "Dear Paul, Thank you for the names of the S&M festivals! I need good fake names for porn movies, for the 2008 book, "Snuff." And I can use those."
I look forward to that book, and to see what names he actually uses, and how he uses them.
I'll let you know more about Rant when I finish it. Not sure how much more I'll be able to read today, I'm swamped with work.

Paul, how did you find one? It's the whips, ain't it?
Paul!
I thought - maybe I was wrong - but I could have swore that you were the top-bidder on an ARC auction that was listed as originating in Detroit, Michigan. And it was just too convenient. Because the girl at the Wayne State bookstore who had the ARC that I nearly stole listened as I told her about how folks are paying top dollar for them on Ebay.
And THEN, like a day or two after, I see an ARC up for auction from Detroit, Michigan.
It seemed like too much of a coincidence.
But, tell you what: if you want to send me your ARC, so that I can, in fact, touch it with my own hands, and then send it back to you...
That would be fine
. Awesome news about Chuck using your S&M festival names in his next book - congrats, man
. That's friggin awesome.
