Holy shit what happened to James?
Holy shit what happened to James?
He was assaulted through no fault of his own, on a simple scouting mission to find a hotel. He bumped into some drunken or drug addled jerk and the guy started to get obnoxious about it. Minuet told this dude to just get in his car and go, but instead, he started punching the good doctor two or three times. Then he fled before the police could arrive. It's already been mentioned in one of the other meetup threads, so I'm not letting any cats out of any bags. I just got the best picture the next morning.
I've played with the timeline to make the few photos I got more connected and entertaining. It was actually late, dark and dreary when all of this happened. And all of the muscle was back at the campsite. james was scouting with two or three of the girls. Bad strategy on our part.

In INDIANA?! You must be lying.
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.

I apologized for not being able to kill the guy.

Sorry man, I didn't know exactly who was along for that ride. When word came back, I just paced around with AP, Karb, and Daley, going "goddamnit, we fucked up."

No, I agree. Too bad someone hadn't been there to pummel the fucker. It was mentioned on a post Robert made earlier. I felt fucking horrible, man. It was the type thing that happened and no one was expecting anything like that to go down and the guy flew out the doors of the motel, and Ethan was talking to Minuet and I was sitting on a bench by the motel entrance looking through motel coupon books with Sheri, and Jen was inside checking on the rooms. The guy had been tossed out of the bar in the motel and came out and brushed past Ethan and said something to him and Ethan said to Minuet somethng like "That guy's mad..." and the guy turned around and walked back toward him and started to scream at him and hit him three times quick and then ran to his car. Minuet was the only one that reacted quick, though it happened so quickly I didn't catch what was going on. Seconds. Minuet caught the guy's tag number, and the cops came and we all had to have a nice chat and explain why a bunch of Internet peoples were in Indiana--"We're uh... here for a writer's conference," Ethan told the 35-or-so yr old cop. "Ever read any Chuck Palahniuk?" Response (NO SHIT, QUOTE): "No, I'm a cop, I don't read..." and that was that. But yeah, I felt bad. I even had a weapon, scrawny as I am. Never registered, too quick. I did hear that they arrested the guy and Ethan ID'd him in a line-up yesterday (Monday) though. Least that's cool.
And Ethan was SO goddam cool about it.
Yeah, he was. And things like that do tend to happen too quickly to stop it. Lesson: Never make any sort of comment about an angry, drunken stranger who is busting out past you from some hotel bar. Just let him go.
I'm a thin guy, but years of training in martial arts, plus I used to have a job taking care of mentally retarded adults of ALL sizes. I had to take special training in applying multiple legal restraining holds to keep the residents from ever hurting staff or each other. If I had been standing within the same quick pacing distance of Ethan as this guy was when he turned back around, I could have stopped him AND held his ass on the ground till the cops got there. But if I had been sitting on a bench looking at the discount coupons, it would have been exactly the same scenario as it was with you there.
If any of our more aggressive and larger guys had been there and close by, it would have been a revenge hit on that motherfucker before he could get in his car and speed away, then we would've had to make bail for somebody.

I'd do this same thing in college when I was bored. Just do it in front of someone's door and knock on the door, then wait for them to open and have a puzzled look for a second, until they look up and get freaked out. Good times.

very funny captions.
look how amazing moon is at climbing. i can't do that, I'd be too scared. What if i fell.
laz looks comfy. not a slave to fashion. I like that.
I have confirmation that Jane S. is extremely cute.
madde you are so happy and pretty! sara too!
Dr. J, that's a rough break. maybe he shoulda punched minuet instead?
where's liz? and frank? hmmmmmm.
I looks like that photo of alex cassun is right before he was about to give you the finger. you know, for old time's sake. Oh well, maybe next year.
Those captions are great, VP, as are the photos.
Moonie is too flippin' cool, and Laz makes me laugh. In every photo, Jane also either has a sweet little smile or some kind of mischievious look.

Dude it was more like,” Nah man, I’m a cop. We’re illiterate.”
And yes, what would I do without me Mini (Minuet)? She was quicker than a centipede on crack. She chased the car as it sped away getting those numbers on the car's ass that tell us things. I think THE MAN was bitter about his receding hairline, so I can’t say I wouldn’t have reacted the same. He probably thought I was pointing at his bald spot.
Cool thing is I got a chipped tooth. The cult 2005 meet up will always come to mind when licking mustard off my teeth..
Anyhow, I’m in Ohio with Minuet and she takes good care of me
. Have a bunch of stories to tell and pictures to put up. But that will have to wait until I’m back at the Laboratory.
Ralph I got your book so PM your Address. Also, When would it be a good time to visit?
Jkabol, Minuet and I want to visit you, so let me know when we can come to bug the shit out of you.

I think he also wins for the most hair.
though Dr/Mr hair is like cotton candy but not sticky.
There was a moment where Laz and Ubik collided or something and fell on each other, and everyone decreed that it was because their combined hair was too much for one world to handle.
I suck at telling that story.
There is hope, but not for us.
I think chris jumped up and wrapped his legs around laz and then laz fell over with ubik on top of hime. that was a great moment.
Laz was so hairy. He had to be hot. I bet he's part yeti.

Thanks for bumping me all you cute people.
Yeah, there were cameras around. Alex Cassun started a pictures thread . There's a big group photo with nearly all of us in that thread. Karen Novak's husband snapped it for us. I think everyvbody who made the meetup was present for it, since that was on Saturday.
Oh, and Fuzzbusta started a meetup pictures thread too.
Edit: I'm not seeing Sara Faye in the big group shot. She had to leave early on Saturday. Many, if not all of the photos she's in from this thread, Like this one... are actually goodbye shots for Sara, rather than concern for the doctor's errant and not yet activated scouting mission.

Yeah, I scoured around and found some other meetup photos. Thanks for documenting Maddie's radiance, by the way, she's scary-photogenic.
Wish I could have been there. Maybe next year.
Or maybe I can talk my wife into inviting an unruly mob of Culties to my house. I don't have much room for people to pitch tents, but it'd be fun to see you guys frighten the natives here.
Oh, and Gardner has Sunday liquor sales now. For some reason the gas stations still don't sell the 'ceral malt beverages' on Sundays, but you can get everything from Pabst to Wild Turkey from 10:30 to 4:30 on Sundays. We have a couple of airports too, but they're the short-hop and hobby type, we're on the opposite end of the KC metro from the 'real' airport.
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
how coul I have missed this, VP you rock....though you seem to have totally left me out of the picture taking. but its glorious anyway
Sorry about that Rachel. It was a pleasure to meet you and I didn't mean to slight you on the picture reel. It happens that I got no pictures of R.K.Daley, Mr. Hash or Cindy Weston either. Hopefully some of the other picture threads make up for that.
As I mentioned somewhere in another thread, really idiosyncratic things caught my attention and made me go get my camera from the car. As an example, Moonie's wall climbing gave me the buzz to start taking pictures at the hotel. It happened minutes after Daley left to go back to the campsite. So, he's not in 'em. Instead, you get indoor shots of Karbuncle, EQ, Maddie, Ubik Rex and the Amazing Moon, who all happened to be lounge lizarding with me. Oh, and the good doctor and his shiner.
My outdoor shots all derive from equally idiosyncratic moments of inspiration. The loss in this: I didn't get pictures of everybody, but there's no personal slight intended. The benefit: I wasn't removing myself from the moment or making people feel self-conscious all the time. Some people who I did manage to shoot, like Cassun, have no recollection of me ever holding a camera. So I count that a success in my vagrant photojournalism. And really, I'm more natural with a guitar or a microphone in my hand. Smile and I'll shoot you next time.
