Texas Cult Meet UP! - Out Past Bedtime.
Rkdaley - Austin
UbikRex - San Antonio
BitOfAFinger - Austin
Wenknee - Galveston
Texas Fan. - Houston
(All times estimated)
5pm We meet at Mojo’s in Austin. Mojo’s is a coffeehouse right next to UT.
BitOfAFinger (Kareem) and I meet first. I had my laptop on with the Cult open on the screen. He saw it and said “Hey, I know that web site.”
Texas Fan (Who was wearing a Cult T-shirt) joined us next, followed by UbikRex about a half hour later. Wenknee was still on her way.
It was cool sitting there with so many cultists. We talked about Chuck and the site. How we came about being on the site and all that.
I have a few pictures. I’m lame and didn’t take as many as I did in the meet up between UbikRex and I, but there are a few and I’ll post them later today.
I got to compliment Kareem in person for all the kick ass work he did and continues to do on the site, so that was cool.
We had a coffee and talked then moved on the drinking establishment.
7:30pm Dog and Duck Pub. This is a cool pub and there was some food ordered and some pints brought. I did not drink nearly as much as I did the other week ago with UbikRex, but I did okay.
We threw some darts and Texas Fan went to meet up with some old friends he hadn’t seen in a long time. So now that he’s gone I can talk about him.
Texas Fan has grown himself to be very tall. Why he needs to be that tall I do not know, maybe he has a lot of stuff on the top shelves in his house or something, but he’s like 2 feet taller than me. He’s a super nice guy and once I got to know him a little I really enjoyed his company. Texas Fan drove over 3 hours in the rain to meet up with us. (as did Wenknee. That’s cool!
Speaking of Wenknee, she arrived after driving several hours in the rain and being detoured off her original route, she arrived. She’s super nice and super cute. Drank Guinness as UbikRex was. I was drinking Belhaven Scottish Ale and Kareem was New Castle, which Texas Fan drank before he left.
Right after Wenknee arrived I had to run some food and drink to my girlfriend. So what happen while I was gone, I do not know.
11:pm We headed for the Red Eyed Fly when I returned. There was a PsychoBilly Band (rock-a-billy + punk rock) playing called, The Flametrick Subs. There very cool and I have wanted to see them for a long time.
We hung there and then that was nice. I had a Lone Star beer and looked at all the girls ( I mean watched the band) We left there at 2 am and Kareem left us. Now that he’s gone I can talk about him.
Kareem is a funny motherfucker. He also has the same hair as UbikRex. I got to tell him thanks as I said and I got to give some pointers and advice on how to make the web site work better (I’m Kidding, I know nothing about how it all works). I did give him input on some changes that I think would be cool.
Kareem is someone I would like to hang out with again, he is interesting and funny and a nice guy. And ladies, he‘s pretty easy on the eyes too.
2am The remaining three of us headed south from the Red Eyed Fly to Magnolia Café. A 24-hour place whose sign reads “Sorry We’re Open” We had some more food and conversation. At this point, its hours past my bedtime and I was barely hanging on.
3am From there UbikRex headed home to San Antonio, an hour and a half drive. Now that he’s gone I can talk about him.
This was my second time meeting him. Totally cool, very funny, great stories. Welcome in my home at anytime. This guy can keep a conversation going, sometimes without the aid of others. I was really happy to see him and feel like I have made a friend.
4 am Wenknee crashed at my house and left around 9 am. That probably got her home around 1pm, but that’s her story and I am sure she’ll tell it. She meet my Rabbit, Enin and let the cat in at 5am when it was outside mewing to be let in. She is welcome anytime, I hate letting the cat in.
Wenknee is cool as well. Sort of wish someone was a jack ass but no one was, oh wait, maybe it was me…uhhh nevermind.
Wenknee must have all the stuff in her house on the bottom shelves, because she hasn’t had to grow very tall, unlike Texas Fan. Oh, Texas Fan and Wenknee did not meet. He left before she came. (reminds me of a few dates I’ve had). She is fun and sweet and easy on the eyes.
It was a success, there are a few Texas folks that didn’t make it, but there will be a round two, I’m sure of it.
Okay everyone, post your versions and impressions.
I will add details and pictures.

this is really damn long...I guess I'm feeling wordy today --
Ok then – here’s my take on the evening:
I dropped my kids off at about 5:30 at my parents’ house – later than I had planned, but my dad works at a golf course (got the job after he retired from his real job so that he can play golf for free or get reduced green fees anywhere in Texas) and didn’t get off work until 5...
I had printed out directions off of MapQuest, but the exit that I was supposed to take was closed – construction…leave it to Houston to block off the way I need to go. So right there, I have to decide – do I just turn around and go home, or do I call and ask if anyone knows any other way to get there? Hell if I was going to turn around when I had a night off from being a mom, so I called rkdaley and he helped me out with that…so then, about an hour later, I’m finally out of Houston and feel like I’m on my way. (Houston’s really damn big)
And then the sun starts to go down. It starts to rain and I’m driving 80 mph, but driving in the rain doesn’t really bother me – it’s driving in traffic in the rain that bothers me and I pretty much had an open road with only a few cars in my way.
And then I hit what is known here in Texas as ‘the hill country’… Where I live (near Galveston) there are no hills. We have overpasses, yes, but there’s a difference and it scared the hell out of me because…I was going 80 mph and the roads were very curvy and I was separated from ongoing traffic by 2 little yellow lines painted down the center of the highway…and then I got that damn Dukes of Hazard theme song in my head.
My sister, who used to live in Austin, called me when I was driving and sounded a bit jealous that I didn’t invite her, so next time, she’s coming with me…And then my younger son’s soccer coach called to let me know that the first game was the next day… nice notice…
And then, I’m finally in Austin and I have no idea where I’m supposed to go, so I call up rkdaley again and he talked to me til I got where they were. Very nice guy and very good at giving directions – once I remembered my left from my right…
So I got there. Rkdaley was waiting outside and we went in – it was a great pub – I kept looking up at the ceiling because it was really neat. I must’ve looked like I had never been out in public before, but I was feeling a little shell-shocked from the weather and the drive in general. It took me about 15 mins (and ½ a pint of Guinness) to realize that I wasn’t still driving and that I wasn’t at home yelling at my 2 kids to stop getting into the dryer…
I just have to say that they were all so nice – I didn’t know what to expect – I’ve never driven 3 hours to meet people that I didn’t know beforehand, but I was quite impressed with everyone –very nice, fun people to hang out with.
When rkdaley went to take his girlfriend the hamburger, we talked more about the site, and other stuff that I’m a bit hazy on right now…I know y’all were talking about G.I. Joes and other toys that you had as kids.
The band that we saw was very cool – and I liked the bar (mainly because you could smoke inside – not used to not being able to do that, we can still do that down south…but also because it reminded me of a place I used to go see bands when I lived in New Orleans). I’m used to sitting down in front of a computer at 1 in the morning, so I went and sat outside with UbikRex…nothing like sitting in on a wet chair when it’s cold outside! We talked about the stuff that we’ve written in the Stanza Society and the site in general and then BitOfAFinger and Rkdaley joined us – and then we realized that we could’ve gone to sit in the front of the bar, where it was warm and the chairs were dry…so we went up there for a while.
Then we went to the restaurant (my sister told me later that I made a terrible mistake by not getting the gingerbread pancakes… but we had queso and chips and that was good). We talked more about Chuck and the site and I showed them the beads that Chuck sent me in December (I wear them around my ankle).
The biggest thing to get over was that they’re all real people – not just imaginary friends that I talk to or see online!
BitOfAFinger and I discussed about how much time we spend on the Cult while we are at work…in fact, I’m at work right now…not working…but he spends WAY more time than I do – he’s a great guy – and I owe you 2 drinks – I’m sorry about that – I didn’t even think about it until I was on my way back home…and no, the Lone Star wasn’t bad at all! and no, the Lone Star wasn’t bad at all!
UbikRex was really neat to meet in person too – he brought me a graphic novel that he had said he would let me borrow when we were talking about comic books one time – and I forgot to bring him the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I promised to bring, but I’ll bring one next time (I didn’t remember til I was on my way home yesterday). But next time you should get some sleep instead of driving back home to San Antonio at 3 AM!
Rkdaley is just a great guy – he let me sleep at his house – for which I will be eternally grateful because I probably would’ve gotten lost looking for a hotel and ended up sleeping in my car somewhere or driving home. His house is totally cool! I didn’t even dig through the cabinets in the bathroom – I think it was because I was so damn tired that I couldn’t move at that point!
The bunny is awesome – I got to see his basketball/girlfriend and it’s the friendliest bunny I’ve ever met! I hope you got the trampoline together ok on Sunday! The cat is no big deal – usually at 5 am I am dealing with a little fellow that wakes up in the middle of the night with wet jammies….
And I want to thank you for not taking too many pictures…and I’m afraid of the one that you took at 3 AM! (I willed you to leave the camera in the car for most of the night)
Texas Fan was gone when I got there, so I didn’t get to meet him, but he lives in Houston, and I live ½ way between Houston and Galveston and I think there’s at least one other person that lives around here somewhere – so if y’all want to meet, let me know.
Thank you, again, rkdaley (and thank your girlfriend as well) for letting me crash on your couch! He drew me a great map before I left at 9 and ended up getting home at about noon – just enough time to start on my laundry, go to the grocery store, and go to a little league soccer game….
If you ever get down here – any of you – and need a place to stay, you can stay at my house.
I’m looking forward to meeting up again!
And I don’t have all of the stuff on the bottom shelves…I’m just good at climbing on the counters in my kitchen to reach the top shelves.
Wheres the damn pictures!?!?!?
Hahaha! Sounds like you guys had a helluva lot of fun! Wish we had enough people out here in the eastern area to do what you guys had so much fun doing! Wow!
That was so much fun to read, both RkD and Wenkee. Waiting on Ubikrex, BitOfAFinger and Texas Fan`s accounts of the moment, should they decide.
So very, very cool. Im glad to hear that another such event was successful!!

That was one uber cool story. I reek of jealousy and impotence at the fact im a bazillion miles away from anyone.
<---- Was There....
I'm heading to school, but I'll get back and place my take on the evening. See everyone later.

No-one wants to go to Hull. It's dystopian. Everyone is covered in sores.
like in 28 days later?
Yes, only when they run at you they're holding a can of Stella Artois.
sweet, sweet story so far...good deal, meeting new friends and all.
can't wait to see some pictures...
(and on a side note, there's no reason why some of us on the east coast can't get together. there are a bunch of new yorkers here, a bunch of nyc people, and a bunch in the northeast in general. i'm down for a good ride in the car to meet some new people and have a good time.)

as much as i wanted to join you guys, i couldn't get the day off of work to drive out to austin. however, after work i went downtown and pub-crawled until 6am or so. it was MADNESS. and i clogged a urinal with yackage...
Okay so the Texans have taken the lead on the meetups. I know we (Chicago Cultists) have been loosely making plans for a meet up this spring. So I say we make something more offical now. It would be grand if we could get the peeps from Indiana, Wisconsin and even Michigan. Someone get on this *coughundertowcough* and make it happen. Anyone wanna take the riegns on this? I would but I have the worst work schedule ever.
Also, very cool meet up story, don't mean to use it as my own pseudo-meetup something or other.

being OCD I've been wanting to get the planning out of the way for the next meet up

Well, Miss Teal, that sounds like splendid idea. Now, if you could only not name call I think we would all be better off. I will have you know that my parents were married when they went all beast-with-two-backs and I was concieved.

i'll drive anywhere...i live for a good road trip.
Okay so Saturday...
Got out of work alittle late, drove to austin having a mini-van tailgate me for half of the way then me winning the battle when he changes lanes. Hit Austin, circle around the block at Mojo's Daily Grind, find parking and walk inside and quickly see Rob with a few of the other guys and I introduce myself and play the quick who is who guessing game. Names are mentioned and I feel slightly bad for forgetting Texas Fan's name, but that is okay because he ended up calling me Rex the entire night which worked out fine. Sat around at the coffeehouse and I noticed some kid that was wearing a Cult t-shirt of Invisible Monsters so I just quickly say "Nice Shirt" as he is walking by, he doesn't hear me but everyone else at the table did, and I didn't laugh outloud but I was laughing to myself because I interrupted the conversation to mention some guys t-shirt which I thought at the end of it was funny. Anyhow I mention that he had a cult t-shirt, but sadly we never talk to the kid. We finish up there once Wenknee calls to mention she is on her way out to Austin and we decide to meet up over at the Dogs and Ducks.
So we all meet up again at Dog and Ducks, Rob is commenting on what he thought was a theft on my parts when he took a look at what I was driving. That sounds wrong, but I didn't want to drive out in the ugly rain, so I borrowed one of my parent's cars. Rob knew this but thought I yoink'd it without asking which I thought was funny. (I asked ofcourse) Walk inside order up a few drinks, sit around talking about various things, and Texas Fan exits for the evening with prior plans with an old buddy. I didn't know much about Texas Fan, but he is a cool guy and differently a taller man than me. Look forward to meeting him again some time in the future again.
So Rob, Kareem, and myself carried on afterwards with more beer and darts. Which I am calling shenanigans on with Rob leaving at the beginning of our recent game to go outside and talk to Wenknee, we both know me closing out and scoring on the 20 on the first round scared you off...heheh. Anyhow, Wenknee aka Jennifer shows up and we all sit down for a bit and after a few more drinks I'm playing tag with the bathroom feeling like I have the bladder of an infant. Some time inbetween our visit there I was talking to some guy waiting along side me to use the bathroom and I mention how when I was at some other place a few weeks back me and a friend had gone to a show where when we got inside there was a line for the toilet forming already and we were practically the first ones there. So I go on to mention that we stand in line for what was 15 minutes and everyone is beginning to bitch about the length of time one man could get stuck in a toilet and so were we and we finally get the man in front of the line to kick open the door and turn at everyone else with a stupid grin and say "Uh..Nobody was in there." Man if any of us had bottles we would have thrown them at him. This absolute stranger laughs at that and the man using the restroom we are waiting for comes out and I say "At least we know someone was in there, don't go kicking down the door." and walk in, do my thing come out, hear about Rob taking food to his lady which was sweet of him if he wasn't haggling for more time out for the evening. heheh.
He missed out on our 80's nostaglia conversation about action figures, and dolls since Jennifer was there, but none contributed to that part. Went out side to have a few cigarettes had a friend call me up while I was outside by myself and with him asking me "Whatcha doing tonight?" I laugh and mention i'm in Austin. He gets upset that I didn't invite him and I tell him about meeting people from the site and he cuts me off by saying " I don't care if you were going to get all buddy buddy with your literary nerds, I would have been drunk before any of that happened." Finish talking to him, go inside we (Kareem, Jennifer and I) continue to talk till Rob gets back, and we sit for a short spell when he does and Kareem informs us of No Pants Day this city created holiday that has turned into a nation wide phemonina. I heard about it vaguely which is sad me being only a hour away. But we talk about that and about how they are having the South and Southwest thing this march. Its this two or three week festival where the first week is all about films and stuff and the following week being about music. So during the music week they have all these live 45 minute shows through out the city and you have to fly from place to place which takes forever due to the large following it has now and catch shows as you go about. And now that I am talking about it, it is looking like more and more that I am going to end up going with a pair of friends with sometime during the music week in march so I'll have to hit you guys up during that.
Me, Rob, Jen circling around a few blocks by the place and ended up finding parking about 5 or 6 blocks away, Rob made it sound very far, but I make a quick remark how it only looks like 4 blocks. I get that bad feeling again and I have to stop everyone whilst I went and peed on the side of a bank. Catch up and we finish our walk to Red Eyed Flye and we meet up with Kareem inside and have ourselves a nice time listening to Rockabila(sp) Punk, but sometime in there I feel like sitting down and so I go outside with Jennifer and we talk about various things, stanza society, writing, her father's gun collection. Rob and Kareem join us and we end up taking it up front where there are warmer seats and I feel dumb for not thinking of doing that earlier. Regardless I had a napkin to wipe my seat out in the rain and laughed later at how I was pigheaded not to offer it to Jennifer who got her ass wet and me barely getting a hint of anything. My bad Jennifer. We leave and Kareem calls a quits for the evening.
This is my second time meeting Kareem but the first time I didn't know who he was over at Chuck P's reading of Diary at Austin back in September. He was giving out these free reader copies of Kiss Me Judas, and what was funny about that was nobody wanted to a copy of them. I ofcourse took one, but it was funny looking at him walk to people who were at a book store for a reading and them not wanting a free fucking book. For a techno compy guy(remember you saying how you felt like one talking web designing hehehe), he sure knows how to have a good time and was very easy going to get along with from the start. We both have the curse of the curls and he ends up with the better look and something of a similiar shirt to what I was wearing. I thought about that when I first arrived.
So, Jennifer, Rob and myself head out to Magnolia's for some grub and a nice chat. Food was good, I ocassionally felt tiny in the table we were in and would fidget about and have the occasionally spill of coffee from my cup pour out. I felt like a dunce in there. At any rate we end up walking outside around 3:30am and I am looking around for my cellphone, I t wasn't in my car nor Jennifers, so I walk inside and go back to our table which already had people in it from the short amount of time that had past, and excused myself with saying "Just checking for a phone and not something else." as I leaned under the table to look for my phone where I set my stuff and find it Thank God, show it to the ladies at that table and smile and make my way out.
Have to say that 2nd time meeting with Rob was just like the first and that man knows how to make people relaxed and comfortable and has a sharp sense of humor that I laugh at frequently. Might have to make a trip out there one weekend to hit the golf course with you, I'm terribly out of play here so I better practice up at the driving range and remove my slice again.
Jennifer, I was meeting for the first time and talk to on a some what regular basis on the cult, great lady, full of interesting stories about her life which I probably could spend a day listening to and not hear them all. Yeah, I remembered the PJ sandwich thing when I drove home pulling into a gas station for gas and to have a smoke. I hope you like the Watchmen graphic novel.
Had a terrific time meeting everyone and definitely look forward to seeing them again in part 2. Okay I think I have run on and on enough here so..this is me leaving

cutest ever.
it's still weird to imagine other cultists have actual faces and stuff.
extremely cute. sorry for the gratuitous use of the word "cute" but, you know. it is.

-NARS.
Ubik, if I remember correctly, your thumb made its debut appearance in at least one of the pictures in the initial Meet Up between you and Rob. Is this some sort of trademark? :D
Yeah, its my signature Cult meet up thing for pictures now.
I will add details and pictures.
where was brock goddamnit?
The gem in in his palm turned red and carousel took him to the next level.
