They do that at all the Double Trees, and I have to agree, they're scrumptious! My neighbor used to manage one out here and he used to hook us up with a tin full of those cookies. We used to also go to the hotel and swim in the pool and have free reign on the conference rooms and suites when they weren't occupied.

It's no bother, really, I used to hate driving in the city but for some reason now I kinda like it, almost as if it were a sport or something. It's a challenge getting to and from the airport but I've done it often enough now that I can manage it no sweat.

Which airport are you coming into, JFK or LaGuardia, and where are you staying? Do you have a cell phone that will work in the U.S.?

Note to other culties flying into NYC for this as well: If you let me know far enough in advance I'll try to arrange to get you as well.

I can already tell that I won't be able to use all my vacation this year (deadlines coming up through December) so I will be rolling some through to next year, I'll just put in now to get that Thursday and Friday off. End of January looks pretty clear right now.

As far as a place to stay goes, supposedly there are inexpensive hostels all over the place but I can't speak from experience. I believe Vigorous Puppy used one before. Mirka came out for that same meet-up as well, I don't know where she stayed though. Ask around, but definitely book early because, as Wickerkat mentioned, there's a big writer's conference that same weekend (Amy Hempel is reading!) and that might eat up lots of hotel space. Stephen Graham Jones mentioned that he might be in town as well. It's all very up-in-the-air right now.

No problem. I don't get to travel to other Cult events so I figure I'd best make this one count since people will be so close. I was already planning on being in the City anyway during this weekend because of this AWP and some people in Write Club are going to be there, so this is just further motivation to visit.

I'm not sure if I'll make it to the Hempel reading. The whole event is huge and while I'd like to see many of the events, I doubt I'd have time for enough of them to make the registration fee worthwhile. If someone has a pass and isn't going to use it for that part, though, I'll probably check it out. Although, why anyone would skip that is beyond me.

I <3 NY and I've lived here my whole life. I actually don't think I could live anywhere else permanently. I could probably spend a couple of years somewhere else - maybe Cali or something, and only if I could still visit NY...but I couldn't be away from the city for too long. It really is the greatest city in the world (fact).

If Manhattan hotels are too expensive, look into hotels in parts of Brooklyn. There is a Marriott in Metrotech (in Brooklyn) that is only a 20 minute train ride from Midtown...which is really nothing, especially if you plan on spending most of your time not-in-your-hotel. And that's just one example...there are other one's not in Manhattan that are still really close.

OK, we HAVE to find a hotel and claim it as the Cult. Maybe we can say we have a big national conference, and they can put us on the hotel sign:
