Ok so it's nothing much, and I feel like a stupid chick posting this, but I wanted to contribute something to this section since I’ve been reading it so much.
I have long hair and I thought that maybe someone writing about a character with long hair would like to know a few things that maybe they didn't know otherwise. I know there are guys out there with long hair as well (Rohan I believe may have longer hair then I do.) so he or some other guy can tell you if anything is different for guys.

My info:
Hair goes past my waist, and is naturally blond.
Never been dyed, permed, bleached, streaked or abused in any other way by chemicals.
I do not use any sort of special brushes or combs.
I do not have or use any sort of hairspray or any other hair product besides shampoo and conditioner.
I do not own a hair dryer or anything like that.

Basic long hair info:
Hair is hot to have in the summer, and good to have in the winter to keep you warm. In the summer it protects your neck, arms and back from getting burnt for awhile. In the winter, it protects those areas from the cold.
Hair gets tangled and it sucks a lot, since it can hurt to brush it out if you leave it for awhile.
People will drop cigarettes in your hair when you're at concerts etc, and if you don’t use hairspray, it won’t burst into flames, so the idiot can simply pick it out of your hair before you punch them out.
When walking by things, hair sometimes gets caught on door handles and other protruding items, yanking it out and making your head hurt. If it’s grabbed enough of it, it will drag your ass to the floor.
When sleeping with another person in the bed, you can wake up and find yourself trapped since they're asleep on your hair. They can also wake up and find themselves choking on your hair.
People will come up to you on the street and tell you that your hair is really long, and they have a 'thing' for long hair.
Braiding is the quickest and easiest way to get hair out of your face, as well as keep it from getting tangled.
People will touch your hair, even if they’re complete strangers. You have to either let them touch it, or jerk away.
Everyone assumes that showers should take you hours, however it only takes about 10 minutes to shampoo and condition it. If you don’t use a hair dryer, it takes hours for it to slowly dry.
It can be used against you. Anyone can easily grab your hair, wrap it around their hand and drag you around. If it’s long enough, you will be unable to reach up and fight back.
Some very strange and scary people have hair fetishes, and you will know this when you see them looking at it/you in ‘that’ way.
If you can’t find a shirt or bra, you simply put your hair over your tits and you’re free to walk in front of uncovered windows to find your shirt without giving the neighborhood kids a free show.
Women who kill other women always cut their victim’s long hair short.
If your hair brushes up against someone’s bare skin, they may think it’s spiders/bugs and slap at it.
When getting a ride home in a co-workers car, you may accidentally get them in trouble with their wife when they find a long piece of hair on the seat. Then, you have to meet the wife to prove that you’re the one with the insanely long hair, and that no, you’re not some hooker with a wig their husband picked up after work.

So yea, now I will go hide in embarrassment over having posted about hair.

What do you do to prevent knots? And you don't use a detangler?

A brilliant post.

If anyone needs tips on maintaining curls/ringlets I'd be happy to advise products wise.
What do you do to prevent knots? And you don't use a detangler?
Well I brush my hair before going to bed and most of the time, braid it back before sleeping as well. That seems to stop most knots, and the rest of the time, I find that brushing it in the morning when I wake, and when I get home after work keeps it from getting out of control. The knots I get in my hair are normally only at the back of my neck. The worst times are in the winter, due to static and the many layers of clothing I must wear to be warm.

Detanglers? I've heard of these things, but when I buy shampoo/conditioner, it's normally right by the perfume section. This makes it so I hold my breath, run for the color of bottles that I use and run away as quick as I can. Those times I've gone elsewhere, there are just too many bottles of stuff on the wall. I don't know what type of hair I've got, I've got hair! If they labeled it "THIS WILL DETANGLE LONG HAIR" then perhaps I would have tried it at some point.

Add to my list that hair can indeed feel good when drunk if it isn’t there already. Mostly when naked, but also when clothed and someone who doesn’t pull on it decides to pull it back and braid it for you.

(And yes, when I go to cut 8 inches or more off, the cancer wig people will be getting it.)

Dude, I have major curly hair. Like out of control curly. Listen to this: I was my hair with Thermasilk curl defining shampoo and conditioner, I put got2be pomade in my hair while it is still wet, I use FX Curls Up hair gel and blow dry my hair with my head down, then I put in Loreal Pumping Curls mousse in my hair and blow dry it some more, then I put more pomade in it, I spray it with Loreal's Pumping Curls spray, blowdry it a little more, and I get soft, big curls, but the problem is frizz. All these products are frizz reducing and I still have a daily, on- going battle with frizz. It's out of control. Especially durin the summer and when it rains, it's a big poof of frizz. So... if pomade isn't the answer (as the hairstylist said it would be)... what is??

Yeah see, when I was in my teens and had long hair 1/2way down my back, it used to tangle all the time. I'd spend hours in the mirror pulling out knots with a comb. I assume I should have used conditioner, as I didn't back then.

In my own case, when I've grown it long (small of my back is the furthest I ever got), the main thing was use a decent shampoo & conditioner, don't blow dry, do brush a few times a day. But I have thick hair with some natural wave to it, no the fine, wispy stuf that people seem to have so much trouble maintaining.

Is there a difference between the high-dollar stuff like Paul Mitchell and so forth? Regretably, in my experience, yeah. So if you're using a really harsh shampoo and not conditioning, especially with fine hair, I could see tangles being inevitable.

To go cheap on the shampoo, find a pal who's taking cosmetology classes. Sometimes they're a good source of free or cheap cuts too (even if you're going for the Crystal Gail thing, you'll need trimming), and if they like you you can get the good stuff at wholesale through them. I've paid as little as $11/quart for PM, and when you consider that it doesn't take a lot (dime to a quarter size spot on your palm depending on how long your hair is and how often you shampoo), it doesn't break the bank.

If that's not cheap enough for you, one of the biggest factors to a good conditioner is acidity, and I think some of the cheapie conditioners use some pretty harsh stuff to lower the pH. You want a low pH for conditioning and to counterbalance the alkalinity of the detergents in the shampoo, but I've heard of people wh make their own conditioner from a formula of 1:4 lemon juice/tap water and sometimes other junk from the fridge. Be sure not to get the lemon juice in your eyes, though.

Took off 14 inches of my hair today. 11 of it goes to LoveLocks.
I feel naked, even though I know it’s not really as short as it feels.

LoveLocks – Their website has info on donating hair, and the minimum they need is 10 inches. Gets put in a plastic bag, then a padded envelope and mailed off.

You are using WAY too many products, meowmittens. Using a blowdryer is such a mistake. Not only does it dry out your hair, but it makes it more frizzy a lot of the time.
I suggest you use an Anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, like L'Oreal Anti -Frizz or Sunsilk for frizz-free Curls and Waves. After that, What I do is brush my hair with a paddle-like flat brush (do not use a comb) whilst it is still wet (and only when it's wet). Do this after you have towel dried your hair. Then, twist your hair, or ring it out a little, so it dries a bit quicker. After that, either spray some frizz free Pantene stuff or something light. Do not use too much mousse, as it makes the hair sticky and hard when it dries.
Then, just leave it. I noticed that hair looks good when you only use a good shampoo and cond. in it - I use the spray if it's hot outside and because I like the smell.

Yes. They needed 10, so I had them cut about 11 or so. Since they do that while it’s in a braided ponytail, it leaves the hair uneven on my head. The rest of the inches are lost from them evening it out.

So anyone planning on doing this with their hair, make sure you're aware that you'll lose more than the 10 inches needed to donate.

I had long hair, but I couldn't get a job with it next to a fast-food/indentured servant job; so I cut it, and here 10 months later and many job interviews since, I still work in a shit-hole fast-food job. What a great economy we have, huh? Oh, but in the plus column, I found a medium length cut that works really well for me.

There are hair nets if necessary, but long hair won't keep you from most jobs if you can develop a skill. There are lots of guys with pony tails (and with shaven heads) who make high five figure/low six figure salaries. But the company has to be able to justify the salary, and your hair length is not a factor if you don't deal with the public.

The railroads, shipping, heavy labor, and many other lines of work will offer you a decent wage and not give a shit about your hair. They will require you to learn skills. A skilled electrician with 3 feet of hair will do better than a clean cut GED with no training.

There are even trades like roofing that are unlikely to cause drug tests if you have a test for pot. But your hair is a diary: we know that Coleridge was honest about his opium and Lord Byron was dishonest about his sobriety based on testing hair for narcotic traces that, especially with Byron, covered years of periodic use he denied.

Though if Byron had been far-sighted enough to think of his hair, his finger nails would probably give the junky away...

What I'm getting at is this: it doesn't matter what the 'economy' does or doesn't do. It doesn't even matter what cultural expectations are set before you. All that matters is your own adaptability, a measure of your smartness as much as anything. there are people who got rich during the Depression, people who went broke in the late 90's boom, people who have bullshitted their way through relative prosperity in both extremes without merit. And a lot of people at all extremes of environment who have just done the bare minimum, mostly rewarded appropriately.

I'm growing my hair right now because I can, I don't have a job that contraindicates it, it hasn't started to thin or gray on me, and I can air condition my way out of discomfort. If any of those things change, I have the razor.

Is there something I can spray on my hair to keep grasshoppers away? I have some big trees and tall grasses near my house and when I leave the house and get to class and sit down there is a girl behind me who always finds grasshoppers in my hair (not every time but like two or three times) and also those neon green inch worms. Is there a repellent or somesuch thing I can spray that will keep them away but won't make my hair look wet or greasy? Thanks!

I used to have crazy long hair. I worked in a hospital at the time. I was disillusioned with the whole 'cult of the well groomed girl' thing I was obsessed with in school. I never brushed it, just washed and conditioned it every night and put it in two messy plaits during the day. Consequently it got all split, looked like crap and I had to cut it to shoulder length. I now to trim and brush regularly and have lovely hair. It's always perfectly straight and shiny.

Poor guy, he never got his grasshopper question answered while he was around.

I'll vouch for Decoy's comment about long hair blocking the sun. During the summer I didn't use sunscreen on my neck since my hair blocked out the sun and now I have to remind myself to use it on my neck since it's shorter again. I didn't feel hot from having long hair on my face though.

How long does your hair have to be to donate it? Mine's getting pretty long again and I've been thinking about it too. Also I've heard that people are always grateful when blonde hair is donated because it's more rare.

You need a ten inch drop. Don't bleach it. I guess perms and dyes are okay, but I thought they wanted it 'natural,' so you might ask your salon before you pay them to wreck your locks as far as donations go. Check out the Locks of Love site. I've got about four inches beyond what it takes to tie everything, bangs & all back, so I think by next April or so (when it starts to get warm again), I'll be able to donate and subsequently shave my scalp. Ten inches braided or pony-tailed. Most salons can help you with it, they'd just as soon band it and send it than sweep it up. If the salon doesn't know what the hell you're talking about, I guess you have to decide whether to find another or educate the one you go to.

I'm blonde, I didn't know that was an assett. I think I may have some gray, and they seperate that out, but with hair my color it's hard to tell gray from the lighter strands.

I also wanted to donate bone marrow. The child of some friends needs a transplant, and while I'm probably not a match, they have a database they keep so I could save someone. Except, I had a heart attack, and they won't take you with a history of heart disease. My cardiologist says that for marrow donation I'm as healthy as any 36 year old, but I guess the rule is a rule. They won't take my blood at the bloodmobile anymore either. It's good blood, the blood is not what caused my heart attack. The blood quit flowing, that cause my heart attack. The stent keeps it going, and the dope I'm on keeps the likelihood of future blockage lower.

I've never dyed my hair before, I'm a natural honey blonde. I have no idea how long my hair is in inches; it goes down to about the bottom of my ribcage. I haven't been to a salon in a loooooong time; a bad haircut in early high school has scared me off them for about the last 4 years or so. But if I decided to donate I'd probably go to have it professionally cut so I don't end up with a retarded resulting haircut.

Blonde hair is more valuable, I'm told, for hair donations because so many girls are dyed or bleach blond, which of course is hard on hair; real blonde hair, especially shades like platinum, are not only attractive, but can be dyed any color.

11 inches, but beware, they braid it, cut it off and then have to even out the rest of your hair! You lose a few more inches to that, and then when your hair dries, it looks even shorter.

I had no idea the blond was wanted more than others, I guess they were happy to get mine too then as I haven't dyed it or anything like that. In fact my hair is almost back to where it was and I need a haircut but I don't know if I want 14 inches off again.

It sure was weird to see that much of my hair hacked off and jammed into an envelope, even all braided and everything. A lady working there at the time had no hair due to fighting off cancer so she was particularly pleased to see someone doing this and knew all about it. If you go somewhere and they don't know about it, make sure you tell them so they can tell others if they come in and have lots of hair cut off.

Scalp conditions?
The only issues I have are when I have my hair pulled back for too long I get a headache due to it pulling and the weight on it.

Damn I need a haircut.

It's easier to get dandruffy with long hair than with a shaved head, if that's what you mean. Neutrogena makes a pretty good dandruff shampoo that I use a couple times a week, does the trick. When I shave, well, shaving is pretty much a daily exfoliant for the scalp. I don't think any length of hair facilitates that the way going slick does.

I have really thick hair, so it traps heat like a motherfucker. Tying it back helps with the neck to an extent, but my hope is to have a donatable length by the time it warms up next year. Then, it all comes off. I'll let them harvest what they want for wigs, and then it's Mach III time.

Before and after pictures please.

Which, by the way, I promise to provide when I get there. We measured my pony tail today and it's about 7" from the collar down. Should be able to make the April target. The difference in my appearance with long hair/beard and shorn scalp/goatee, I end up having to carry expired DLs that show me the opposite of whatever I'm sporting, the difference is huge.

I should probably keep that shit off the internet. If I ever had to go on the lam, I could radically change my apparance with such little effort.

But then, people who actually know me tend to blow Coke out of their noses when I talk about going on the lam.

When growing your hair out, how often should you get it trimmed so the hair's growing at a decent rate?

I get it trimmed when it starts to look uneven, but hair grows from the follicle, as far as I know, and doesn't know whether the ends are snipped. Still, it grows at an uneven pace, so if you don't trim it, and you're going for long, you endup with a really scraggly look.

everyone's hair grows at a different rate, mine grows about an inch a month so if I'm getting a trim lets say every three months then I wont have them cut off more then say half an inch in the interest of evening out my hair. This is all dependant on personal rate of growth.
of course one must also remember that hair is always falling out and new hair begins growing in its place, so as your hair is longer and strands are older they will fall out and your rate of growth will decrease. (my hair didn't ever get past my waist).

I miss being able to twirl my hair behind my back. Sad

That's a good point about the fallout rate. Plus there's breakage.

Also, split ends make the hair look frizzy but don't actually slow the growth. Since I never blow dry, I seldom have any split ends to trim.

my hair is the longest its been in... since i was in first grade... now im 20
its wavy/curly and at maybe mid back- maybe a little above
my question is:
if you have frizzy hair (like mine) <-clicky
what do you use to keep it un frizzed... without making it all greasy?
ive been trying to straighten it, but it bugs out on me

I say let it be a little wild if that's the way it wants to grow. The Garnier girls have appeal because they're different, not because incredibly long, thick, straight hair is the norm. I envy guys who have that stiff, straight beard hair, but I never let my crinkly beard stop me from growing it out.

In enjoyed the post Decoy Robot.... I'm trying to grow my hair out... curly... so it takes awhile. Or at least awhile until it's noticeable. I want to be able to cover my titties like Decoy and walk around with the blinds open half naked.... But, i've never had it as long as Decoy or even Chixulub. Why? Why grow it and keep it that length? Besides the being naked part.... Long hair isn't socially accepted, really, you know? I had a friend in high school that kept her hair so long... to her ass but it was all thin and damaged and just horrible looking. It looks good on you Decoy... but doesn't it weigh your head down? Like dunking your head in the bathtub and raising it back up, swimming... it must be like a ton of bricks...

I can't answer for Decoy, but more people freak out about my beard than about my hair. Some people have a particular reaction to, for instance, putting it in a pony-tail since I'm a guy. I'm not sure what they think it 'means,' though in my case it's a comfort thing in summer, to keep the hair off my neck a bit. Or out of my face when I'm working on something.

I didn't ponty tail it for a long time, and a pissy coworker was saying I smelled bad, bitching to my boss that he shouldn't have to sure a cubicle with a guy so repellant. He even recruited others to claim they noticed a smell.

I'm not the Anal Retentive Chef, but I'm not a slob. This is far from the first vendetta this asshole has launched against me and others in the office, all of which just end up making him look bad. The main reason I'm still his cell-mate is I'm the first person who's been seated by him who doesn't get into fights with him. I just don't engage. But growing my hair, I'm sure, is something for him to fix on and bitch about. The complaints went away when I started wearing the pony tail in the office. Go figure.

But even Frau Lobster thinks my beard is too much and I haven't even begun to think about cutting it back.

This pic is a little out of date, it's longer now.

As far as I know I can't donate my beard, but it just feels natural to grow it long while I'm growing out the locks.

I've heard of people getting headaches from the weight of their hair, but we're talking Crystal Gayle locks, not just waist-length.

I use a loreal profeesional produst called lis extreme, I get it at zano's salon. I'm not sure where esle you can get it from. but its really good for keeping my hair smooth and frizz free without being greasy or heavy. I also use a smoothing shampoo and condition to keep it nice and soft and to prevent frizzies, my hair has a natural wave so some strands would be really curly and osme really straight this helped even that out. to get a good wave in my hair I would simply let it dry in a clip and then take it down a wala I had nice sleek wavy hair.

edit: oh and thanks for the eyes compliment.

I know what your talkin about sista!
except I have not found a way to manage my hair, I just call it schizophrenic (meaning of two minds) cause it cant friggin figure out if it wants to be straight or frizzy.

btw, I would like to grow my hair long (right now it is mid boob-length) and I wonder if it is impossible for some poeple? can everyone have hair down to their butt or is there a genetic predetermined natural length?

there is some element of genetics to it, because of the fall out reate or hair, if you generally just trim your hair every few months (not more then an inch) it might take a while to grow longer then it already is because of the fallout. most natural hair growth lines are around waist or lower back so I wouldn't expect it to grow much longer then that.

There is a predetermined natural length, as Liz said. Up until I was in junior high, I kept my hair down to about my hips. It wouldn't grow any further than that though, no matter the amount of trimming or what have you. My father said his hair would never grow past his ears, and one of my classmates' mother's hair was down to her knees. All depends on hair genetics, I guess.
