Who knows stuff about horse racing/betting? Anyone?
I'm working on a book right now and one of my plot points deals with horse racing.
I need any and all insight of any form that anyone here may have about this stuff.
I'm heading to Canterbury Park this weekend or next (before the season ends!) to get a taste of the experience, but I need to research this heavily.
So far a couple of the scenes will happen at a track, but I also need to learn some of the lingo.
I will probably end up just bringing a notepad with me this weekend as it is, but any information or ideas on where to get information would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!!
Tony

Nice, that oughta help out a lot.
Though I may want to take the CP approach to this, too, and visit a couple support groups for addicted gamblers... that's the info I need.

I hate to be a broken record about Bukowski, but he talked about betting the horses in almost everything he ever wrote. I would pick up some of his stuff and read it to get a realistic feel, like the lingo and whatnot. I don't know if your story is about a hardcore gambler (not a degenerate but someone who tries to make a science out of it), but you should skim trough it at least.

Hey, thanks! That would be great...
One character is hardcore into gambling, but the main character is a more casual gambler with "an edge" if you will.
Bukowski is now on my "to read" list.

I wish I could remember some particular titles, but he goes into great detail about his method of placing bets and gambling in some of it. He's also quite an enjoyable read in my opinion.
If you want to talk to a few guys (Dakota Partners) that thought it would be cool to own a horse and stable it (Dakota Slew) at Canterbury, then accidentally win a horse in a claiming race (Ice Ballet) and the costs and problems associated with it all.....and drunken trainers that overwork the talent......I'll give ya dad's phone number....but he probably still doesn't want to talk about it...

This is my first post over here.
I liked this forum entry the most though, the way you said it was just amazing!
See you Later
Cheers.

There is an author called Dick Francis that bases his books on Horse racing. If you are finding it difficult to get his books let me know and I can pick up some here in Ireland. I dont mind helping out a writer.
Wow... this is weird, cause after NaNoWriMo I was totally going to begin revising and editing the novel this thread refers to. (cancer put it on hold this spring.)
Thanks for the reminder!
