i thought a few years ago we had a couple of members who were into jewelry. i dont know if that is the case or simply if i am hopeful that is. memory can be so derivative.

anyrate. last december my woman and i went to a mall and walked by a crazy looking jewelry sale and decided that most jewelry sales are the same but that we should check it out. (i proposed january first of that year and we knew sooner or later that we would need rings. we had the itch, or whatever.) so we found some rings and the deals were too good to pass up. she wore her engagement ring and i bought a stainless steel ring that i liked. hers was a half carat solitaire on 14k white gold. (i went back and bought the wedding band [as "we" decided that with the solitaire she wouldnt need a band] a few days later and didnt tell her about it til i showed her mom [in front of her] several months later.) anyrate, we get married and the ring is no longer in the drawer but is on my finger. it feels really good, good quality. a few days ago i found that there's a trademark in very small letters on the inside. "benchmark" 14k.

i am reasonably certain that it is a 14k white gold comfort fit, size 10 and it's 8mm wide. and benchmark is a trusted name as they warranty for life.

i'm thinking it's worth more than the one-fifty i spent on it and they had the ring in the wrong case or something. it really was a crazy sale and rings were scattered throughout the display case, and i bet the saleswomen made more money in that one week than believable. (they probably refused to take lunches.)

anywhom, have any idea ?

I don't know about "benchmark", but if you got an 8mm for that price I'd say you got one hell of a deal! That's not stainless steel if it's stamped with 14K, so I think you're right...it's probably white gold. Unless you think it might be platinum, and in that case, CHA-CHING because those are really pricey.

And congratulations on being married. Smile

oh, and platinum weighs a lot less--i'm reasonably certain--and this one has weight to it. it's really taking a while to get used to it, being that i never wear rings or watches or necklaces or whatnot.

I hope for the sanctity of your marriage, that you're only asking this question because want to know how much you're gonna have to shell out again when you lose it.

OR, are you asking this question because you are going to hawk your wring....

no, just banter. many of the people ive met here ive been friends with for years. and getting married is the oddest thing for me, having been against it forever. i just think it's funny that i purchased a stainless steel ring for a hundred and fifty bucks and it turned out to be a 14k white gold "comfort fit" band. i didnt know for more than a year, because it has been kept in the top drawer of my dresser.

thanks, levi. it occurred to me that i should get all three rings appraised. i didnt know this fact until i was snooping for more than an hour with google late into the night, but we bought our wedding rings from the devil. friedman's jewelers was going out of business and that's how we procured such a crazy deal. apparently, that company had hurt a lot of people. i googled for their phone number and found out they were pushed into chapter seven by several different states, and even read testimonies by former employees about how shady the company was. needless to say, they no longer have any working numbers/businesses. serves them right.

and, jay,

yeah. pepper and i were just going over that the other day. it is strange, but that [in this case] is a good thing.

it's worth an apprasial depending on your home insurance. Some items need to be specified if they're over a certain amount in the UK at least.

How interesting. You should definitely have it appraised.

I've always wondered what my ring is worth as well, my guy bought it at a pawn shop back in 1999 for $90, it was just supposed to be for me to wear until he could buy me a "nice" "real" ring but I've always loved it so much I've never let him.

It's sort of funky and oldish, shaped like a rose with little leaves on each side and the petals surrounding a diamond that is probably only about 0.10 carat. I've never seen another like it, even similar ones in jewelry shops are much more precise and perfect looking. I only wonder because it looks very antique, either that or hand made by a very novice jeweler. I wouldn't be surprised either way, to find out it is old and full of value or not at all and he actually paid about exactly what it is worth.

jen's uncle is rich, made his millions in real estate, but he came from dirt poor. literally dirt floors and an outhouse as a child. so their first ring was purchased from a pawnshop. as he said, Hey, diamonds are forever. haha now the bedpreads in her house are worth more than jen's 01 saturn. she has emeralds, diamonds, rubies, oh my. but she would never replace her wedding ring.

guess the idea of an appraisal slipped my thinking. that's what im going to do. ive just never had one done before. haha i've never had jewelry.

This is making me wonder what I should do with my wedding rings. I still have them, but of course I don't wear them. I don't have any daughters to hand them down to, and I don't think I'd want to give them to either of my boys to give to some girl. I dunno. They're really pretty/nice.

Nieces maybe? Or one of your sisters? I could see where that might cause some jealousy though.

Maybe I'll just have them made into something else. Since it was a "failed" marriage, maybe it'd be bad karma anyway.

or craigslist

i spent some serious time searching one out via craigslist. people separate all the time, what else would they do with their investments, is what i thought. never say one i liked, though.

Something is only worth what you can get someone to give you for it. Send it to one of those Fast Cash 4 Gold places and they'll tell you.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, ha!), I don't have it posted. But you're already one step ahead of me in that it seems like you married the RIGHT person. I got married too young for the wrong reasons and to a man who was about ten years older than me. Seems like you guys took a long time to be able to think about it, and that's not exactly what I did.

My best advice would be to ALWAYS listen to your wife, even if you don't like what she's saying. Don't ever be dismissive, or treat her like a commodity. Smile

definitely not. that's why i wrote the vows the way i did.

a few days before the big day, we sat down and hooked eyes and asked each other if this is real, forever? and again just before we walked. she'd been in a few abusive relationships and had so many dark, dark days. she'd given up on the institution of marriage, and i never cared for it. and here we are progressing in our thirties and found something that seems so hard to find. with her, i will never been dismissive.
