Has anyone heard of it, or experienced it? Part of me just wants to pick up and go, but the other part of me is weary to whether it would be the right thing. Who's to say what the right thing to do in any situation would be, really? What qualifies something to be right?

It's a place. Dave Eggers started it to help people progress in their writing. Places can be experienced, right?

Yeah, one of the requirements to go there is to draw a pirate, I'm assuming it's a mascott type deal.

I don't have much time to talk now, since it's Thanksgiving, but I will go into more detail later...basically, there isn't a whole lot to experience really. It's a non-profit meant (I believe) to help kids become good writers, and there are a number of them throughout the country - the original being the one in San Fran. It is funded, at least in part, by the pirate shop that fronts the place. There isn't a ton of stuff for sale, but it's still pretty cool. They have books (stuff you probably haven't heard of) and some other random stuff (eye patches, fake pirate money, etc). It's mostly just cool to say you've been there if you're a Dave Eggers fan, like I am. There is also a fish theater...I won't explain what it is...it's funny more than anything, and you'll see what it is if you go.

That said, 826 Valencia alone is not enough to go all the way out to San Fran...we were in the place for about half an hour, and I think that was a long time. Buuuut, there is tons to do in San Fran and it is a really great city, so I do recommend going there.
