Summer School

So, in the story I'm working on I have kid failing all of his spring term classes at the end of his freshman year in high school. My question is, what happens next? I've tentatively put him in summer school, but I know nothing about summer school. Anyone with experience? How is it structured in terms of hours, weeks, classes, etc? What are other alternatives?

The alternative is Alternative School. Or it was for me. Small classroom, twenty or so students, a few teachers. They hand you all of your work and tell you to get it done by the end of the semester. There was a kitchen in back, and you were allowed to make yourself something to eat on break. Some of the kids were actually living on the streets and would live off of what they ate at school.

Uhh summer school for me was gettin picked up by the bus in the morning, then heading to class for a few hours. It followed with lunch, the remainder of class, and I was off home after that for three weeks for a semester of credits.

The first thing they would do is try and get him to go for 3-ish hours after school every day in the fall first, to make up the classes. Summer school is like a last ditch thing. If he's a freshman they may not even do that, since every high school has it built in for you to be able to fail like 5-6 classes if you take max classes.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
