First you need a business plan and investment or start up money. You also will need a business license at some point and a place to rent to run you business out of.
What kind of business is this going to be?

Send a PM to Bigshrimpn, he'll give you a few pointers.

this is good advice. he does run one. does he not?
also, HAVE YOUR SHIT TOGETHER. It always helps. if you don't have your shit together, don't be getting all pie in the sky small business fantasy.

i'm looking to possibly start something next year - what are you trying to do? you will for sure need a business plan, to get investors or to approach a bank about a small business loan - that's where you'll start
are you profit or non-profit?

Look on the web for government websites. I know that the federal government gives people grants and loans and such to start up small businesses. Also you have a really good business idea. From what I've read here I assume you haven't taken any college business classes? If not you might want to look into it. You don't need go for a degree to just take a few classes. At least that is how it is at my college. Depending on your credit and how much you need for start up costs, try looking into loans from the bank. I also have a friend who has his own skateboarding shop and all of his startup money came from credit cards.
Also, since you are going to be selling things you make yourself, maybe you could just start out selling stuff out of your house. You know, just to build up some capitol to start you "real" business with and you would also get tons of word of mouth advertising this way and some built in clients/customers when you open the actual store. Another advantage of this the is that you would start off with less debt than you would by just going out and getting a loan straight away. I understand that this method would take a bit longer, but I just wanted to put it out there as an option. You will need to weight the pros and cons of every option you have and go with the one that is right for you.
Good luck! I would love to buy a guitar from you. Oh, that gives me another idea. You could start out using the internet as well. Use eBay and all that to your advantage.
