Opinions Editor

Ok I am in journalism in my high school and I was dubbed the role of opinions editor for the school newspaper. I researched what exactly they do, but I couldn't get a straight answer. So now it is up to you guys to give me a solid answer of an opinions editor. I kind of have the jist of it, but I need to be 100% sure.
This may be a dumb question, but thanks for putting up with me.

Make sure opinions have merit and backing, that both sides of the argument are represented. Consolidate sentences to save space.
