why, you thinking of getting a job as a life insurance agent?

i think they just view various reports (ie, police, etc.) but could be wrong

would it be like a claims adjuster that goes to the scene of a baby choking on a broken pascifier?

maybe claims adjuster, that sounds better

and i think they'd only come out if there was something suspicious, ie insurance agent (or claims adjuster) goes to scene of a house fire that may be arson

try this:

It's something most people wouldn't know, so you could probably invent an insurance investigator, even a private detective who investigates suspicious life insurance claims. It wouldn't be the agent, the agent is sales. I'm not sure it would be an adjustor, though it might be. There must be a mechanism, especially for large claims (someone insured for a million dies at 50 with no apparent cause of death, for instance).

I'd expect the insurance company's first recourse to be government sources: medical examiner rules cause of death as something plausible and sees nothing suspicious, I would expect most insurance to just pay up. But I know a neighbor I used to have was widowed and her husband's death was hard for the coroner to explain, and there was some delay when she filed the claim on the larger of his life policies. I'm not sure what the process was, but I know she eventually got her money (at least if the house she moved to a year later is an indicator). I wasn't insensitive enough to ask for the nitty gritty details.
