Say you've got a great idea for a science fiction story, only you hate science fiction stories and have the barest perception of what all has been done in science fiction stories. Do you go ahead and write out your idea, only to find out later that it's already been written by someone else? Or do you kind of backburner something like that until you can find out somehow if it's been done already or not?

I'm leaning more towards going ahead and writing it out, because you do really got to either shit or get off the pot. But, damn, that's a lot of work down the drain if it turns out you just re-did someone else's story. And there's a ton of science fiction stories out there, surely everything has been covered.

Is this about you specifically or just in general?

Write it. Everything's been done multiple times. We're just telling the same stories over and over again. Your voice is what sells it, so write it now while it's fresh and exciting to you.

Barring that, just condense your idea into a sentence and google it. If your story about Neon and his journey with Quadria and Morphinus into the Matrices seems to pop up a lot, then rethink your story.

Write it, definitely. If it's been done before and you find out, just tweak it enough that it doesn't look like a complete rip-off. I'm pretty sure the mass likes good stories, regardless of whether they've been told before (at least if "before" wasn't less than five years ago).

i agree with monkey and skjer, especially the part about your voice.
writing is also something of a pleasure for you/whoever, i'm assuming.
enjoy yourself.

I think i'm going to write it both ways and see which works best. I think I found a way to do it where the science fiction stuff is pretty much in the background à la Rant.

Does this mean that Nate Parker finally goes down the rabbit hole that is Writers' Workshop, too?

This exact thing happened to me a while ago. I had an idea for a sci fi story but it's not my forte. Then again how will I know unless I give it a try?

I still want to do my Captain America origin story with it turning out that the whole Super-Soldier Serum was all a Nazi plot and the whole sending Captain America into Germany was their plan to get the formula to them but, C'mon! That is way to obvious that it hasn't been done before. there's been 60+ years of Captain America stories. It's just had to have!!
