How to kill yourself on suicide watch
Hi, just to get it out of the way: I'm from sweden, a lot of swedes express themselves really good in english, I'm not one of them but I understand english really well and use that to write in swedish. I hope this is okey. (I, would of course love to be able to write in english, the swedish population is about 9 million and that's it.. including babies....)
Nevertheless, I'm writing a story that I'm really excited about, I've had the idea for about three years and it's finally getting structured, all the essentials are there - so let's jump to my problem.
I have one character, a teenager, that needs to commit suicide in this story, he wants and needs to and it is a fictional suicide that is necessary for the story - it's not "recommending it" in anyway. But, after taking nembutal pills (barbiturates) and drinking a lot of booze, he falls asleep and pukes out most of it, waking up in an ambulance pumping out his stomach (or what it's called). This is kind of a little twist in the story, seeming that suicide would be the easiest thing in the world, and now he's stuck in a suicide-ward.
And here is where I'm stuck with research aswell. In sweden I know that they assign a person to guard the "suicide-patient" 24/7, even when they go to the bathroom etc. And the next day, they consult with the "chief physician" who will decide if they need the guard further etc.
Does anyone know how a consultation like that would sound like? (My character being smart about it but still just wanting to end his life as fast as possible).
Or do anyone have an interesting way that he could manage to kill himself from that environment - it doesn't have to be quick, but preferably interesting and innovative - or just very convincing dialogue with the "chief physician". Of course, it doesn't need to be pertaining to swedish care or regulations, I'd prefer more international - and as long as it sounds legit and has some merit, it will do the story just fine.
Any suggestions, links, references or anything would be very much appreciated!

Thanks for the reply!
The problem is that he's on suicide watch, being monitorered so he won't kill himself - but in my story - he need to die, as soon as possible. However, I don't really see how he can provoke a cop to kill him from that situation though.

Maybe he just rams his skull into the wall?
Saw a dude do that once. Sick.

Depending on how determined he was and how securely they got him shackled, he could just start biting away till he hits a good vein.
Thanks for the replies, I'll take them into consideration.
I might be easier if I found a real case in some article somewhere and then mention that case really early on in my story - so when my character uses the same method it can be more absurd and detailed I guess.
If I find anything, it's been a tough subject to research but my character WILL KILL himself so thanks again for the suggestions.

Water intoxication. Drinking a large dose of water can be fatal.

I really like this idea. Been reading up just a little bit about it and it could actually work really well.
I will probably have him waiting to speak to the "överläkare" (I don't know what it's called in english, but something like "chief physician" I guess).
As he waits he will recall a lot of stories, sitting by the drinking fountain - cutting them with him drinking another cup of water, and another etc. And it could end with a story about the woman who died in a radio contest to win a Nintendo Wii.

That will make the reader of course understand all the water he's been drinking and why he collapses as soon as he is called in.
Or something like that, now I have something to build on at least that could work!! Thanks alot, I really appreciate it!

If he's quick enough after that kind of overdose, he could manage to smash his head in the door... This is very shaky.
He could jam his plastic spork into his neck? He could provoke a hotheaded staff member to kill him in a blind rage... OH! He could lie about a food allergy!
He could eat his own feces while taking advantage of a nurse with their head turned?
I'm putting a lot of thought into this as you can see...
The best one I have come up with is he braks his own finger, making it look like an accident. The change of scenery into a hospital setting (or a different floor of the building) makes it a lot easier for him to quickly hurt himself. It also makes it harder to actually die though.

Thanks for the reply, but I went with the "drinking too much water".
That has actually been the cause of death for quite a few people in psychiatric wards, both successful suicide attempts and also a few schizophrenics that might have died by mistake by drinking too much water because of some symptom of their mental illness.
While I researched this I came across a lot of real deaths from stupid contests, like eating contests, sauna contests etc etc etc. Pretty sad ways to die.
I used some of them too as stories the character had read about, to set up the "water death" as the last one he mentions before he passes out.
I think it worked pretty nice.
But again, thanks for the suggestions!

YOu could have him bite his own tongue off so he bleed out like the paralyzed boxer chick in the movie Million Dollar Baby.

Blue death(suicide by cop) is the first one to come to mind.
