Escaped mental inmates
Watching Scariest Places On Earth on ABC Family....they cover a mental hospital, with a history "too gruesome" to reveal where it is. So of course, I decide it sounds like a good short story, and I must absolutely know where this has taken place. Of course, I can't find it. So I'm recruiting you guys.
IF this place actually exists (it sounds a little far fetched to me), this is what I know...
A patient escapes, dismembering another female patient. He buries her around the hospital grounds, and is never caught. He is believed to still live around the hospital, which closed its doors in 1990 due to its inhumane treatment of patients, apparently still using electroshock treatment, beating patients, etc. A newspaper quoted it's constable, Charles Gravis, as telling the town not to panic, but a very violent and insane criminal had escaped.
If this rings a bell to anyone, or you come up with anything else to add, let me know, because I'm very curious.
Thanks,
Mandi

When I re-watched this episode (I recorded it on DVR), I actually found out it's in New Englands. Which actually really helped.

I think the name of the hospital your looking for is The Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry i saw some pictures and it look exactally the same as the hospital in the show

Two up from me..ScribblingDes I believe...is correct. Those of you not from North America or the New England area...Philly is NOT in New England. However, Mass is so by means of elimination, Metro is the one you are looking for.
I think if you check out this site, you will find your answer.
hey guys...im watching it right now on scifi...the absolute answer your looking for is right down the street from me...it is the norwich insane asylum in norwich, ct... it was once said to be a TB hospital first then turned into the insane asylum. it was also said that because of all the deaths they had that there was no room in the morgue for all the bodies that they started to bury them all over the property. Also, there are many tunnels underground from one side of the property to the other which is located on both sides of the street. They made the tunnels so that the patients were not exposed to the outside world. I have gone fishing behind one of the buildings before and I was fishing well into the night but I had to cut through the property to get to the street because you cant park on the property. Believe me when I say it is the most uncomfortable feeling you could have. It feels like someone is watching but with 100 sets of eyes. You KNOW your not alone there at all. Inside the building you will still find to this day, tools that were used on the patients...scaples, saws, tables with straps...the whole thing...its not a fun place. Yet exciting. So I hope you guys have found your answer. Oh yeah...and if you do choose to go there, they do have security that drives through, but you'll NEVER see them get out of the car..ha ha
My guess would have been Northampton MA. but if it is in CT that's not far from me and I wouldn't mind going there and checking it out. would you be interested in setting me up with some info. going to NoHo today and Belchertown S.H. soon as well.
O.K., This sounded VERY familiar ... How about this --- Essex County Hospital, N.J.
http://www.scifi.com/ghosthunters/episodes/episodes.php?seas=5&ep=0508&a...
Essex County Sanitorium, New Jersey
TAPS bravely investigates the Essex County hospital which has been treating the criminally insane, mentally ill, and depressed since 1895. An estimated 10,000 people have died at the facility over the years as a result of suicide or medical complications. The tortured spirits of the residents allegedly haunt the area. On the first floor of Building 5 people have reportedly seen full-bodied apparitions standing in the hallway and one worker felt someone touch the side of his body. And while doing his rounds, the assistant hospital administrator, Tom Hamilton, had an overwhelming feeling of fatigue when he walked through a particular hallway. The hospital covers more than 365 acres of property and the underground tunnels are used to connect each of the buildings. In the tunnels people have seen flickering blue light. In the morgue voices have been heard and on the second floor of Building 11 people have reportedly seen the figure of a nurse walking down the hall and then disappearing.
Taps arrived on the scene just in time since the buildings will be torn down and turned into a park soon. Jay and Grant kicked off the investigation in the tunnel and while they are researching they hear a series of odd noises, one of which sounds like a cart being wheeled down the hall. But when the hunters find the cart, it doesn't have any wheels on it. They also received some interesting hits on the thermal imaging camera. And then when Jason was doing an interview with the cameraman it sounded like someone was walking past but no one could find the source to the footsteps.
Tango and Steve started their investigation on the second floor of Building 5. There was a moment during the investigation that the two ghost hunters heard what sounded like a snapping sound. They were able to successfully record the sound on the mini DV recorder to confirm what the heard but they didn't find a culprit for the noise. Meanwhile Joe and Britt decided to conduct EVP session in the morgue. And ironically, like the other investigators they too heard unexplained noises in the room they were in.
Determined to find a source for the snapping sound they'd heard earlier, Steve and Tango head back to the second floor of Building 5. Steve decided to use the shotgun microphone since it's a directional mic that will be able to pick up sounds from a variety of directions and lengthy distances. Steve placed the mic on a tray on the floor when they began their EVP session, but later on, when they went to retrieve the mic, they noticed that it had been moved. No one else had been near the mic so this discovery was extremely alarming.
In Building 3, Jason and Grant find a ceramic house that one of the former residents might have made. As soon as they touched the house, they heard a female voice come from the staircase area. Towards the end of the investigation the Ghost Hunters decided to test out a new piece of equipment called The Helmet cam, which allows investigators to go on a hunt by themselves while the others watch what's happening from a monitor that's connected to the live camera feed in the helmet. Britt tested out this new feature in the tunnels close to Building 11 but he wasn't able to come across any substantial evidence.
To round up their research Dave and Steve decide to investigate the morgue. In an effort to provoke the spirits both hunters lie on the slab and close themselves up inside of the freezer. And though they didn't seem to have any immediate paranormal reactions they find out later that they were not alone in the room.
Throughout the hunt at the Essex County Hospital the investigators had similar personal experiences where they heard noises such as voices, footsteps and shuffling sounds in the room they were in. The team was discovered that their digital recorders had picked up voices in certain rooms. Joe and Britt's recorder picked up a voice that sounded like it was saying "children." And while Dave and Steve were boxed in the freezers in the morgue a voice was recorded saying, "he's here". All of the evidence gathered during this investigation lead TAPS to conclude that the Essex County Hospital is haunted.

Smiley, I hate to be argumentative and as a result, "burst your bubble", but while you are technically correct, only as a result of the "Dominion of New England" in 1686, (which originally covered only 6 states) under King James II, even though Pennsylvania was established (but was historically settled in 1631 by the Dutch and in 1638 by Sweden),as a subject of the Crown of England, in 1681, under/by William Penn (as repayment of a debt owed to Penn's father, Admiral Penn), so the land was somewhat in dispute by countries/peoples of different countries/different settlements, and I'm sure that even once the disputes by countries were settled, peoples from the rival countries remained, causing problems, as I know I would stay around where I live even if Canada and the U.S. agreed that Canada was now in ownership of my state. In any case, Pennsylvania can have an institution referred to/named as "New England " and it still be proper, while at the same time being incorrect. Thanks!
Well!
Thank God that's been settled after two arduous years.
its not in pennslyvania or new jersey..its in waltham and they demolished it in 2007 and its called met state. search it up.
Suggesting that people "search it up" in the research forum is unlikely to win you admiration. Nor is calling people "dumbasses", but I see that the mods have already spanked that post.
Please keep the Research forum helpful and respectful.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I was visiting a hospital my grandmother worked at around 87-88, and got to see the before and after of electroshock therapy. It sure was something!
Alright. Well I live about maybe a mile from it and its called Metropolitan State Hospital. It held people that were either crazy or just couldn't be cared for by their parents. This one guy that the first post and raving about, his name was Charles Gravis. He had killed a woman in the hospital there and he had escaped, and he had buried the woman somewhere around the hospital. People say he is still on the loose, because they had never found him, but, some people say he still lurks around the main building due to the town demolishing the buildings in 2007/08. The main building is still there and is said to be "haunted", and inside is aseptics which may affect your health 10-20 years from now...The town has completely shutdown the building but some kids like to wander inside trying to find more stuff out. I have gone to it before...and I don't think it is that scary, but that's my opinion...and when it closed it 1992, the nurses and doctors literally opened the doors because they could not afford paying anymore. A lot of people from the hospital still come back and visit and haunt it. For more info, or pictures ask or heres a link:

This one too...
That's the kind of posts we like in The Research Department!
Is it, now? That's just as bad as having ghost shows invading the Discovery Channel. Remember when Discovery was nothing but actual science? Me neither.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Well she answered the initial question that was asked. So yes, it's exactly the kind of post we encourage.
Writing ain't science.
The mental hospital in question is the Danvers State Hospital that was condemned in 1990 in Danvers Ma
Danvers State Hospital in Danvers MA...my aunt worked there...developer want to build condos...good luck with that
The Hospital was not in Danvers, it was in three New England Towns, Waltham, Belmont, and Lexington Massachusetts ...it was know as Metropolitan State Hospital. This site may help...http://www.metropolitanstatehospital.com
Danvers State Asylum would be my guess was due to property sale they could not give location.. idk probably it
Shock treatment hasn't been inhumane for almost half a century now. It's always with consent of either you or if you are unable to say yes with a full mental ability, then a guardian has to.
They explain the risks and such and even put you under anesthesia for the procedure. It works wonders for people who don't respond to talk therapy or medications. In almost all cases you come out feeling like a completely new person, in a good way.
I've been in mental institutions before and I have to say that escaping one is a mighty big feat of ingenuity.
First off there has to be at least three locked doors, each usually with a different pass card or key, before you can even get to fresh air. You will either need to completely immobilize a worker and take all his keys (Assuming you know which ones are which) without anyone knowing, and they do safety checks every fifteen minutes according to most state laws, or you have that worker sneak you out. This would mean that he or she would lose his or her job because an infraction like that is a prosecutable offense.
Patients who are violent are even more secured than the ones who aren't. We're talking units that max super max jails look tame. They will no doubt also be doped up to the point of not knowing where they are just to control them. Plus you have increased security and staff blocking any real chance of escape.
Even in the new version of Halloween, Mr. Rob Zombie is selling you a load of crap because Michael Myers would of been stopped by one of dozens of locked doors, sealing him in where he killed the police officers transporting him.
My suggestion is to visit a place like that or contact somebody who works there and pick their brains. There could be a way but it's very improbable without help from either the outside or a staff member who is willing to risk their career and imprisonment for the patient, or set the story in the past when security was merely a big bulky orderly and a locked door.
I hope I helped and I'm sorry if I poked holes in any existing story. :-\

Just a hunch, but is this in North America by any chance?
