Criticism of society
I need approaches about criticism of society in any of Chuck Palahniuks books. I'm writing an essay about this issue in school, but I don't really know where to start!
I thought of heading for Invisible Monsters and maybe Choke but I'm not sure if I'm going to find enough to write 4000 words about this subject?!
I wanted to insure myself about that choice before I start rereading the books.
I appreciate other essay-themes too, if anyone wants to help me out with his ideas!
Even little critiques are helpful
The pick of the bunch would be if the criticism is comprehensive over both books!
Thank you in advance for your help!
P.S. I've read Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Choke, Haunted, Snuff, Lullaby and Survivor.
Yeah - I would say Survivor and Fight Club also.
As for filling 400 words... isn't that less than a typed page? You should have no problem.
He said 4,000. Still not really that much. Somewhere around eight pages single spaced.
OH - my bad... what a difference a '0' can make.
Ah... I didn't really figure out the ideas in Survivor, was a bit too difficult for me (English isn't my first language).
But do you think Invisible Monsters could be also an alternative for my assignment?
Of course, it is my paper but I expected a smidgen more help or at least some other opinions about my question
I really would be happy about more responses =D
Thank you !
Can you tell us what ideas you are pulling from Invisible Monsters? There has to be a reason that you keep pulling for that one.
And I really felt Invisible Monsters was a tough read compared to Survivor. That's just me though.
It's been a while since I read it, but isn't IM more of a criticism of our media-happy society? People watching people watch themselves on TV and etc? The relentless quest for 15 minutes o fuseless fame, yada yada yada...
The ideas I was looking for in Invisible Monsters were like that people are products of society and maybe how they ignore other people like derelicts or handicaped... But now I don't know if I should take Survivor or IM!
For Survivor I've really no knowledge, that's the problem because elsewise (if you say "there's a lot criticism") I would directly take it for my paper.
I have to write an explicit outline for tomorrow therefore I have to decide
Thank you again for your answers !
I still would definitely go with either Survivor or Fight Club. But it seems like you made your mind up and you just wanted us to confirm it.
Why not use stuff from all of them? Why are you limiting yourself to just one book?
The problem is, I had to choose books for today, to have something to present to my teacher. I can't choose all books, that would just take too much time... I wanted to limit myself on 2!
If you want to make me change my mind you have to convince me of Survivor
If you're not being limited to one book by your teacher, I'd definitely use two or three for a paper. If you have only one source, your thesis tends to be more specific (since you have less material to use) and that makes it harder to actually back up your thesis. It's definitely still possible, it just makes the paper a bigger pain in the ass.
When you have more material, your thesis can be more broad since you have plenty of sources to quote.
that's been my experience, anyway, as an english major.
This must be a missunderstanding, because I'm going to use 2 books, not only 1 book. Fight Club for sure, but I'm faltering between IM an Survivor...
I am not limited, I can do whatever I want, but only if it is possible... and therefore I have to present my ideas (and questions, sources, ...) to my teacher. The problem is, that my school ends tomorrow (for this year) and then I have about 2 months to write the paper without the support of my english teacher.
I hope you understand my situation now
Yes.
You have two months to do this, so I'd go with Survivor for the 2nd book. You have the time to explore the themes in it, and since you DID come to the CP website for opinions (and we're all pretty well-read when it comes to Chuck), I'd go with what the majority thinks.
There's so much to Survivor you could write about.
Pretty much those same themes you mentioned about IM, you'll find in Survivor. Plus you'll also get into the whole celebrity worship and Creedish/religious cult society.
If you really want to bust some essay writing chops, try using Fugitives and Refugees, his non-fiction tourbook of Portland and explore the different societal levels in there.
I don't want you to think I'm a messy student... I just changed the subject a little late
Okay, but then I have to tell my teacher tomorrow that I'm changing from Invisible Monsters to Survivor !
But I have no idea about it
you said you can do whatever you like with it. Just use all three books. You'll fill up that 4,000 word limit in no time.
^^^ what nate said.
Now wait
That's too much help, I want to keep my issue =D
I take Survivor !
The problem for me is, I'm afraid about too much informations. I don't want to be overrun by chucks brilliance
(AND I READ VERY SLOW)
But maybe...maybe... yes
Just keep a notebook with you as you read through them and write down everything you think you might use with a page number next to it. That way when your done you got everything right there and the page number to go back for context or whatnot. Save ya some time.
Of course! I'm trying to keep all of you up-to-date here if you want to ... so you can be proud of me and my work... because now, you're a part of it, somehow ^^
I'm going to bed, I have to be in good form for my last school day =D
Thank you a lot !
Huhu it's me again
I finished the books and I started writing now. But I changed the theme a little bit, because my teacher said so. Trying to relate criticism of society with nihilism. Don't know if that will work.
What do you think?
Chuck is not a nihilist so that probably won't work out so great.
By Chuck's own words: "What you don't know, you can make mean anything."
Okay, I take just the criticism... already difficult enough for me
I don't want to write about him, but about his books... I don't know, I'm a little confused by all the stuff I've to bring in some order, there is so much in those books... most things i've found in Survivor and Fight Club like you said

I think the most overt criticisms of society are in Fight Club and Survivor. As far as approaches, well, that's your assignment.
