Hello,

I am writing a novel and the main character is a Bio-Hazard cleaning specialist. Meaning when a crime happens, they call his company and he comes to clean it up. Thing is I don't know too much about this subject. I have been doing research on the internet, and I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge on this subject.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

There was an episode of Insomniac with Dave Attel where he went around with just that kind of guy. He had to dispose of all that nastiness. Im pretty sure he just used industrial grade cleaners and lots of garbage bags. There was also a shop vac involved, but that doesnt seem too interesting.

Thanks I'll keep a look out for that episode. I was hoping there would be a lot of interesting technical aspects of the job, but it doesn't look to be so. I have e-mailed a few of these companies asking about the procedures they use, not sure if I will ever get any replies though.

They had to wear funky suits, but really, it was more blood and stuff than technical inside info. Maybe theres more to it, but it didnt seem that way.

It's slightly beyond the scope of this guy's job, but www.coronerstories.com has lots of information on dealing with cleanup of fluids and odors, and is an all-around bitchin' resource about crime scenes and such.

Also, if you're in the mood for some bookreadin', "Dead Men Do Tell Tales : The Strange and Fascinating Cases of a Forensic Anthropologist," by William R. Maples and Michael Browning, is pretty good. IIRC, William Maples spent a warped adolesence and young adulthood working for funeral homes and cleaning up highway accidents before going to school and finally becoming the Florida State Coroner. It's highly readable.

Let us know if you're still looking. I know the owner of a company that does that kind of work. I can get him to answer some questions.

This community fucking rocks. Thanks for all the help. I will go to the library today and pick up that book.

McMuddle, if I wrote out a list of like say 10 questions or something, do you think you could get the answers for me. It'd be really helpful and I'd love you forever.

This is maybe tangential, as it's not a coroner type thing, but read The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. It's a non-fiction book about (in particular) the ebola virus, and deals with USAMRIID. It would give you a lot of insight into how the 'authorities' deal with stuff that needs to be taken seriously.

Oh, and there was this movie, which I remember as being excellent: http://imdb.com/title/tt0101634/

This is weird. I'm working on a piece in which my main character does the same thing. It looks like you are about as far as I am. One thing that I could offer for some insight is an essary from the book I Love You More Than You Know by Jonathan Ames. The title of the essay is "Ron Gospodarski." Ron is a prominent bio-recovery technician and this article actually has some great insight. After reading it I decided that that was what I wanted my main character to do for a living. Anyway, I hope this helps. It's a great essay, but it is kind of short. I'm still looking for more information on this field too.

Hey, I'm new to this whole thing so what's up... That's out of the way.

I used to work for car dealerships in high school and they ordered this cleaning agent they use in hospitals. It's called Spray 9 and it kills various types of HIV. There are a few products as such which you might want to familiarize yourself with.

Another thing is, it's been made illegal to use those 3m paper masks when the substances you come in contact with may be hazardous to your health.

Trivia tidbit: 3m, at one time made bras, but when women started favoring more comfortable support rather than try and adapt their product, 3m decided to throw in the towel. The breast molds fit fairly snug around the face so that's where those stupid masks came from. I only bring it up because I was watching Hot Fuzz today and all the crime scene investigators wore paper masks. They're supposed to wear respirators.
